Motherless Brooklyn Reviews
Very few films have made me feel like I wanted to turn around and go back into the cinema to watch it again – but this one did. This is a beautiful suspense film that showcases some of amazing acting talents while never losing its unique noir feeling.

It is an interesting idea but doesn't translate well off the page.

Motherless Brooklyn may not be a sterling example of traditional noir, but its subtext is gripping in its own way. The victim of this crime story isn’t a dead man or a damsel in distress, but the spirit of a city.

Motherless Brooklyn is an ambitious undertaking. It's a big-city story that champions the people versus the developers, an important, ongoing subject.

Bobby Cannavale tries to save this movie, but Edward Norton tried to be the Jack of all trades, only to become a master of none. Huge problems of rhythm and tone make this film barely watchable. [Full review in Spanish]

Norton's adaptation could easily lose 15 minutes or so, but this film (only his second directed feature) has a deep bench of talent who deliver, helping to result in a big chewy movie that has a density that you rarely see in screenplays anymore.
| Original Score: 6/10 | Jun 14, 2022
Working in genre can be an excuse to play into and explore clichs, but Nortons limp tropes fail to contribute to a broader vision.

A satisfying exercise in contemporary film noir. But the great mystery to be solved is very convoluted and takes too many unexpected turns. [Full review in Spanish]

Is a beautiful tribute to film noir. Norton's management does an excellent job of respecting the conventions of the tradition that he honors, while at the same time introducing special elements that give his story a unique touch [Full review in Spanish]

Overall, it's a complicated story that unfolds beautifully.

This isn't my usual fare of film, but I do love a good story that manages to be exciting as well as touching without all of that touchy-feely nonsense.

A detective story that gets a little lost in the dark, but when it finds a footing, it's hard not to become intrigued.

This could have been a great film with a more experienced director.

It is a detective film that can be seen, but doesn't escape the conventional. [Full review in Spanish]

If only Edward Norton the producer had told Edward Norton the screenwriter to streamline Edward Norton the star's lines a bit, Edward Norton the director might have had a mini masterpiece on his hands.

Unlike "Chinatown," the hero of "Motherless Brooklyn" is not the strong, silent type like Jack Nicholson. Instead, Lionel grapples withTourette's syndrome.

Norton sacrifices substance for style, and even style for stylishness. So, there's a lot to behold but little to contemplate.
