Miracle Mile Reviews
This is one those unique films that feels like a surreal fever dream, with a pulsating 80s synth wave Tangerine Dream soundtrack to boot. It tells a worrisome story that shifts tones from romance into an apocalyptic mystery regarding the reality of a potentially looming threat. Edwards and Winningham give great performances. Although their love story setup feels contrived, they make it work with their chemistry. It's no coincidence they ended up married 30 years after making this film (I was surprised to discover this myself). There are moments the plot moves along in a seemingly random sequence of events that just feel plopped in (e.g. a sequence where he wanders into a random late night gym trying to find a helicopter pilot at 4am... huh?). But overall, the film works in delivering an uncomfortable reminder about the brittle nature of modern life. Definitely worth a view.
Some movie, this! I had never heard of 'Miracle Mile' until a mere few hours ago, when I simply chose to watch it on Prime Video due to its cool poster. With only (a relatively) small amount of watchers on a few sites, I'm surprised this hasn't reached further. As per with me, I hit play without knowing anything about this movie; I actually knew it was classed under 'apocalyptic' from when I minorly vetted it (checked for sequels etc.), but had forgotten. The early few scenes have an odd vibe to them, though I only mean that positively - it fits perfectly, particularly the subtle omnipresent score. Anthony Edwards is the only actor I previously knew, well apart from Kurt Fuller (in only his second movie); I also thought I recognised the guy at the diner next to Harlan, but apparently I haven't seen Alan Rosenberg in anything - must be a doppelganger. Anyway, waffle aside, Edwards is very good - nice to see him away from 'Top Gun'. The aforementioned, coupled with an interesting story and a nice and short run time of just under 90 minutes, are reasons why I'd say you should watch this - it definitely deserves more eyes on it.
Came across this while browsing, I’ve enjoyed other films of the 80's dealing with nuclear doom so I figured I’d give it a shot. Much better than expected, with some Hollywood flare that other films of this genre and era did not have. I really liked how this was done, the worst part may have been that it could have been given more time, a lot actually, but holy hell, this was great. Could have been a trilogy.
A rather stunning movie especially given the time it was made. Not only did De Jarnatt get to keep his weird and bleak ending but there are so many supporting characters treated with a kind of honestly and humanity you don't really get from much else from the 80s. Edwards and Winningham are perfectly cast.
A marvel from start to finish. Edwards and Winningham are superb, as are all the supporting cast. The cinematography is dazzling. This is the best apocalypse movie I've ever seen, and it doesn't need a bunch of CGI effects to make its point. That doesn't mean that the visuals aren't impressive. The entire film is shot with an emphasis on primary colors, and there are several astounding scenes that will remain indelibly in your head. The fate of the two protagonists is Shakespearean tragic, but you'll still be glad you took the journey with them.
Golly, I read the other reviews and consider they may be paid reviews. This movie is kind of like a surreal comedy, as though someone is having a dream. There is a scene near the start where our protagonist is caught in a fire. Up until this fire, seems like there is hope for the movie. Then after the fire, he wakes up hours late to a date. This is where the movie begins to be derailed. In the end he and the "date of his life" die together sinking in a helicopter after a nuclear war. Yeah the buildings are falling down, but somehow the helicopter is able to autorotate to a body of water. So if one considers the fellow is dead in the fire at the beginning and the rest is some goofy death transition, then maybe it is a comedy? The real tragedy here is that I spent two hours of my life hoping the movie was going to recover. It didn't.
Interesting to see this movie from the 80's, when a nuclear exchange was not unthinkable. Of course, North Korea and Putin's Russia make this seem like deja vu.
Stylistically great, pure 80s flick. As if like a dark comic. I almost slept in the first 10 min, and needed to restart. but soon after that the story really began, tension retained towards the end though not really sure what's happening. Given the short runtime with tight budget, you could see enough mixture of apocalyptic disaster panic and romance. The score is effective made by Tangerine Dream. Could be look dated now but it's a cult.
"Miracle Mile" has a uniqueness which provides the audience with such a startling tonal switch. What starts as a standard 1980's rom com staring Mare Winningham and Anthony Edwards ( Staples of the John Hughes Teen films and real life couple ), ends with the outbreak of World War Three. The performances are outstanding as tension builds towards the characters desperate attempts to evacuate Los Angeles. " Miracle Mile" is certainly one of the most realistic depictions of the panic and chaos that would ensue after public warning of a nuclear attack.
Bleak but gripping impending apocalypse movie which is a lot more powerful than those with far bigger budgets.
Stylistically unique examination of a concentrated cross-section of humanity’s real-time reaction to the (potential?) prologue to the apocalypse. Swings effortlessly from quirky to grounded, sweet to severe, & hopeful to bleak. #nitrosMovieChallenge
A underrated 80s flick, a must watch which I recommend going in blind is the best way to watch it for the first time
The plot requires suspension of disbelief and realization, that it's more of a nightmare scenario, than a realistic Cold War hypothesis. However, it pulls a perfect switch of tones, presenting a ticking clock and an element of doubt delivering an amazing ending. Perfectly captured 80's LA is complemented by Tangerine Dream's soundtrack.
I loved this movie so much. Can't believe I have only just found it. Small budget, bit of a slow start with the love interest being a bit annoying but then it really kicks off with a tense feeling of suspense and impending doom.
Miracle Mile was a film I debated about picking up for a long time and that time feels wasted as it was easily one of the most interesting films I have seen lately. The film is one of those high concept idea's that served the 80's so well. I best describe these films like the comic book market and you need to let the story be revealed over time. Repo Man comes to mind when I started watching this film and how it escalates over the course of a film. Both films have that high concept thriller style and it's refreshing to see a film that has only grown into such cult gems over time. I picked up the Arrow Films release and the transfer is incredible. I regret not picking it up sooner but I'm also glad that I even picked it up at all. If you're in the market for something that is wild twist on standard storytelling, this will be exactly what you need. 31/03/2021

For the age and the budget, this movie is done really well with decent characters and depth. Once you get past the first 10 mins, the movie goes by really fast. I love the low budget, under staffed attempt at the Armageddon scenes. Kurt fuller at the end is fantastic. Overall one of the better movies on the subject of nuclear war.
Shockingly terrible, but also amazing in its terribleness. Every person in this movie acts so irrationally and over the top, you can't help but be on the edge of your seat as the bizarre turns into the hyperbolic absurd.
Miracle Mile according to me is one of the most underrated movies made in the 80s. Starring Anthony Edwards(Goose from Top Gun) and Mare Winningham the entire film takes place in real time in the course of one night. It starts off like any romantic movie- boy meets girl and promise to meet for date 2 which never happens as suddenly there is a threat of nuclear war and a bomb being dropped. The sense of urgency, surreal atmosphere and fantastic pacing make Miracle Mile a winner and a film that deserves to be seen more than it has. Please see it and spread the word.
