Marvin's Room Reviews
This was such a compelling movie with great acting and storyline. I'd never heard of this one but I'm so glad I watched it. There are some intense scenes and it is a tearjerker. Meryl Streep was superb as usual and I was very impressed with Diane Keaton as well. It's definitely worth the watch.
Amazing. Considering its definitely not funny themes, this movie was not what I'd thought it would feel like. Man, those jokes really worked on me- subtle, but just so clever and hilarious. The humour, like the rest of movie relies on Meryl Streep to work. Her performance was brilliant- sassy, painfully true, and yeah, funny. If I had to use one word to describe Marvin's Room, it would be heartwarming. This movie doesn't fall into the usual tear-jerker cliches. It goes beyond that. The ending was not what I so confidently thought it would be. It provokes questions about all of us and our familial relationships, what they mean about us, and presents the power of sacrifice. What is a life well lived? Is it Lee's fantasy of a degree, a career, lovers, fun. Or is it Bessie's truth of complete sacrifice for those you love? Marvin's Room ends on a note that favours Bessie's version, but I don't know. Who really does know?
Emotional movie about some familly problems featuring young DiCaprio
Enjoyable slice-of-life family drama. Small choices with big consequences in a family with a lot of thorns. Good movie. The ending was a bit flat.
It was a heartfelt story with really good actors and acting, but it too slow with too much doom-and-gloom for me.
My 2022 goal of viewing all movies featuring Meryl Streep continues. This time around the film is Marvin's Room, released in 1996. The story of two sisters who have been estranged for over 20 years. Bessie (Diane Keaton) is single, lives in Florida, and is helping to care for her bedridden father and his aging sister. Lee (Meryl Streep) moved to Ohio, had two children and has worked to be independent with a career in cosmetology. After decades apart, Lee discovers that Bessie has been diagnosed with leukemia (the same disease that took their mother from them) and is in need of a bone marrow transplant. With kids in tow, Bessie heads to Florida and the dysfunction of all the characters is laid bare as they attempt to establish their own sense of family again. The acting is superb. How could it not be? The cast is rounded out with such acting legends as Lionardo DiCaprio as Lee's troublesome son, Robert De Niro as Bessie's unorthodox doctor, Hume Cronyn as the bedridden father, and Gwen Verdon as Aunt Ruth. Diane Keaton was a particular stand-out in this film for me, as she never once employed the cliched "befuddled" technique she often relies on. Keaton was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for this film. The actors are superior to the script, and that helps make the film feel better than it is. While not entirely predictable in its journey, one pretty much knows that the reuniting of family, one way or another, is how things will conclude. The film wraps a beautiful bow on its ending that reminded me very much of Billy Wilder films such as "The Apartment" or "The Lost Weekend" where a tidy ending seems a tad overplayed, and yet the viewer is left wondering... "did it really work out?" and believing that the ending could actually be a wonderful jumping on point for a completely different film. This one was a solid B+ for me.
Diane Keaton, Robert DiNiro, Meryl Streep, and Leonardo DiCaprio Keaton and Streep are Bessie and Lee are sisters yet they have not spoken to each other for 20 years They have too many differing viewpoints and radically opposite personalities Their farther is Marvin who is slowly dying Lee's rebellious teenage son Hank is more trouble than he's worth acting out every now and then Bessie stayed in Florida to watch after their father and Lee moved to Ohio having a family; they reunite but have a long way to go patching things up particularly when Bessie is diagnosed with leukemia Her doctor Wally informs her she needs a bone marrow transplant Sometimes the people you know the least are the ones you need the most The places we've left behind are the places we've always belonged Powerful performances and emotional fireworks help the movie on a human level These two women's chemistry sparkles along with DiCaprio dealing with impossible odds while mending those broken bonds Not without some flaws but fine actors keep things abound
Good Movie. Liked the Dynamic between actors and the story kept your attention enough to just want to know What was to happen. Moments made me laugh and also moments made me cry. a solid Movie. always a Meryl fan!
Great cast and good story. The actors Meryl Streep, Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Dan Heyda, and Margo Martindale have worked with at least one actor from this film in another film. In particular I like Robert De Niros perfomance providing humour and comic relief as a doctor. Another example of showing that De Niro has great range as a actor. Overall a great family drama with great relatable characters and a lot of heart.
i saw it in the 90's first time and had a chance to see it almost 20 yrs later. having lost my dad and having a cancer similar to diane keaton's character has, the film made me cry. i think it is a very mature film and you can only connect with it when you get old and life experience
Without the cast it would be one of a million other films.
Anyone who has, or who has had, a similar family background will love this movie. I saw this when I was 13 and I loved it. Now I am 36, and I love it even more. To anyone of you who finds this movie too cheesy...you have just been lucky. Too bad you cannot empathise with it, but so many people do, so try and not be a cold and mean person. In my opinion this movie is a proper drama, with some great humorous parts, the story is lovely and incredibly relatable, the soundtrack is amazing, the performances are impeccable. The ending scene is one of the best endings I have ever seen, it is extremely touching. In a few words: this movie is a must-see masterpiece from the 90s.
It was well acted and had some great subtle humour, its about dealing with major health issues, morality, mental health, families reconnecting. A good watch.
A movie with big-name actors who performed as expected. However, the dysfunctional family life portrayed topped with fata disease was just too depressing and sad. I wouldn't want to watch it again.
Despite of its predictable narrative, Marvins Room offers to us a compelling movie that is touching, well-acted, interesting and that has a strong script.
Just finished watching and felt like it was a half ending... you don't really get to know Hank's character... also, you don't know whether or not Diane Keaton's character Bessie dies or not! it was an all-star cast in a B-grade movie in my opinion
