Mank Reviews
Its obsession with movie history minus tired romanticism makes it strangely enchanting.

Is it his most accessible film to date? No, but who cares? We got a new Fincher movie in 2020 and it was very much a Fincher movie.

Given the vastness of Hollywood itself to fool around in, Fincher is aimless. He needs to hole himself up somewhere and get back to work.

Mank probably spends more time than necessary defining the protagonist's own crisis of conscience within a corrupt and decaying dream factory.

Mank tries hard to be cinematic ambrosia, but, like a beautiful cake with too much frosting, it doesn’t entirely satisfy, even though it looks amazing.

With the perfectionist, dedicated David Fincher at the helm, his late father's screenplay ends up being the filmmaker's most personal project so far. A wonderful homage not only to Citizen Kane but also to the 30s/40s decades.

All in all, this movie has the dramatic punch and heartfelt energy that would easily make this film a classic, and it's not too far off from achieving that goal.

It is a wonderful ode to old Hollywood ode the 30s and early 40s and a tribute to a writer known for controversy and personality rather than his talent.

Mank isn’t about the incredibly tedious question of who wrote Citizen Kane —that’s the hook, but the film’s true interest, to my immense relief, is the incredibly specific story of Upton Sinclair’s failed 1934 California gubernatorial bid.

By knowing the boundaries of fiction and steeping real-life characters within them, Mank lets us see Fincher's love for cinema and how cruel that industry can be to those who love it. [Full review in Spanish]

A wildly entertaining throwback to the Golden Age of Hollywood filmmaking during political unrest, tested loyalties and fear propaganda.
| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Sep 9, 2022
It’s an applause-worthy celebration of the art of cinema - a visual and performance-rich delight.

The biopic of Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz is gloriously old-fashioned in its style but startling in its contemporary relevance.

The phrase The Magic of The Movies is used sarcastically by several characters in the film, but what makes Mank so brilliant is that it finds the magic in the people that make the movies.
| Original Score: 5/5 | Feb 28, 2022
In the case of Mank, the most accurate statement that can be said is that it is one of the best films of the year.
| Original Score: 4/4 | Feb 18, 2022
Fincher's film, both on and off-screen, represents an example of a triumphant artist telling a personal story, and that continues to be a rare thing.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Feb 17, 2022
As it stands, Mank might have to settle for great over legendary.

In many ways it deals with a past that... but also the present. [Full review in Spanish]

Mank is a production that's faithful to its protagonist, but this inevitably puts distance between it and the spectator. [Full review in Spanish]
