McEnroe Reviews
It's a very, very watchable doc.

While the film proves to be a wonderful time capsule for the fashion (and the hair!) of the ’70s and ’80s, there’s not much more to McEnroe.

Still, we get a sense of his perfectionism and how, ultimately, the drive to succeed prevented him from enjoying his career as much as he might and perhaps should have.

…does a good job of recording the full force of a bull in an antiquarian china shop…

A fantastic, tell-all look back at, and celebration of, an indisputable icon.

This captivating new documentary by Barney Douglas shows an entirely different side of McEnroe -- and reveals him to have been a far more sensitive soul than most will have suspected.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Oct 28, 2022
This is a man who has achieved things that few of us could ever imagine accomplishing, yet he did so like a bull in a china shop. Not only has he come to terms with his past actions, but he’s also become a more self-aware person in the process.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Oct 4, 2022
The more traditional documentary norms dealing with career highlights offer more than digging into his competitive soul which just seems content upon the realization that sometimes a-holes are just a-holes.

What is striking is that McEnroe can't look back at his tennis glory days with honor or lightness, because it represents a complexity within that he still deals with today. Along with his Daddy issues, a clearer picture emerges beyond the anger. Serious!

I love this film... Seeing John McEnroe become the guy that he became.

A solid, well-constructed piece of biographical documentary, but ultimately it’s probably not going to change your opinion of the man too much.
| Sep 8, 2022
A fascinating exploration of one of the greatest athletes of all time, a flawed man who has shaken away many of his demons.
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Sep 8, 2022
McEnroe instead plays like a television special recapping one of the greatest tennis pros of the 80s but missing the artistry and boldness that McEnroe himself demonstrated.
| Original Score: 55/100 | Sep 7, 2022
In the autobiographical documentary... we’re reminded of McEnroe’s dominance on the court — as well as the antics that earned him a reputation as a brat who polarized the tennis world.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Sep 3, 2022
Whenever McEnroe stops complaining and simply plays, the archival footage of him darting back and forth on the court, scoring hits that would be out of reach for most mortals, is utterly thrilling.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Sep 2, 2022
The film is shot to match the moodiness of its subject...showcasing McEnroe walking around his old haunts in New York in the dark of night too. Filmmaker Douglas not only gets us inside his subject’s head he gets us in his agitated, prickly skin.
| Original Score: 4/4 | Sep 2, 2022
The sports highlights almost take care of themselves in terms of the highlights of McEnroe’s life, but it’s the more confessional material that is truly compelling and eye-opening in many ways.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Sep 2, 2022
There’s a lot more here for tennis fans than you get in average sports documentaries.

“McEnroe” is alternately compelling and annoying. What makes it compelling is its subject.

This documentary goes beyond the story of a great athlete, this is the story of a "bad boy that became a great man". [Full review in Spanish]
