It's a very, very watchable doc.

This captivating new documentary by Barney Douglas shows an entirely different side of McEnroe -- and reveals him to have been a far more sensitive soul than most will have suspected.

I love this film... Seeing John McEnroe become the guy that he became.

A fascinating exploration of one of the greatest athletes of all time, a flawed man who has shaken away many of his demons.
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Sep 8, 2022
In the autobiographical documentary... we’re reminded of McEnroe’s dominance on the court — as well as the antics that earned him a reputation as a brat who polarized the tennis world.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Sep 3, 2022
Whenever McEnroe stops complaining and simply plays, the archival footage of him darting back and forth on the court, scoring hits that would be out of reach for most mortals, is utterly thrilling.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Sep 2, 2022
There’s a lot more here for tennis fans than you get in average sports documentaries.

“McEnroe” is alternately compelling and annoying. What makes it compelling is its subject.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Sep 1, 2022
“McEnroe” is a compelling reminder of a time when the outspoken McEnroe lived out loud, foibles and all. It was fascinating to watch then. The film is fascinating now.

McEnroe might not be an all-time champ among sports docs, but overall this is a win.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Aug 24, 2022
Barney Douglas’s doc about tennis maverick John McEnroe belongs to that rare handful of portraits that should find an audience far beyond just fans of the game itself.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 16, 2022
… This portrait of John McEnroe is refreshingly free of the sycophancy that drags down so many sports documentaries.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 15, 2022
There’s plenty to mull over, even within a rather conventional and chronological framework, and the film-maker hits an ace with a supporting cast that includes the reclusive Björn Borg and McEnroe’s sometime drinking buddy Keith Richards.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 15, 2022
The talking heads aren’t particularly revealing and there are some strange filmmaking choices. But McEnroe makes for incredibly likeable company and the tennis, as ever, remains sublime.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 15, 2022
A gripping and thorough reinspection of a fascinating case.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 14, 2022
What is missing for tennis nerds is an in-depth study of his technical brilliance... What else is absent here speaks volumes: first wife Tatum O’Neal and nemesis Jimmy Connors, for example.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 13, 2022
The rock’n’roll bad boy of tennis is watchably if uncritically celebrated in this documentary portrait...
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 13, 2022
The best sports doc since Senna.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Jul 1, 2022
Depending on your viewpoint, it's either a testament to a life survived or a poignant retrospective on McEnroe's tarnished greatness: But most of all it's a depiction of a man who still sees himself as a work in progress.
