Her Majesty, Mrs. Brown Reviews

Jul 18, 2022

Director John Madden tells the true story of Queen Victoria and her journey to get back up from grief She married Prince Albert, it was one of the happiest marriages in Britain's history Sadly he passed away from typhoid in 1861 and it was a devastating blow to the Queen She became a recluse in her duties hiding away in her palace 2 years later a Scottish servant Mr. Brown arrived having once served Prince Albert to hopefully make her realize it's worth going back to public life and resuming her royal duties It however created a subsequent uproar with the rest of the officials questioning their relationship The public, press, and other politicians think twice about Mr. Brown claiming the Queen isn't in her right mind or fit to be making decisions He risks taking control over the Queen's daily activities, further aggravating the tensions between himself and the Royal Family and servants Bad enough her husband wasn't given the title king since they deemed him of insufficient rank Queen Victoria finally learns though to open up and embrace Mr. Brown's cultural pastimes Sad to say their friendship dissipated over time because of corrupt politics and Brown wrote down all his accounts in his diary that was never recovered Yet Victoria regained her popularity and ruled another 18 years So their bond was beneficial in a way even if it was temporary and tested her ability as a royal This has a downer of an ending for something that started so genuine but history has proven there will always be haters who seem unorthodox particularly of famous people Yes it's not an entirely factual, account of a seldom explored historical relationship but Dench and Connolly act the parts tremendously And you can't deny it's a highly resonant testament to the redemptive power of love--one that transcends traditional romantic definitions

Great historical drama with performances to match its wonderful story.

A brilliant and beautiful time piece with outstanding performances by Judi Dench and Billy Connolly.

This is a very solid period drama. And whether you enjoyed Stephen Frears' Victoria & Abdul or its perfunctory and sentimental approach to its story completely turned you off, this one has a very similar story about Queen Victoria also played by Judi Denchin what could be quite possibly the best role I've seen for her, which does say something. This one handle such story in a rather serious and earnest manner that you couldn't help being engrossed in the goings-on, and it's far more intricate and clever. However, I think it could have been trimmed a tad to step up the deliberate pacing a little and shorten it a bit. I'd also love if more risks had been taken in shooting the film. (8/10)

A movie with excellent acting and enjoyment of a good story of friendship and love without having to have the sexual content many movies today have.

Beautiful film. Bill Connolly was beyond great in this drama. And Dench? What can one say? She can do nothing wrong.

Mrs. Brown is an excellent. It is about the friendship between Queen Victoria and John Brown following the death of her husband. Judi Dench and Billy Connolly give amazing performances. The script is well written. John Madden did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the drama. Mrs. Brown is a must see.

It is year 1863 and Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert dies, she withdraws from public life, so the court appoints a former servant of the prince, John Brown (Billy Connolly), to help her recover from her grief. Brown's unorthodox ways and disdain for protocol draw the queen out of her shell, and he becomes her sole confidant, but their relationship also brings scandal and turmoil. Dame Judi Dench is perfect in that role and she demonstrated a great talent, for which she was nominated for an Oscar.

Beautifully shot, well acted, but the writing was awful! No character development, no narrative, no link between one scene and the next. Difficult to follow, difficult to watch.

Originally commissioned as a production for the BBC television division, Mrs. Brown can't help but feel like a staid television film rather than one made for theatrical distribution. These shortcomings aside, it does have its share of admirable qualities, namely the performances of Dench and Connolly who elevate the proceedings considerably with their sweet portrayal of an unlikely friendship. While it's not the most compelling example of its genre, it's competently made and adequate in conveying the slice of history it focuses on; occasionally that is enough.

An entertaining story of friendship, that can lift the vail of despair.

A bit dry but Judi Dench saves the movie. Had to google and explain why the Royal family made a toast to Queen Victoria by saying, "Victoria Regina" as I had major looks of surprise and laughter on Emma and Lucy's faces. Emma: 9/10. Lucy: 7/10.

How wrong can we be about ourselves.

Stories of England's many queens have been overflowing in the past twenty years, "Mrs. Brown" being one of the first examples, followed shortly by "Elizabeth." Judi Dench is phenomenal, as always, and courts the film as a strong leader, a wailing widow, and a great friend to her manservant, John Brown. While the film alludes to the two having an intense bond, this is not a torrid romantic drama, and very much retains respect for the monarchy. Victoria is a grieving widow throughout, as she was in life, but Billy Connelly's performance as John Brown spices up her life and brings her out of seclusion. The ending would have to be the least enjoyable thing about this film, as it just sort of ends without much explanation, and this beautiful relationship that they've built up throughout the film is abandoned. It feels like there wasn't a point in the film in the first place and upends everything they've alluded to throughout the film. Otherwise it was an understated period piece that told a much underappreciated story with zest and life.

Judi Dench deserved the Oscar for this. The academy made up for its mistake by giving it to her for a 15 minute performance in Shakespeare in Love. This is Judi at her best as Victoria and the awkward and unsure "relationship" that she has post Albert with the Scotsman Brown. Billy Connolly rises to his best as well as the often confused Brown.

Outstanding Dench and Connolly in the real court real life drama about the inspiring but misunderstood friendship of a queen and her faithful, unsinkable servant.

Interesting account of the relationship between Queen Victoria & her Scottish ghillie, John Brown. Excellent performances by Dench, Connolly & Sher. Lovely Highland scenery. Not as emotionally engaging as I had hoped it would be.

One of the finest performances of all time. Dench was 62 when she received an Oscar nomination for playing Queen Victoria. It was the movie that gave her a film career....again......at 62!!

This film was a strong historical well done film. Judi Dench is fabulous as the queen and has great chemistry with Bill Connolly's role. The main thing that's best about this film is the acting. The two leads are so strong and the story is good as well. The costume designer did well as well. This is a total must see film. My grade=91%(A)
