Memory Reviews

Feb 8, 2025

A peaceful cinematic retreat. A portrayal of the challenges that must be overcome when human minds have crossed the threshold. He forgets, belittled and preyed upon. She has a daughter who she clings on to desperately while dark bedrooms and irrelevant therapy groups. It's actually an excellent story of shared redemption. A great portrayal of mother daughter bond that navigates the fears and hopes. Precise acting makes the story heartwarming. Great cinematography and visuals to tell what's unspoken. Good background music and audio effects. It's a well written thought-provoking story that's well worth your time.

Information is given in a drip way, and surprising each time, in this movie. To me two very sensitive topics treated in a very sensitive way, covered under the title, Memory. Judgment disappears behind connection, love, compassion, and fun! I do recommend this movie, to teenagers included.

Memory is a beautiful and tender film. A film about understanding and compassion. Superbly acted, it's about memory, what we can't remember and what we try not to. Sylvia is a single mother with a teenage daughter. She is a recovering alcoholic and social worker. When she attends her sister's high school reunion she meets Saul, who then follows her home, scaring Sylvia. Saul waits outside her apartment all night in the rain and Sylvia is concerned. She finds his brother's number, takes him home and finds out her has early onset dementia. Eventually they will form a strong relationship. Saul is battling day to day and Sylvia has a sad past we learn more about. Saul and Sylvia lean on each other, but perhaps they aren't best for each other. This is a strong and impressive film, a film of deep and quiet emotion. It has a strong streak of empathy and compassion. Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard are superb in strong but understated performances. A quietly great film that is very impressive.

At last a movie from Michel Franco without a non fucked up ending. The movie itself is fucked up but not the ending.

Very dark film, not impressed by actors. Perhaps just not my cup of tea.

Memory is a sad film, mostly - diving into really adult topics without sensationalizing them. Chastain and Sarsgaard are a weird pairing, but it makes it gritty and real.

Powerful flick for those who have experienced or have concerns with dementia. Powerful flick for those who have experienced or have concerns with sexual abuse. Chastain could have carried this film on her own but didn't need to as supporting cast was stellar

A beautiful and engrossing film. Chastain and Saarsgard were at their very best and extremely good together. Any gaps or moroseness in the storyline were a nonissue because it was such a pleasure to watch their performances.

Nice film …slow sometimes but good acting and feels real

This is an odd movie but I loved most of the acting. Chastain, Scarsgaard, Brooke Timber, and Elsie Fisher were all excellent, but there was a bit of a disconnect with the story. I get it, but they missed the mark as far as ensemble, timing, and writing. A bit of a disconnect with the emotional issues these two carry. A bit scattered. It could have been told in a more linear way and the sister/family and mother were uncomfortably stiff without showing us the emotion behind it. It wasn't my favorite, but the main actors kept me there.

OMG! This is the most beautiful film. The casting was perfect. It touched me more than any other film that Ihave seen this year… and I see a LOT of films! It was magical!

I really, really, REALLY wanted to like this film. Jessica Chastain is such a gifted actress that I thought this would be a “cant miss” film. I was so wrong. There was zero direction to the horrible screenplay in that my wife and I would watch a scene and then ask “what was the point of that?” Many scenes seemed to have been thrown in simply to increase the running time. Conversely, many scenes that COULD have been relevant to the plot were seriously cut in editing or written for minimal time/lines. The first warning sign was when Jessica’s character meets Sarsgaard’s and well……really?? Is her “mistaken identity” truly believable? No. When that was shortly revealed, that’s when I knew I should just change the channel. But unfortunately, I kept going hoping something would happen to make the film worthwhile. Nothing did. And the ending? I’ll just say this: “WHAT ending?”

Very slow. Lots of dead time. I kept wanting more but there was nothing. Waste of time.

Tragic and yet beautiful story. Jessica Chastain did great job 😍

Because I have a family member with dementia, this resonated with me. It is an interesting twist to have one character who cannot remember very much at all and another character who is tortured by her memories, real and not real. The whole cast is great. You cannot predict what will happen—just like in life.

Touching and well acted. Though the pacing was at times excessively slow, the emotional intrigue was compelling. The story had a certain impact, especially for those of us who have experienced the same personal issues undertaken in the movie. Bittersweet and tender, in the end, it would be difficult to describe this one as anything other than painfully uplifting.

Outstanding performances by Chastain and Sarsgaard. A unique story that is depressing and gut-wrenching, and completely worth watching.

I have mixed reactions to watching the movie. It's well-acted, and I enjoyed the pacing of the editing. However, the story doesn't feel like it goes anywhere. It is more of a peek into the daily lives of people attempting to make do from one day to the next. The premise of a main character who vividly remembers her traumatic past and gets romantically involved with a person who has dementia is glaringly apparent with the intentional irony.

It wasn't perfect but I did love this movie long after I watched it. The way the story is given to the audience at first didn't connect right away. It takes time to figure out what is behind the actions/reactions of people. There is some confusion but maybe we were meant to feel that like the characters are feeling it. The two actors are wonderful as this unfolds and the meaning is fulfilled when you get the bigger picture. Very moving and its message stays with you.

Memory is a emotionally complex but reserved film, which explores themes of trauma, redemption and shared memories. Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard both deliver sincere performances and have great onscreen chemistry together.
