The Monster Squad Reviews

Jan 7, 2025

6/10. 62/100. | Better the 2nd watch. And felt more like one of those movies that feels like a movie. If you know what I mean?

I loved this when I was a kid. It's not quite the same nowadays but it's still entertaining. A great film for kids which thinking about it, is underrated. Better than The Goonies.

I didn't hate it and it was enjoyable. But very forgettable

A fun Halloween tradition soaked in 80s glory.

The memories of my childhood come flooding back when I watch this classic Horror/Comedy.

THE MONSTER SQUAD has many of the classic 80's tropes that make movies from this period so endearing, but rushes through them all in its notably short runtime, giving the whole thing a derivative, Made For 온라인카지노추천 feel. The movie hasn't aged particularly well, either---aside from some quality practical effects, there's heavy reliance on a group of rather mean kids, one of whom is called "Fat Kid" throughout. There are much better 80's movies to watch instead.

Ok I grew up watching this movie and I just recently watched it and it’s really dated. It’s also a very slow movie. The make-up isn’t as good as I remembered. I’d so be down for a remake of this movie!

Monster designs are great. Plot is fine. Some really nice 80's aesthetic, though not much of it was retained in my brain after the film. Fun monster fluff, a little edgy for today though.

Buckle up, monster mavens and spooky aficionados! The Monster Squad, a charmingly frightful blast from the past, has clawed its way through the sands of time to deliver monstrous merriment and ghoulish guffaws. This cult classic has aged like a fine vintage vampire, proving that monsters, no matter how hairy or fang-tastic, can stand the test of time. In the realm of horror comedy, The Monster Squad reigns supreme, capturing the essence of spine-tingling humor and memorable monster moments. It's a frightful flick that deserves a spot in any movie enthusiast's collection, promising monstrous laughs and an enduring legacy that's a cut above the rest.

Where Night of the Creeps was Fred Dekker's celebration of 50s science fiction B-movies mixed with 80s splatter fests, The Monster Squad takes that appreciation but applies it to the Universal monsters of old, sharper than a stake in its genre references and is so much fun it makes you wish you were a kid again. Dekker knows his stuff, making the movie all about mood and atmosphere, complemented by Bruce Broughton's sumptuous score, it balances that classic terror with occasional stomach-churning violence, thanks largely in part to its sharp, witty and childishly crass script, it has everything you could want from a light-hearted 80s horror flick. A real gleeful monster mash boasting a scrappy, ramshackle charm thanks to Tom Woodruff Jr.'s effects team with some superb monster make-up and costume design. The very enjoyable performances from its cast of characters and monsters really help sell the film's endless charm with Duncan Regehr's turn as Count Dracula being especially terrifying. With the right attitude, tone and respect for the characters, The Monster Squad remains just as exciting today as it did back in 1987, more than standing the test of time. It also finally answers the age-old question of whether or not The Wolfman's got nards.

I forgot how fun a movie this was/is and it was my first time seeing Monster Squad in like a gazillion yrs! Since it first hit theatres in like 1987, this is only my 2nd time ever seeing this and I thoroughly enjoyed. Is a top five of all kids movies now based on the fun aspect and right up there with Goonies, Stand By Me, and the Sandlot!

Classic movie that's family friendly.

Cheesy 80s fun. Clipping along at a brisk 82 or so minutes, The Monster Squad marries creatures inspired by Universal's classic monsters with an assortment of kiddos trying to stop the apocalypse. My introduction to this film was on home video where it gained a cult following after an abysmal box office run. I don't recall the movie being marketed well at all, but when I did see it I instantly loved it. The kids were allowed to swear, kill things, and in one case, smoke. Good luck getting that into a film today. Very much a product of its time, but in a charmingly cheesy way. Watching as an adult, some things don't always make sense. Dracula's powers are all over the place, kind of just being whatever the script needed them to be. There even seems to be a shot where he's lingering outside the squad's treehouse in broad daylight... I mean... he'd go poof. Two of the creatures pose no real threat. Frank is housebroken instantly and The Mummy never hurts anyone. But the film is so charming that you just kind of go with it. Would army dudes really respond to a child's letter about monsters? Probably not, but the finale takes place in the same backlot Back to the Future and Gremlins used and for a moment you even get to see the Growing Pains house. 80s-palooza, man. If you're looking for a fun mostly family-friendly Halloween type film (PG-13, and it earned the rating), track this one down. Streaming on Paramount+ as of this writing

