Meek's Cutoff Reviews

Jan 8, 2025

Don't waste your time on this slow moving movie. The ending was terrible!

Dec 8, 2024

I thInk the poor audience reviews were from people who were unfamiliar with the historical event. I had heard of this Donner party type ordeal, and except of trapped in the snow, they were trapped in the desert...and of course, no cannibalism...One of the lesser known facts about the Donner Party.? At least a couple of the survivors got down to the gold fields and opened restaurants?!..kinda creepy

What a pretentious, boring POS. Sat through it waiting for the payoff at the end, and OMG zilch. No resolution. Note to myself: Never, ever sit through another movie by Kelly Reichardt.

Without question one of the top 5 worst movies I have ever watched. Horrible. Tedious. Without any redeeming qualities. Like it was made by a 9th grade theater arts class.

I SAT THROUGH THE SLOWEST MOVING SCRIPT, INAUDIBLE DIALOGUE EVEN WITH CLOSED CAPTION WHICH WORKED SPORADICALLY. I TOLD MYSELF, OKAY THIS IS A VERY DIFFERENT WESTERN, BUT WE, THE AUDIENCE, WILL PROBABLY GET A 'COSMIC' ENDING. BUT NO!!!! IT ENDS WITHOUT ANY REAL CONCLUSION. REMINDS ME OF MY COLLEGE DAYS WHEN I WOULD FAWN OVER ANY FOREIGN FILM. WHAT DID I KNOW?

The acting was well done but there is no ending at all. Its like the movie just stops short of any type of ending.

I watched all of it but I have to say quite boring. I have trouble recommending this one but hey try it if you like James Welch, Henderson, Arkansas June 14, 2023.

A small group of settlers travelling across the Oregon High Desert in 1845 suspect that their guide, Stephen Meek, may not know the area well enough to plot a safe and certain route. A journey that was supposed to take two weeks, via what became known as the Meek Cutoff, stretches into five. With no clear sense of where they are going, tensions rise as water and food run low. The wives look on, unable to participate in the decision making, as their husbands discuss how long they should continue to follow Meek. The dynamics of power shift when they capture a lone native and hold him in the hope he will lead them to a source of water, despite Meek's wish to kill him at once. Meek argues that the native cannot be trusted, but the group by now have no confidence in Meek... Rotten Tomatoes consensus was, "Moving at a contemplative speed unseen in most westerns, Meek's Cutoff is an effective, intense journey of terror and survival in the untamed frontier." The story is loosely based on a historical incident on the Oregon Trail in 1845, in which frontier guide Stephen Meek led a wagon train on an ill-fated journey through the Oregon desert along the route later known as the Meek Cutoff in the western United States. "Meek´s Cutoff" is numbingly boring, missing all marks in terms of tension and drama, despite having very nice cinematography displaying a lovely landscape and an ok ensemble cast.

Really slow, nonsensical, I watched the whole movie waiting for something to happen and nothing. I don't know how anyone could rate this movie highly 🙄

Sep 27, 2022

A total nonsense movie, that could have been at least a 2 or 3 star without any real effort by the director.

Despite good actors and initial starting point, it is like the middle of an episode: does not tell you where they come from, don't know where they go, and ignore why. Disappointing.

If only it had an ending! The truth is that the director ran out of budget and they weren't able to film the ending according to the script. So, they just ended with the trekkers on Oregon trail dying of thirst and no resolution. Some people might say that's a film technique but I call that theft of my time and attention. It's not fair to take the viewers on this journey, which by the way was beautifully filmed with very sparing dialogue for a slow build and then just leave us hanging. I want my money back!

A western filled with realism that moves at a methodical, deliberate pace. Full of long takes and long shots, natural lighting (even in no-light nighttime scenes), and a minimal score. A little slow, but it makes you pay close attention.

I have great trouble remembering the name of this film, although I'm haunted by it. I wanted to check what others thought. It tends to crop up in conversation, eventually, when I'm with 2, or more, of the of the 3, Western fans, who accompanied me to see it. I'll never be allowed to forget it, it has become something they can tease me with, telling others how dreadful it was, how they kept thinking something must be about to happen. I apologise once more and hang my head in embarrassment, repeating that I persuaded them to come on the strength of many excellent reviews by film critics and how, I, too, had thought (hoped, since others had come at my invitation) that it would justify its slow pace even boredom (I couldn't blame one of my friends for falling asleep, his snoring filled some empty moments), perhaps being a deliberately slow burn in order to build the suspense until something momentous HAPPENED but it never did. That's nearly 2 hours of our lives none of us will ever get back again!

Kelly Reichardts is definitely one of the greatest directors ever. This film, Meek's cutoff, could be her definite masterpiece. Visually stunning and full of tension and emotion, in each beautifully filmed shot we see charachters full of textures, built remarkably for Michelle Williams, as well as the rest of the cast. Exciting and tense, amazingly crafted, a tale about prejudices, vanity, power, fear and loneliness. Great.

You won't live longer but it will seem longer.

Feb 25, 2021

Bruce Greenwood captivates and revels in the titular character while the screenplay doesn't characterize the protagonists in effective fashion. This atmospheric glacial western captivates enough initially but seems to dwindle down into cinematic purgatory with it's seemingly incomplete story.

1 hr 45 min of nothing. Don't be lured in by the cast - I couldn't believe this movie actually won some awards. The night scenes were so dark it was difficult to know what was going on. One time I thought there was potential, but nope. A waste of time.

WOW. What a complete waste of time! One of the worst films I have ever seen. A self-indulgent exercise by the writer/director whose grasp of the history of the West, as well as the concept of drama, is as lacking as water was in this film. If I could rate this a zero, I would. Half of the film is set in complete darkness, and the other half is in another language. It appeared that the ending occurred when the film crew ran out of tape. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!

One of the worst movies ever, every copy should be gathered and deleted. Not is the movie dull and depressing it ends without rhyme nor reason; they obviously just ran out of money. I hive it 0 out of 100%. The fact that the Rotten Tomatoes critics gave this 86% only underscores how incompetent they truly are. The audience score of 54% is also extremely generous.
