Most Beautiful Island Reviews
I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Not knowing anything about the movie. Wow! do things like this really go on?? OMG Gripping, scary, moving and very compelling acting.
Underrated thriller movie, low budget but very well shot and directed. Keeps you interested the whole time.
Great movie and a hidden gem of a thriller despite its low budget.
One of the hidden golds. I watched this stunning thriller in my room, yet it hit my nerves quickly. The reality and probability of the situation gave me goosebumps. I have seen many horror movies, yet this one gave me the chills. Cuz it is absolutely real. When you enter the thriller, you are as baffled as the main character. A must-watch soul-confiscating movie.
A long slow setup and a final act that finishes just when it feels as though the film is finally getting going. Well acted and it's heart is in the right place but hard work.
take 13 Tzameti (a great film) and put it in a basement with glass coffins and spiders. How this won SXSW is ???. Not a bad film, but a rip off.
Heart pounding and insightful.
An undocumented immigrant in Manhattan attempts to make some quick cash when her friend invites her to get paid to beautify a party. Drawn out as it follows her throughout the day, her multiple jobs, her landlord's threats, and one ice cream shopping trip not to be forgotten we spend more time getting her to the party than there. The anxiety builds throughout, because isn't just about the party so much as the circumstances that make the desperate decisions made there by all the women involved completely understandable. The intimacy of the view of this woman's life is the best part of the film. People going for a straight horror/thriller film (as this was labeled when I watched it) are probably going to be a bit put off, but there is certainly the more mundane type of horror in abundance. Can't say I loved the film (the ending feels a bit out of place and hokey in comparison to the lead-up), but given that this is Ana Asensio's first writer and director credits I have to say I am deeply impressed. This is a director that I'm going to keep an eye out for in the future.
This movie has a long setup and short payoff, but it worked for me. The slow start really lets you live with Luciana. I liked her and cared what her outcome was. I enjoyed way it was shot, it had this naturalistic quality that completely drew me in.
Just an incredible achievement by Ana Asensio, who worked as director, writer, producer, actor and editor. For a first feature film this is just stunning. If you didn't know that coming in, you'd have no idea. "Most Beautiful Island" is taut and memorable. It is minimalist (particularly on score) because it doesn't need flash to build tension and make its impact. [Minor Spoilers] I like the main character a great deal. She's a good person in a near-impossible situation. She must constantly make difficult moral choices to stay afloat and move forward. She's in a city, a culture, that views undocumented immigrants as expendable property. You won't agree with everything she does. She makes mistakes, falls short of her own ideals at times. But when it counts the most, she not only survives, but shows incredible empathy and courage that preserves the life of one who betrayed her. The ambiguous ending has been knocked, but I really like it. Reminiscent of the ending in Spielberg's "Duel," where Dennis Weaver's character escapes his own dance with death and finds the confidence that had always evaded him. He is no longer prisoner to a predestined, sad fate. One gets the same sense with Luciana. Despite the trauma she endures, she effortlessly runs across a dangerous highway and tastes the sweetest dessert of her life. Whatever path she takes, she is now firmly in charge and free of the guilt that crippled her.
Quite a suspenseful film but let down by the sudden ending, I only felt like I'd watched half a film. A movie is only as good as it's ending and it's disappointing when a film that's going well suddenly just runs out of steam and leaves you hanging.
For some people it is a movie , but for invisible population of illegal immigrants , it is reality. If you are female , it is very possible that you will be abused one way or another. It doesn't have to be spider 🕷! There is so much abuse going on in that area, you can make many more movies based on real stories. By watching this movie, I just relived horror I went through very first year of my life in USA.
Surprisingly effective and short run-time helps.
Very Very slow build up for 15 minutes of Arachnophobia Terror. A bit suspenseful in 2nd act. Quite low budget. Lead actress is quite good, she is also the Director of this artsy film. Glad I did not view this in the Cinema. 90 minute running time. If Spiders freak you out DO NOT WATCH!!
A very different kind of suspense movie with some horror themes (but wouldn't call this a horror). The film is engaging and interesting, and hence it holds your attention til the end. The acting isn't great but it's also not an issue.
Anticipation of the climatic scene had a great buildup until your skin is literally tingling. Good commentary on economic disparity.
dull and drawn out. the last 15 minutes were good.
