Mapplethorpe Reviews
Took me to the era Good to see the past being well represented
Engrossing. 1970s NYC, Patti Smith, the Chelsea.
Not as bad as i thought it would be
Matt Smith is extraordinary in this biopic of the controversial photographer. It is a full on sex, drugs and rock and roll story set against the dizzying background of New York in the 1970s and 1980s and the movie really confronts the nature of Mapplethorpe's work. If you have ever seen his photographs and wondered about the man behind the lens, you need to see this film.
The writer & director cowered at the opportunity a movie about Mapplethorpe gave them. While I commend the filmmakers for not flinching in showing some of Mapplethorpe’s work, this biopic is as bland as I heated chicken broth. How can you make a movie about such an icon and have so little to share about his life, method and motivation.
Saw some of his pictures at the Guggenheim and they were utter garbage. He was a disgusting person taking disgusting photos!
