Million Dollar Baby Reviews

Apr 23, 2025

A masterpiece by Eastwood. Excellent performance by Swank and Freeman. Well deserving of the Oscars in the respective categories. Eastwood's score for the film was also fantastic.

All Time Classic. The cinematography is so well directed but you wonder why it's so dark and depressing (never dull) for the whole runtime. But the turn this makes in the second half makes it 100% justifiable. The fights are really well done. Besides the Championship fight none of the fights really are that long or in depth. But this is a film about a special relationship about a true odd couple. One helps the other achieve their dream and the other helps be the daughter and a chance to atone for his mistakes. It's a sports film and a melodrama mixed beautifully together. The editin and pacing are masterful. We weave effortlessly between Eastwood & Swank without ever losing focus through the narration of Freeman who is excellent too. You'd never think Swank & Eastwood would have such good chemistry. Swank gives one of the best performances ever and arguably her best. The music is really good but barely used especially in the first half. Very simple but very memorable. It would've been nice if there would've been ore variety and use though. Everyone should give this a try once though as long as they know going in this is a truly brutal film and hard to watch. One of the best sports films ever made.

It's a great movie. But there was no need to make it so dramatic and sad ending. Just like recipe shows use Cancer in a cheap attempt to evoke emotion. As they say, "Say it, without saying it!". Be smarter than that!!

Over 20 years old and Clint Eastwood has made another one of his masterpieces with genuine awe behind the director's chair, inside the film, Swank and Freeman put on their best peformances a female boxer goes all out proving to her coach she can make it in the big leagues the film evokes such raw emotions from the first frame right up to the-end credits there's almost literally no music throughout the whole film since the drama and intensity is raised so high the film's climax may be a tad depressing and morbid but it fits the story's context Eastwood's no longer the exiciting action, Western filmmaker; the man is a complex, emotional storyteller casting top-notch actors and leaving a huge impact on the viewer all I can say is job well-done

The writing is phenomenal. I love the dialogue. Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood banter is great not to mention his arguments with the priest. Prime Hilary Swank and classic amazing Morgan Freeman narrating. The end is very depressing and dark

I really don't think this movie deserves a 90% rating purely because of the subversion of expectations in the plot twist with the stool turning Maggie into a quadriplegic. Everything about the movie was great up until that point, but that ruined it for me, the rest is unwatchable. The story was going in the direction of Maggie becoming the champ and that's what I wanted to see. This movie should have been a slam dunk 10/10 but ended up throwing it all away for a pointless moral dilemma.

Amazing masterpiece. It was slow in some parts, but it didn't matter that much.

I detest this movie, or any film that emphasizes ugliness the way this one does. Depressing plot, dismal ending, and littered with cliche characters (the cantankerous coach, his loyal sidekick, the bully picking on the handicapped boxer, the dirty competition, the scheming family, Swank's Maggie being the sole exception). Seeing this movie once was one time too many. The worst Best Picture winner in Oscar history.

Eastwood is an absolute master storyteller and this may be his masterpiece. Along with Grab Torino, Flags of our Fathers & The Mule. You almost don't know why the movies our so engaging, but you just don't want to miss a moment. Excellence!

God damn, I have no words. This movie hit as hard as the punches thrown by the boxers. It starts off as such a charming and uplifting sports underdog adventure and then cuts you deep two thirds in with its heartbreakingly grounded aftermath to one particularly nasty fight. Most movies would spend maybe like 5, 10, 20 minutes tops with the hospital scenes. But this movie really lets it sink in the tragic and grim realities of medical recovery and the things that might be lost for good. Contrasted poignantly with Morgan Freeman’s battle scars being just light enough to grant him enough functionality and freedom to keep on living a healthy and normal life. The movie is Clint Eastwood at his best with all the humorous gruff n’ tough Clint mixed in with some real heart with both Hilary Swank and Morgan Freeman’s characters. You also get a really good understanding of the careful techniques and physical precision behind boxing. How it’s not just brute strength, but careful and diligent manipulation of the body and mind. That gentle guitar music opens and bookends the movie on such a bittersweet note with just enough hope to ease you through the pain the characters endured. It’s a beautiful movie and easily one of Clint Eastwood’s best works, as well as one of the best sports dramas I have ever seen.

The film portrays the power of a dream, of womanhood, of great odds against adversity.... It it is extremely well put together by master class performances from Hilary Swank, Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood.... It is a film that is imprinted in your mind forever.... a real Clint Eastwood masterpiece.

A very good movie that I think needed a different ending. That would take it from a very good movie to being an all time great movie. I do like this movie a lot though.

It's a film you'll only want to watch once, but it's still great and powerful.

Excellent movie, though heart wrenching.

It was slow in some parts, but overall, this is an emotional roller coaster of a film. Very heartbreaking. 💔

The greatest strength of this sports drama is that Clint Eastwood gives it voice and personality, without imitating what has already been seen, and at the same time deals intelligently with the sensitive subject of euthanasia. Among his basic filmography, it is one of his must-see films.

The film "Million Dollar Baby," featuring Hilary Swank, Clint Eastwood, and Morgan Freeman, along with notable appearances from Mykul Peña and Anthony Mackie, is one I finally decided to watch for the first time. Despite hearing all the praise and accolades surrounding it, I had somehow put off seeing it until now, and I can only regret not watching it sooner. Clint Eastwood has an undeniable ability to captivate audiences, regardless of the role he takes on. He has developed his own unique style and remains one of the great actors of our time. In this film, he plays an older mentor figure with a compelling message, demonstrating that he has all the qualities needed to continue his impressive legacy. Morgan Freeman is, without a doubt, an extraordinary talent. His voice alone has a calming and resonant quality that draws viewers in, making his performances memorable. He consistently brings depth to his characters and enhances the emotional impact of every scene he's in. Hilary Swank delivers a remarkable performance as the underdog striving to become the "Million Dollar Baby." She is an incredibly talented actress, and in this role, she truly shines. While I sometimes find her performances to be somewhat one-dimensional, in this case, she fully embraces her character’s journey, showcasing her range and skill. I commend her for her outstanding work in this film. Visually, the movie has a dim and somber tone, which sometimes made it feel like I was wandering through dark streets, and I wished for a bit more light to engage with the story. However, the overall execution of the film is impressive. The writing is sharp, and the direction is masterful. This is a timeless film that will undoubtedly endure, with audiences revisiting it for years to come. New viewers like myself will eventually discover its brilliance and appreciate the powerful storytelling it offers.
