Mr. Jones Reviews
Though it's a shame that "Mr. Jones" is not more cohesive, the remarkable story of Gareth Jones retains its potency.

A disordered script cobbles this stirring indictment of Stalin's evil from director Agnieszka Holland. There are flashes of epic filmmaking, but the great movie that might have been remains frustratingly out of reach.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 20, 2020
A compelling watch throughout in spite of its rambling feel.

[A] bleak, murky, and instructive film...

There are moments in the blistering cold when Jones's quest for truth looks like it will end. This is where Holland and the script turn the drama up so high that you're riveted to his plight, lost in his agony, shivering in the frosty climate.

At times, Mr. Jones has the gravity and grace to remind us of what an accomplished chronicler of 20th-century horror Agnieszka Holland can be. And at times, it goes off track in ways that sadly undercut both the gravity and the grace.

More than anything, "Mr. Jones" is an argument for witnessing and remembrance.

Norton is a doggedly believable Jones and Sarsgaard's Duranty is suitably slippery and devious.
| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Mar 26, 2020
It's supposed to give Mr Jones some cultural context, but it reeks of desperation.

A subplot about George Orwell is perhaps surplus to requirements, but otherwise the film is a striking, efficient political thriller.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 9, 2020
The film is stodgy in places, but its heart and its eyes are in the right place.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 8, 2020
If Agnieszka Holland's direction is distancing, there's no denying the power of a cautionary scoop that inspired George Orwell's 1945 novella Animal Farm.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 5, 2020
An intrepid crusader against actually fake news, he's very much a hero for our divided moment - you just wish his own biopic stopped fussing and stepped out of his way.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 16, 2019
A tad procedural and even more melodramatic but the urgent power of what we see helps one to ignore the mechanism.
| Original Score: 6 | Feb 13, 2019
Urgent but disjointed.
| Original Score: C | Feb 11, 2019
A fiery epic paying further tribute to this forgotten figure of history, and stoking the coals of remembrance as the forces of authoritarianism are, as they say, back in the news.

The flat denial of an eyewitness account of famine makes one wonder about the Twitterstorm it would provoke in this age.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 11, 2019
Mr Jones is a bold and heartfelt movie with a real Lean-ian sweep.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 11, 2019
Academically staid as the film sometimes feels, the central story packs enough weight, both narratively and emotionally, to make this essential for outlets on the cusp of art-house and quality mainstream.

A far stricter edit of this baggy 140-minute film would solve a number of its problems, but the good news is that "Mr. Jones" gets better and more soul-stirring as it goes along.
