Military Wives Reviews

It benefits hugely from the casting of the ever-delightful Kristin Scott Thomas and Sharon Horgan - their chalk and cheese is a perfect combination that holds interest in material that might have got a bit humdrum and schmalzy.

At a time when our world is drowning in uncertainty, Military Wives offers hope. It's the very definition of a feel-good movie.

Military Wives absolutely succeeds in what it sets out to do - which is, admittedly, not a particularly grand ambition, but that doesn't mean it's not a mark worth hitting.

The entire cast is aces, especially Thomas.

| Original Score: 3/4 | May 23, 2020

Kind of fun and touching without ever being all that interesting... It didn't do enough to really earn its laughs or its tears. I wish that it had a little more personality and pizazz to make up for it.

Just like The Full Monty... [Director] Peter Cattaneo has a theme that he likes, and he does it very well.

Kristin Scott Thomas and Sharon Horgan do their best to elevate Military Wives from a simple tune to a symphony, but the notes just aren't there on the page.

| Original Score: 2/4 | May 22, 2020

No surprises await, but the performances by Scott Thomas, Horgan and company and some pleasant harmonizing make "Military Wives" palatable Memorial Day weekend viewing.

The choir is as much the result of opposing forces as common interests.

| Original Score: B+ | May 22, 2020

Though deeply reliant on formula and wrapped in a blanket of bland, this crowdpleaser about a choir of solders wives squeaks past the rough spots thanks to the acting alchemy of Kristin Scott Thomas and Sharon Horgan

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | May 21, 2020

There is so little surprise here, and so little effort into at least maintaining the façade of invention, that you might as just well sit down and write the narrative beats yourself.

| Original Score: 2/4 | May 21, 2020

There's nothing in "Military Wives" you haven't seen before, but these are times of comfort food, and this formulaic comedy-drama... so determined to be uplifting that your up may be lifted in spite of itself.

| Original Score: 2/4 | May 21, 2020

Right now, I have to say that this meatloaf tastes pretty good.

| May 21, 2020

The title "Military Wives" is plain to the point of blandness. This good-hearted comedy-drama, starring Kristin Scott Thomas and Sharon Horgan, deserves a little better.

With more patience, and a little rigor, Military Wives could have been a massive crowd-pleaser. As is, it's only fleetingly charming.

| May 19, 2020

Its formula inevitably rises up like a wave and submerges everything Thomas is trying to do.

| Original Score: 2/4 | May 19, 2020

The film seems almost content to have you forget about everything that inspired it in the first place.

| Original Score: 2/4 | May 17, 2020

Military Wives may follow a formula of sorts and you'll see every plot turn coming but it'll put a smile on your face nonetheless.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 6, 2020

Military Wives is loosely based on real events, but it's clearly been made with a firm eye on the box office. It will no doubt please its target audience, but, despite several good performances, it's too much the mixture as before to linger long ...

| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 13, 2020

Predictable, but both women give it their best. There's a natural and useful contrast between Scott Thomas, so patrician and brittle, and Horgan, with her unforced comic timing and her Irish vowels. Their performances are the film's best asset.
