Muppet Treasure Island Reviews

Mar 21, 2025

The cinematic follow up to one of my favourite films of all time, The Muppet Christmas Carol, Muppet Treasure Island was never going to have the same appeal as the previous film, considering I didn’t get round to watching it until well into my 30s. But the franchise has survived for so long because of its inventiveness and wide appeal, and with this being an adaptation of one of the most famous books ever written, it feels like a perfect match. Many have spoken about how Tim Curry is the ideal actor to appear in a movie like this because the man is basically a live action Muppet, and its hard to disagree. He looks like he’s having a whale of a time, and as a result, we do too. The Muppet characters all fit well into their respective rolls, and having the droll duo of Rizzo and Gonzo at the forefront provides some of the films biggest laughs. It doesn’t have a great deal of songs, and as a result its easier to distinguish them, and each are fun and memorable. The story takes quite a few twists and turns towards the end, but it’s never difficult to follow what’s going on. It’s a film that knows it’s audience, what they expect and how to deliver it. Not the finest Muppet outings, but a barrel of laughs nonetheless.

I grew up watching this movie and loved it. I recently rewatched and it was still funny and witty. If you have children please show them this masterpiece!!

Lots of people are talking about the original 6 Muppets movies. For me, the Muppets movies are this one and the Christmas Carol. Currie's performance in this is no less than Caine's in Christmas Carol. The songs are better, and you know it. I love this movie so much, and I always will. Getting a critic to review this film is like getting vegetarian to review a Sunday roast. They are wrong and this film is a must see. There is a podcast called how did this get made, this film will never appear on it because it is fantastic, Muppets forever ( but mainly this film and Christmas Carol).

The story of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel Treasure Island as only the Muppets could tell it. Starring Tim Curry as Long John Silver and Kevin Bishop as Jim Hawkins. Unlike the Muppet Christmas Carol there are a few more major changes to the story to make this a comedy featuring the Muppets. One of the best changes, in my opinion, was making Ms. Piggy the castaway on the island who had a previous relationship with Captain Smollett, played by Kermit. As a musical, the songs are hit and miss. Maybe it was because Tim Curry sang it, but “Professional Pirate” was my favorite. A miss example would be “Cabin Fever”, the song itself is great, but you could take it out of the movie and it wouldn’t be missed. The jokes are also very hit or miss. The key to telling this story is the relationship between Hawkins and Silver. This movie doesn’t deliver on this point as they don’t have enough scenes together to build any believable relationship. Thus, I wouldn’t recommend this movie unless you’re a big Muppet fan. If you want to see a more accurate retelling, check out Disney’s Treasure Island or the animated Treasure Planet.

Curry on absolute fire here as always - really holds the film together - underrated film

As much as it’s great to see muppets in this adaptation, it’s not a well put together movie.

My favorite movie! Witty, heart warming, good music, the actors are great and, as always, so are the Muppets (Gonzo and Rizzo take center stage). Wish I could give it more stars. I would love for the Muppets to make a couple more classic books into movies

It's got the Muppets and the wonderful Tim Curry as Long John Silver, if that doesn't sell it to you then you have no soul. Up there with Christmas Carol as the best of the Muppets in movie form.

Funny and delightful entertaining classic .

Possibly the most underrated film in the Muppets' filmography, Muppet Treasure Island is a fun take on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tale. It boasts memorable puppet designs for the original Muppets created for this movie, the comedic timing is great, the songs are fun, Hans Zimmer composes a great score and, of course, Tim Curry as Long John Silver is the MVP. Everyone hypes up Michael Caine's Scrooge as the best thing since sliced bread but not enough people give Curry credit for how much fun the man seems to be having in the role. And sure enough, he considers this to be his favourite role he's played. Jim Hawkins is likeable enough but, Curry aside, I don't think anybody's watching a Treasure Island film starring the Muppets for the likes of him. Maybe I'm just a weirdo like Gonzo that way, being the heretic who preferred The Great Muppet Caper over The Muppet Movie and this film over The Muppet Christmas Carol but remember, reviews are NOT the gospel. Form your own opinions. And I just thought Muppet Treasure Island was more fun. Maybe it's because of how underrated it is having come out when the franchise's popularity was gradually declining. I have found myself preferring one entry over another in a franchise in the past because of its lower profile and thus not as overexposed and memed to death as the more popular film so maybe it's just because no one gave me a reason to expect to be blown away like with Muppet Christmas Carol. These aren't really sequels anyway so are the comparisons all that fair? Only Muppets Most Wanted was an actual sequel. Though admittedly MTI does take similar cues from MCC including being directed by the son of the late Jim Henson so maybe the comparisons aren't as unwarranted, I think? Still, I had a really good time watching Muppet Treasure Island and would be tempted to recommend it if it didn't mean I'd have to deal with the awkward question from the people I know of why I'm watching a Muppet movie at my age who know I'm unable to pull out the "younger relatives" card and "I lost a bet" wouldn't hold up in court. Yes, The Muppets IP was never really for little children but I do have enough experience to know that bringing them up to certain people is more trouble than its worth. Oh well. P.S. No, I'm not reviewing Muppets From Space. It's poor reputation among Muppet fans and premise that alienated people who identified with Gonzo suggests that it's not worth my time. And anyway, due to rights issues with Sony, it's not on Disney+, not that that stopped me with The Muppets Take Manhattan but MFS and its unflattering abbreviation is a different beast given how it didn't involve the Hensons or Frank Oz. Long story short, I don't want to watch the Muppets dealing with sci-fi shenanigans. It will be spared from my reviewing wrath.

To quote an insane Irishman "laugh!"

The Muppets bring a fun story telling device, excellent puppetry, fun songs, and great humor to a classic tale. It leaves a giant smile on face what a fun time. Gonzo and Rizzo lead a musical adventure that is so much fun. The songs are catchy and memorable it's a blast.

This has to be the weakest Muppet movie for me, by far. I mean, sure it's fun enough to see them perform this classic story, it's still the Muppets of course, but they're just not served best with this material. I will rarely come back to this one.

Pretty much maintained all the elements that made the Muppets special within their spin on the "Treasure Island" story with a notable performance from Tim Curry.

The Muppets' retelling of classic literature into quirky adaptations will always be hilarious even if some are better than others.

Though overall it was an awful entertaining experience, it would have been a lot better if they didn't overuse the word "precious"

All ages admitted; funny, original, & sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tim Curry is the reason to watch Muppet Treasure Island. He chews up the scenery in every scene he's in and savors every bite. It's fun to watch. The rest of the movie is good, but not great. The jokes aren't as witty as they have been in past Muppet productions, and the musical numbers are forgettable. Nevertheless, this is a good way to introduce small children to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic pirate tale.
