Merchants of Doubt Reviews

Oct 25, 2024

Have know about all this for decades. Makes me mad to even watch this since nothing has changed.

Explains what motivates the deniers to take such an ignorant stance. The effectiveness of distraction is also masterfully displayed through the magicians.

I can't ever remember saying, "Wow...what an asshole!" as much as while watching this documentary.

scientists vs. tobacco, big pharma, climate change deniers lobbyists. a great documentary showcasing charm trumping solid facts. one big punch in the gut!

it was interesting, but, nothing that we didn't know already about the Tobacco industry and the climate change concerns

This documentary stirs up anxiety about our now "bought and sold democracy" to evil companies such as Koch Brothers, ExxonMobil, etc.

The magic stuff is fun, but this is not a real documentary, but more of a pro climate change presentation. Seems a little cheap to compare Climate Change skeptics, to the tobacco companies. Ad Homonym. And seems counter-factual, when they have the Climate changers playing the victims, and acting terrorized. Aren't they the ones that have 97% on their side?? Aren't all the grants going to Change studies? Don't their proponents win Nobel prizes? It is certainly obsessed with who is denying the claims. But it seems to ignore the fact that all the change predictions always turn out wrong. Really wrong. The Skeptic publisher got interested in climate change when all the 70s predictions turned out wrong. But doesn't acknowledge all the current ones are wrong too. Ignores the 20 years of no global temperature increase. And THEY say the stolen climate emails weren't really about making up data. But it's pretty clear they were. They say they were investigated, but they were always investigated by their friends and fellow change proponents. It poo poos the "threat" to our freedoms to live our lives, which is naïve. It's everywhere. And very statist to downplay the treat. Never acknowledges that what the Changers want to do, thru legislation, would bankrupt the world, and would have almost no impact on CO2 in atmosphere. Never acknowledges that American is producing less CO2 each year, and the rest of the world won't change their output even if we do. No evidence that rising CO2 levels actually causes any change, since 97% of "greenhouse gases" in the atmosphere is actually water vapor. CO2 is almost inconsequential, except that it lets politicians control industry, and people. They found a couple people who had switch to Change, but ignore all those who have decided it's not warming, or not man-made. I actually wish the world were warming slightly, as it would be great for food production. It's too bad that It's likely cooling, which will be bad for us. It's disingenuous when they act like they've been out played and beaten by some smart hidden CABAL. Yet they seem to have won at every level, without evidence of warming . . . They claim hurricanes have been worse do to climate change, when it's well known they have been much milder recently. "There will be huge loses from storms" when insurance companies don't see anything like that. I gave up at about 1 hour in, when it became clear they weren't going to deal with any of the hole in their story, and just keep up casting aspersions on skeptics. It was well made, but ultimately unpersuasive to me due to lack of anything other than trying to discredit skeptics.

Excellent documentary on the way major corporations have swayed Americans to believe in and vote against issues that are against their best interests and those of their children and grandchildren. And it is all because a few individuals don't give a damn about anybody except themselves, even their own kids and grandkids, and they find it funny that they can make people believe them.

Nothing too groundbreaking, but well made and well presented documentary about the special interest groups (corporate) that work hard to manipulate public opinion.

Fascinating look into the world of spin doctors who pretty much sell their souls to manufacture doubt around issues which have overwhelming scientific evidence (e.g. climate change, affects of smoking). A must see for any development activist to have a better understanding of underhanded strategies taken to maintain status quo.

A scathing look at the power of the lobbying industry in the United States. It effectively links the history of lobbyists with the global warming political screen. This is a documentary that all high school students should see.

Sometimes you should watch a movie that you know is going to leave you pissed off. It's very effective at defining some vague truths you might already know and revealing some new ones. The director, Robert Kenner, has kept up the quality he showed in Food, Inc.

Very obvious, one-sided climate alarmist piece, disguised as something else. The only reason tobacco and others are included is to associate climate skeptics with them.

Great movie, but the kinds of people who need to see this are never going to because they have already closed their mind...

Nov 18, 2015

One of the best documentary films I've seen in 2015.

Nov 16, 2015

good documentary about scientists that are hired by special interest groups who are paid to make ppl doubt things like smoking, global warming, chemicals, etc.

Nov 6, 2015

ever wonder why there's been a decades-enduring debate about global warming? Must see.

Beware of the wolves in a sheep's skin. I want to begin with what usually comes in the final paragraph in any review that it is a must see film. No matter who you are, whatever your profession is, you must not skip it for many reasons. The film was based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Naomi Oreskes and directed by the Oscar nominated documentary 'Food, Inc.' filmmaker. Recently I read somewhere that 'there are more fake flamingos in the world than real ones'. I thought it was a stat that makes clear there are very less flamingos than we presumed. But the point is it gives a different meaning when the same line used as a reference for this film. It is going to be big stride, yes it is. It all began after the WWII and carried out throughout 50 years during the Cold War, but just recent decades everyone realised its seriousness. When someone interferes with our personal thing, stating that he's an official from the respective field, we ask for the identity proof. But what if it is a conspiracy, how we are going to know it. The common people are always falling prey for such tricks because of the corrupted ministers and the powerful giant corporates. Like, we're the sheep herd and they are the wolves in the sheep's skin. This film is not trying to expose them their entire wrong doings, but on a particular topic, and that is the Global Warming. The media and press plays a crucial part here, but some of them opted a wrong path. Maybe because of the poor knowledge and investigation, or influenced people around them. So the story opens with the cigarettes, how the tobacco companies fooled people in the 60s, 70s till the 90s. The book this movie adapted was written by an American historian, so it's all about the things that happened in the States. But it is still very much the world's concern too, as America is one of the top countries to export modern science and technology to all the corners, especially the third world countries. "We're leaving our children and grandchildren, the legacy of people who failed to lead." Today's world's hot topic is, the climate change. Because of human there are plenty of species gone extinct than the natural extinct happened in the presence of human alongside. So, the biggest them all is he's posing a same threat to himself. If that happens, the human will be wiped out. The earth will recycle itself over the thousand years of evolution and the life will be restored, the new kind. Human is the only animal on the earth who do stuff for pleasure and those pleasures comes in many ways. One such thing is the money. Science is not one hundred per cent perfect, not yet, but that is the closest estimation that we have today to predict anything advancely. The world is not the same compared to 100 years ago, the religion is no more threat to the science. The evolution in science is taking place at a brisk pace, lots of stuffs were studied, understood, discovered in the last two decades than over two thousand years. Those who are doing their work is constantly interrupted by the new kind of troublemakers. Those people are the hired counterparts to the scientists who claims they are experts, but why they are doing it is a disgusting truth. It is a very good message movie. You might probably realise from now on who to believe and why, because that was this documentary's notion that makes people open their eyes to the truth and reality. If you're still in your blindfold, then you're on the wrong side with the wrong people. I want to make you clear on one final thing that this documentary is not trying to prove the Global Warming theory, but it was a debate between the people who tried to stop it and the people who tried to prove it was not a hoax. It is about exposing the dirty works. 9/10

'the art of deception' -Must watch

extremely bleak but rightly so, Merchants of Doubt sheds an informed light on those who are the human representation of evil in contemporary society: the individuals who feed on strong and irrational human fears to shape public perception in favor of the corporations who least respect them. Participant Media has, yet again, produced a political, social and environmentally relevant film that continues to establish them as the most important production company in Hollywood.
