Marriage Story Reviews
A child victim of the parents vanity
Whilst clearly a very well made movie technically, the main focus is on Scarlett and Adam and their powerhouse performances. Both gives amazing shows whilst all the supporting actors are just as great. I felt the story was ok but seemed to lack the punch until the end. Whilst I'm sure the intention was a slow spiral at watching what divorce can do to families, something just felt, I don't know, a bit empty for the most part. I wouldn't say it's a bad movie, just probably isn't for me
A very sad movie about a harsh reality that a lot of people go through: Divorce. With Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson as leads, it relies on a feel between theater and cinema, which is excellently done as it mirrors both characters and what they want and desire. With clever wordage, monologues, and an interesting plot without much clear action or excitement, it still delivers a heart wrecking and emotional performance of two lovers falling away from each other. The parallelism and the subtleties of every scene, and how the characters react to each other and to others made the film super lively, which meant it hurt all the more with the message they portrayed. A very good film indeed.
Marriage Story - 9/10. Marriage Story is a story that has been done before. But what makes the film different from other divorce films such as Kramer vs Kramer is the use of comedy and creating a lighter visual experience. Don't get it wrong though, Marriage Story is a sad film overall, but it's the comedy that helps alleviate the pain of seeing people fall out of love. Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver do a splendid job of digging into their characters and providing growth throughout the duration of the film. They display a variety of emotions and play their characters in a very grounded nature. Laura Dern is a definite standout as the cocky but well intentioned divorce lawyer for Scarlett's character in the film. Azhy Robertson, who plays the son of the couple, does a great job of playing the child who just can't seem to grasp the magnitude of what his parents are going through. The real star of the movie however is definitely Noah Baumbach. He delivers a story that could have been dreadful to watch, but provides it in such a way that by the time the movie ends, it leaves in a bittersweet mood. A delightfully sad film, go watch it once it's up on Netflix! One of my favourites during the festival!
The story and acting was very realistic, and I got a little in my feels during but at the end I was so emotional and sobbed. Incredible story telling, it felt like my own story was being told.. Beautiful movie.
Excellent acting and a story that navigates the difficulties of family and divorce.
Though it can just feel like 2 hours of a couple arguing, Marriage Story is another good work from Baumbach. It slumps a lot in the middle but it has an amazing opening, and picks up a lot in the last act, enough to save the film. I didn't really like Scarlet Johansson's character but the Adam Driver's character and performance are great.
74%. 8/28/24. Dives into the selfishness of people in relationships. Driver's character is all about his own work as a director but gets jealous of Scarlett's acting career. You really see the end of their marriage through the ugly divorce process and custody battle. The legal scenes are pretty intense. Pretty depressing film. 1/5 rewatch.
Can't say it wasn't good acting but something just felt off. The pieces ( actors, scenery, story) are good on their own but when all mashed together? Not so great.
Should have been called Divorce Story, cause that’s what it’s about. I really hate films about couple’s fighting. For a film that is basically a couple arguing for two hours, it wasn’t terrible, mainly because the performances were so good. Adam Driver was absolutely brilliant. How he didn’t take home the Oscar is beyond me.
Excellently written and directed by Noah Baumbach with equally marvellous performances by Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, Marriage Story is a powerful, emotionally rich and totally genuine exploration of love and marriage that is greatly structured while balancing aspects of turbulence and heart without ever becoming overdramatic. It isn't the easiest watch, but the level of care and humanity makes this is a special film in my opinion that i'm glad i watched.
Might be the sign of a new era and style of filmmaking, it's as good as all those video essays say.
Incredible acting, painfuly honest, sad, intensely real, oh and TODO ERA MENTIRA CUANDO TU ME DECIAS BBY TE EXTRAÑO, QUE DURARIAMOS AÑOS, BBY DOLIO TU ENGAÑO, OJALA QUE SE ACABE ESTE TEMA Y POR FIN YO ME OLVIDE DE TI
Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver star as a married couple riddled with flaws ultimately resulting in a messy divorce told from both perspectives. As we can emphasize with both characters it makes the outcome all the more emotional. The lead performances as well as Dern's and Liotta's are nothing short of amazing and netted Dern an Oscar for Supporting Actress.
I've never sobbed and related to a movie so much. Like I genuinely cried with a passion, I cried like not take a pic and save it to snap type of way. Just emotionally unable to breathe. Must watch movie! Too good
i cried 4 times very good movie
Masterclass on writing, performing, and characters
Love does not entail happiness, especially in marraige! As two parents are going through with their divorce, the hardship of raising their son in two different worlds wears them down as the complications lead to even more conflict between them. Scarlet Johansen and Adam Driver manage to bring up the raw anger boiling beneath the surface of a couple that has lost the love for each other!
The best performance of adam driver and scarlett johansson i've ever seen! Also it has amazing cinematography and it's very relatable for families going through divorce.
