mother! Reviews

Apr 26, 2025

*some spoilers here!* I only give four stars because the symbolism behind the film is lost if the viewer hasn’t been exposed to specific religious literature. Mother is Mother Nature, Him is God, Man is Adam, Woman is Eve, and the brothers are Cain and Abel. The events that take place wink at certain events in the bible. Mother is in disbelief at Him’s open arms to Man and Man’s companions. I love the modernization of religious literature this movie captures. I just wish it had been more apparent to audiences what was transpiring on the screen.

I hated this film so much. First of all, I was internally screaming the entire movie. It had me crawling in my own skin. I could relate to the main character Jennifer Lawrence so much.. just felt very in tune with that feeling she had most of the film. When there was about 15 minutes left, I couldn't take it anymore, and walked out. The feelings this film gave me were horrible and honestly I walked away feeling kind of unhinged if I'm honest. I love Jennifer Lawrence and although she was a great actress in this, the producers ruined the whole film. Could've really done something with this. Total flop.

*spoilers* The film seems to basically postulate that 'the creator' revels equally in the beauty and love of his creations as in their destructiveness and strife. Because, like them, he is an implicitly duplicitous/dualistic being. Earth is a creation that whom he likes as much and as little as any of them, but whose love for him is uniquely pure. And when his creations terrorize her into murder suicide, only then can she give him something he finds particularly precious. Allowing him to restart the cycle. An interesting idea, but not one that holds up particularly well to evidence-based scrutiny as far as I can tell. Perhaps more than anything else, wittingly or unwittingly, this is a self-portrait of its creator(s). Perhaps even a sort of covert, self-loathing cry for help. The intangibles of this possibility, are where I find its main resonance and value. 3.8/5

I made an account specifically to comment on how trash and an absolute colossal waste of time that this film is. I think it's the single dumbest and no doubt the worst film I have ever seen in my life. There are some thoughts about some message but the execution is so incredibly bad I have no words.

Great movie if you’re a Wiccan or something. But not entertaining to watch at all.

Um filme forte, que muitos não entenderam. Um elenco perfeito. Pfeiffer teve uma grandiosidade em cada cena.

This film really blew me away, it was one of the best and scariest films I've seen in a while. I get how this could've been pretty polarizing for audiences but I think the experimental aspects of this film and the jarring final act are what make this such a unique film. That and it's skillfully done symbolism and phenomenal use of setting. I've never seen anything like this film before, and it's surely quite the experience.

Dull, long, pointless terrible movie with less then no meaning. Didn't make any since or have any flow. Mother nature isn't helpless, was here before us and will be long after. It controls us in every way so....

A Fever Dream That Mistakes Chaos for Brilliance Mother! is a film that desperately wants to be profound, but instead, it spirals into absurdity, testing patience rather than delivering impact. Darren Aronofsky’s allegorical thriller starts off intriguing, with a growing sense of unease and an unsettling atmosphere, but as the madness escalates, it crosses the line from eerie to eye-roll-inducing. Jennifer Lawrence delivers a strong, committed performance, but even she can’t save a film that abandons coherent storytelling in favour of relentless, over-the-top allegory. By the final act, Mother! stops being thought-provoking and just becomes exhausting—piling on escalating madness with no restraint, as if Aronofsky is daring you to keep watching rather than actually engaging you. There’s no denying the film is ambitious, but that doesn’t make it good. Symbolism should enhance a story, not replace it—and here, it feels like a self-indulgent experiment that loses sight of what makes a film compelling. ✔️ Verdict: Mother! mistakes shock for depth, excess for meaning, and chaos for brilliance. A film that could have been unsettlingly effective instead crumbles under its own self-importance. ⭐️⭐️

Sometimes it’s good to know what you are walking into. If you walk into this film as… the portrayal of the relationship of ‘mother’ earth, god and humans. It is a beautifully done movie with other characters you may just recognize and then ahhh ha! Magnificent. I don’t think I would have loved it so, had I not known a bit walking in. Knowing it I was like yes! Nom nom nom. I thought it was intense, amazing and stayed with me. Performances obviously amazing.

I liked this film. I don't think it was trying to be anything other than it was. I felt it was anxiety inducing. I just wanted Jennifer to be able to repair her house but this silly man was in her way at every turn. I thought it wrapped up nicely. I wasn't surprised by the ending. It made sense and the pieces fell where they needed.

This is a wild ride of a movie. Beginning to end. Jennifer Lawrence is absolutely incredible. Amazing cast. Insane direction and cinematography.

This is legitimately the worst movie I've ever seen in my life. Had to turn it off with about 30 minutes left. It was literal torture...if the government ever needs to coerce some information out of somebody, just force them to watch this movie until they spill. Although that would almost certainly violate the Geneva convention. It's that bad.

this is one of those movies, to me at least, that leave your heart hurting and your mouth wide open. many apparently find this movie gross or annoying, and I wonder if they will ever realize that is the point. this movie was made to make you feel. it is SUPPOSED to be gut wrenching. you are MEANT to be annoyed at the guests. you are SUPPOSED to feel anxious and grossed out, that is the entire concept of this movie, and the fact that people cannot wrap their minds around that disturbs me. anyway, I absolutely adored every aspect of this, from the acting to the storytelling to the way every character was perceived. I would 100% recommend this to anyone who wants to feel, because I believe that is one of the main factors of this movie. not only does it use the abstract symbolism behind characters, but every scene makes you feel something very strong. hatred, empathy, and an unbelievably amount of anger and disbelief, and I have a very strong feeling that it was intentional and part of the storytelling. I could go on and on about how strongly I could feel during this movie, but this is a long enough review as it is. anyway, great film, would watch again :))

This movie gave me goosebumps when i understood the core theme behind it… The suffer of our Mother Earth because of us (people) and questions to God, why he let all these horrible things happen to it. The movie has rich symbolism and if you like thinking about life being and everything, you’ll find Mother! worth watching

The writer and director owe me 2 hours of life back. This was the most ridiculous, bizarre, and disgusting movie I've ever watched.

Felt like Shakespere mixed with a Utopian dreamlike nightmare. The longer you think about it, the higher the rating goes.

Literally the worst movie I've ever watched.

The closest thing to a nightmare that I have experienced in a movie. Absurd and suffocating. It reminds me of Kafka’s The Trial.

Well edited and produced, however most people will not understand Darren Arnofsky's weird style of storytelling. I mean come on, if you've seen Requiem For A Dream then you know how weird his movies can get. Mother! was exactly that, weird... You never know what is reality and what is fantasy. Even until the very last scene. I will say this, you won't fall asleep because the movie is just so out there you are constantly trying to figure out what is going on... Only to finish the movie and still not know what the heck just happened or why lol
