Miracle at St. Anna Reviews

I bought this movie, it was so good. It may be that cultural barriers led to this movie being sadly underrated.

Too bad for Spike Lee. He used to be good director

One of the few war movies I've liked.

A simply atrocious movie with zero redeeming qualities. It is also slanderous to the United States military in its wholly erroneous representations. Complete garbage.

A piece of italian history told with american style. Hard recipe.

I normally love Spike Lee's work but this was overly long and emotionally manipulative. Perhaps it is because he didn't write it.

I Love Miracle At St Anna it's definitely one of Spike Lee's Most entertaining films to date & one my favorite war pictures. I never read the book but I thought action was gripping, suspenseful, story was intriguing, the characters were Likable & believable. Michael Ealy, Omar Benson Miller, & Laz Alonso did a good job in thr lead roles. One of Spike Lee's best films to date.

Miracle at St. Anna had the potential to serve as one of the best films recognizing the African American's role in WWII, but woefully disappointed and didn't capitalize on a intriguing story line. Highlighting the 92nd Infantry Division, as the only black division to see combat in Europe, the film suffered from serious editing issues ( i felt it was at least 20 minutes too long), typical Hollywood stereotypes, an overzealous and distracting soundtrack, faulty character development, and a shoddy ending. The editing was the biggest problem for me in that too many scenes were unnecessary and the important ones were not properly developed. The relationship between the boy and his dead brother did not work nor did the fling between the italian woman and the soldier. The rambling conversations by secondary characters in the village served no purpose as well. The few battle scenes were enticing and could've been extended. The stereotypes were irritating and unnecessary. The big solider was border line special needs. I don't understand why he couldn't have been developed as just a big, peaceful guy without the country bumpkin language and mannerisms. The defiant, lustful solider with the gold teeth and always handy full pack of cigarettes was just what the film DIDNT need. Then there are the racist officers with the typical insulting one liners to exclaim what we already know about the military and society at that time (sheez, and even now...) The soundtrack was just plain awful. Ominous, villain music for the germans and the horns and upbeat chords for the americans. I wished there was a mute button for the soundtrack in that it was very distracting and forced. Why Spike Lee would want to pulverize the audiences eardrums with the corny, continuous orchestra is beyond me. Character development missed the mark in that some of the acting performances were pretty good. I enjoyed the squad leader's zeal but the forced conflict between Mr. Gold Tooth was counterproductive because the real conflict was with the germans and the racist american leadership. I would've enjoyed more interaction between the italian partisans and the soliders by joing the two cultures and creating more impact for the ending. The ending battle scene was unbelievable in that a german officer appears, hands the main character a gun and says "protect yourself." The curtain closes and "poof," then the superior numbered germans are gone and the reinforcements have arrived to complete the cliche. And the final movie ending felt as if everyone was ready for lunch and wanted to beat the crowd. The spokesperson in the white suit on the beach who detailed how the benefactor was able to "spring" the last survivor, was ridiculous. Either develop the final scene between the now grown boy and survivor or delete it all together and let the audience speculate. Overall, it was a major disappointment for me because of the potential of the subject matter. And more so because i doubt if anyone will try to recreate this story which would be a travesty because of the contributions of the 92nd. But i would recommend watching it merely for the insight gained about a forgotten group of men who served in our military.

This movie is a long journey and understandably the mixed reception is correct. The messy plot overshadows the characters and it leaves a film searching for its identity. Spike Lee injects his style into the film but he leaves a film at over 2.5 hours and you'll find yourself losing interest at certain points. The film didn't deserve to be this long and it demonstrates that as a filmmaker you need to make correct decisions about pacing. This is a somewhat fictional and historic mix and the balance is overbearing at times. The central plot thread is glossed over and expects us to care later on. Spike Lee is a talented character filmmaker but he feels out of place with this film. There's a lot crammed into this film and I will state it won't be for everyone. It attempts to be a long sweeping epic but the pacing and the characters can only take you so far. 17/05/2020

Graphic violence made me realize that war is a tough business. Pretty girl, though.

I thought the movie was very good and the story was interesting. Not sure I understand it, there is something about it. I do not think they got the story across they wanted or I just don't get it. I thought the characters were good. The men in the Buffalo Squadron were great characters.

This overly long Spike Lee film is badly acted, unevenly edited, and boring.

This movie was alright. Very inspirational at the end. Good plot.

Lee's war pic is long and could've easily shaved an hour of running time while not disturbing the movies core narrative. Its lack of star power underwhelms.

Decent movie but I hate Spike Lee and his race baiting ways so I dropped it a star.

An obvious drama that's coated from head to toe with sugary taste that's near diabetes inducing. Miracle at St. Anna is too long and fails to reach the heart.
