Midnight Cowboy Reviews

Apr 22, 2025

Grounded by commanding performances from Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight, Midnight Cowboy is a searing deconstruction of the masculine image and human commerce.

Stranger than what I expected, but definitely still worth watching in 2025

Great Movie, the difficulties of trying to accomplish your dream in the big city especially when your best friend is sick. Very emotional/dramatic film that should definitely be on your notch.

Midnight Cowboy was gratuitous sleaze 55 years ago, and what's even more depressing is that it was a harbinger of the sleaze to come in the ensuing decades.

"Midnight Cowboy" doesn't fall into my favorite Best Picture winners, but this is a good movie that really does leave a profound impact. It can be difficult to watch but it is full of really unique editing choices as well as featuring two memorable performances. I found myself a bit unsure of where it was going at first, but by the end, I really felt the emotional weight of the story. I also think this is a movie that embodies the time it came out and it really feels like a time capsule in that way. It is a bold film for its time and its impact is still felt today. Overall, it is a unique and well-made film that is maybe one of the bleakest and unglamorous depictions of New York City that kept me engaged and often exhausted, similar to the characters it portrays, and I think it is a film I admire from a filmmaking perspective.

Not incredibly strong storytelling. The movie follows a naiive traveller and his newfound mate trying to get ahead in the big apple. The ending was quite predictable. But the characters were wonderfully compelling and I just wanted to keep watching them - the doe eyed tough guy and his hustler sidekick. I could see where a certain muppet character got his cues from.

I watched this movie after knowing it won 3 oscars and ranked 36 in WGA 100 greatest screenplays. However i liked the acting of Dustin Hoffman but , found this movie bit overated and dull . I didn't get emotionally connected with lead characters and found them unlikeable as it normalise their unlawful acts . Furthermore both of them do not seem to really care about each other till the end .Overall it is one time watch movie.

One of my favourite films of all time. Brilliantly acted characters draw you in. Full of emotion and empathy, bit of humour, shows the harder side of the 60s love in. Soundtrack and editing are brilliant, and think Jon Voight is incredible. Perfect film if feeling sorry for myself.

Really good movie with an amazing atmosphere that will make you appreciate what you have. I just found it to be kind of slow.

An extremly well acted movie that sad to say is a product of its time. The story is so gravely depressing that I never want to watch this film again.

As much as I like the two main characters, I quite dislike the cinematography of this film. Mainly the style how Joe's flashbacks, Rico's daydreaming and the party are filmed are not my cup of tea.

This movie will forever be a footnote in history as the first and only X-rated motion picture to win Best Picture. Of course, viewing it in 2020, it comes across as a rough PG-13, maybe a soft R. I had never watched this film, and I wasn't sure exactly what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a moving portrait of one of the most unlikely friendships in cinema history. It's never conveyed for certain whether Rico's friendship with Joe has romantic intentions or not, but it doesn't matter - this is a story of two lonely people who make a connection, and by the end I was on the verge of tears. Voight excels as our main protagonist, but he is frankly blown off the screen by Hoffman in an absolutely spectacular performance. I'm not a Hoffman fan, but he is absolutely brilliant here, and this joins TOOTSIE and KRAMER VS. KRAMER as his crowning achievements. It's a role that could have so easily gone over the top, but he is perfect! The movie has a bit too many flashbacks and psychedelic montages, and there are no supporting characters of much substance, but these are minor quibbles. I am so glad to have finally caught up with this movie on the 50th anniversary of its Oscar win. It's a movie I won't forget anytime soon.

This film from the late 60's came to trace a before and after in the way of film-making and, in the process, demolished the myth of the American dream and the stereotype of the cowboy as we know it. The highlight: a budding Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight.

This movie should be mandatory for all would-be transplants to New York City. Yes, even now.

A groundbreaking movie that hasn't really stood the test of time. On the plus side: there's some striking camerawork, a strong soundtrack and an interesting insight into 60s New York. On the minus side: Dustin Hoffman is hammy (almost unwatchably so), the film lapses into caricature (the apartment is comically decrepit, and I could've lived without the generic 'drug trip scene') and the melodrama is hard to bear. It's important to watch as a part of cinema and social history, but no longer compelling in the way that movies like Dog Day Afternoon and Taxi Driver still are.

Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight have an amazing chemistry in one of the best movies ever made. Precise and never ceasing it has an ability to captivate and entrance. Ahead of its time. One of the best friendships ever put to film. Final Score: 9.4/10

A truly classic movie that I've loved for many years. Midnight Cowboy is a movie that belongs in my DVD collection. I wouldn't be without it. A must see

A grim and at times a disturbing look into the life of two complete opposites who become friends on the streets on New York. This movie is about loneliness as much as it's about friendship. Hoffman delivers in spades in what is arguably his greatest performance.

Everyone in New York is a hustler and the almighty dollar will save you or you will be it's slave. A superbly acted indictment of social inequality in 'the big apple'.

I'm 67, and always heard of this movie, but I think it was so unappealing on it's face, I never felt I wanted to see it. My loss. Finally tonight in a fit of the why nots, I saw it and was blown away. An absolute masterpiece that should not be missed. The themes, and the acting can't be topped. I've seen many Hoffman movies, so he was no surprise, but not so much Jon Voight, and OMG! I finally get him! Wow was he great in this! I'm also not a fan of 60s and 70s movies, for me, they just didn't age well (generally speaking), but this one really holds up, and remains entertaining, even to my 2023 sensibilities. Watch it.