Over 35 years old this is classic monster movie meets 'Goonies' Shame it only made $4 million and was overshadowed by 'Lost Boys' It starts with a flashback to 100 years ago in Transylvania when Dracula attempted to conquer everything but his arch rival Van Helsing used an amulet to open a wormhole casting the monsters into limbo It failed and Dracula emigrated to the United States Flash to present day; 4 friends in a small neighborhood are really into monster movies Sean is the leader and his younger sister wants to join Dracula and his monsters are the Wolfman, The Mummy, and Creature from the Black Lagoon Frankenstein is his biggest follower but he ends up befriending Sean's sister and now it's up to the rest of them to stop Dracula's rampage Still a very fun flick having little kids fight off all the classic 1930s monsters; Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the Mummy Great makeup effects by the late Stan Winston Love these child actors and the filmmakers have an adoration of the monster genre, spot-on casting, and whip-smart sense of cool, has enough of a pre-Stranger Things vibe I do like the little girl being active and befriending one of the monsters Quite relatable having these kids as their own geek squad much like comic lovers Moves by fast and wastes no time getting to the good stuff You could label this as a Halloween classic There's so much grown up humor for kids and some plotting that doesn't make sense It's stupid yes but fun covered in the 1980s So happy it gained a cult following managing to get a 2 disc dvd release and the most successful home video release for Lionsgate at the time

This is so stupid but its a fun stupid mindless 90 minutes. There is so many plot holes and lazy character writing along with out of place humor. This is a comedy spoof of the Universal Monsters with a Horror twist and some child friendly elements that form a weird hybrid that I'm not sure who this was made for. Everything fundamentally is just ok because of how stupid and brainless it is. The special effects are good also. Honestly, if your a die hard horror fan or are nostalgic growing up with this I can see someone having fun with this, otherwise its kind of just stupid and not worth writing that much about.

Classic monster film, what’s not to love?

I don't understand why some "critics" gave this movie such poor reviews, especially those who reviewed it in the last 20 years as if it was a new movie, forgetting that it was released 35 years ago, the same year I was born. This movie was a huge part of my childhood, I loved this as a kid and it still gives me a Nostalgia kick today. It's fun, the creature effects are fantastic, especially for the time, and the plot isn't overly complicated and it flows nicely without any of today's horror clichés. Clearly too many "critics" take things way too seriously these days and they need to lighten up. This film is a classic and it's definitely worth watching, especially at Halloween time.

A fun and enjoyable romp that almost feels like it was intended to either have a harder edge or a lighter edge. The film sits in a no man's land much like the audience that it attracted. It's too edgy for the littlest ones and too immature for the older ones. It lacks an audience beyond the nostalgic child that is yearning to feel the careless innocence of childhood. It is at best a fun and silly primer for the preteen crowd as to the classic monster tropes. Enjoyable, however, not a must see…even if Wolfman has nards.

It's like The Goonies meets Stranger Things, a goofball cast of tweens cruising around back neighborhoods looking for monsters, before actually finding some and going on an adventure to take them down. If I had grown up with this movie I would probably really like it, it's got some fun dynamics with its characters and a series of classic monsters reimagined in a unique way - Hammer Studios designs with just enough of an edge to make them seem interesting and threatening. However, while you've got some fun hijinks, creative dialogue, and a fun-filled premise, I think the movie shows some weaknesses when it comes to story, not in the scenes themselves but a rather poorly-explained high-level premise that sees a random cohort of monsters assemble for vaguely expositional reasons. Audiences obviously aren't here for watertight narrative when it comes to a premise like this, but I still found it weirdly difficult to piece together the weird relationships that led to a cast of classic monsters teaming up. I'm probably just being an old grumpy curmudgeon, because the base design of the film is definitely fun and the casting really works even in the smaller roles. I love how they apparently couldn't get the rights to Creature From the Black Lagoon, or maybe thought the name was too long, so he's just 'Gill-man' here. (2.5/5)
