Moonlight Mile Reviews
Its original look at loyalty and loss subsides into a forgettable love story, leading it out of the darkness and straight into schmaltzville.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Dec 30, 2006
With a relentless playlist of rock stand-bys, the film careers between jaunty and maudlin.

Moonlight Mile might be the single most honest film ever made on the subject of grief. Not about death or dying, loss or regret, but about the grieving process itself: the highs, lows, in-betweens and the way all of them wrap, loop and intertwine.

Donnie Brighto is what they should have called this feeble, sucrose emotional drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

In addition to the strong performances, the script is teeming with lovely, knowing moments, and the camera moves artfully.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 10, 2003
An honestly intimate and genuinely funny account of bereavement.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 18, 2003
An awfully good, achingly human picture.

The film isn't very likable.

It's too quirky, too scripted, too ... well, like a movie.

A gem of a movie.

Despite all the expert acting that goes into it, Moonlight Mile finally becomes a militantly soulful exercise. It makes even the most sensitive, tenderhearted viewer feel somehow inadequate. That's not a good feeling.

While it is not autobiographical in the strict sense, it is so obviously heartfelt and personally observed that we feel almost as liberated and relieved as Silberling must have felt as this story came pouring out.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Oct 4, 2002
Rewarding for what it attempts and often achieves.

The first half of Moonlight Mile feels like the runaway trailer for a movie that can't wait to jerk your tears. But to quote Joe in a moment of epiphany, there's a 'truth enema' out there, and, boy, it really brings this movie around.

Moonlight Mile treats grief like a new product on the Home Shopping Network, wrapping it in bright packaging, giving it a snappy catchphrase and offering a special deal that's good only for the next two hours.

Mr. Silberling's vision never makes a seamless transfer to the screen.
| Original Score: C+ | Oct 3, 2002
A funny/sad family melodrama that is neither as funny nor as sad as it wants to be.
Full Review | Original Score: 2.5/4 | Oct 3, 2002
Manipulative and brush-stroked with so much Disney gloss it looks polyurethaned.
