Mute Reviews
Mute is yet another sci-fi film that leans heavily on themes of torture and disturbing undertones to compensate for its lack of story and character development. The narrative is incoherent, and the motivations of the characters make little sense. Take Cactus, for example—why would he care about his daughter when he constantly leaves her with sex workers and other questionable individuals? If he’s so concerned for her safety, why does he drag her into dangerous situations? Then kills her mother because she's trying to take her? The scene where Cactus discovers his bestie is a predator is especially ridiculous—he threatens his life one moment, then reassures him the next with, “I’ll never let anything happen to you.” It’s inconsistent, frustrating, and completely unbelievable and gross. Then there’s the main character, whose entire life has been shaped by his mother’s religious beliefs to the point that he can’t even get surgery—yet somehow, he has no problem going on a full-blown killing spree? The film wants to have deep, moral conflicts but abandons logic whenever it’s convenient. Also that injury of his neck getting cut as a child would have killed a small boy in a matter of mins Ultimately, Mute is a disjointed, unpleasant experience that fails to deliver on both story and substance. I couldn’t even bring myself to finish it.
A love story with a twist. Notable for being the only movie (to my knowledge) in which Paul Rudd shows a sinister side alongside his usual comic genius. It may not have been a Hollywood blockbuster but it busted some of my blocks. Definitely worth watching.
With this movie I no longer trust the critic’s score/reviews. I’m so glad I gave this a chance. A 20% rating on this movie feels criminal. This is my first time rating a movie on here. I felt compelled to defend it. Kthxbyeeee
Man, it’s becoming quite the normal thing for me to completely disagree with the reviews on Rotten. This movie was great! It was interesting, well written and didn’t go for the cliched ending. That’s likely the reason why everyone hated it, and I’ll admit I was slightly saddened by it, but it in no way ruined the movie nor would I call the ending bad. Just unexpected. It’s definitely worth watching. I’m really confused by the abysmal score.
I thought it suberbly acted, interesting plot and love story, great scenes, gripping, I liked it, great part for Paul Rudd whacked out psychopath war surgeon.
I loved the character development and near-future elements of this movie. I found myself on the edge as the director slowly revealed those who appeared to be admirable slowly revealed their evil sides. But even when revealed, those evil characters have their own moral codes that place them in conflict. The future setting was so offsetting — as if one were to go asleep in 2000 and wake up in 2010. The protagonist represents the view -- trying to figure out how this world works while seemingly unable to influence events. Same world, but so much had changed without explanation. The love chemistry underpinning the story works with all three characters. The movie is slow-passed, dark, and mostly unforgiving.
A truly original movie not necessarily made for mainstream movie watchers hoping for a simple plot and traditional Hollywood cliches. It's beautifully crafted, nuanced in it's approach to character development and motivation, and every single actor in the film nailed their role. One of the few films I've given 5 stars, but it is certainly worth the watch if you're willing to give it the attention and thought it deserves.
A great movie, seems disconnected and confusing at first but half the fun is figuring things out and not everything being what you expected.
I don't understand these reviews - I thought it was brilliant. I understood what was happening perfectly and thought it was a really refreshing watch
Had fun bits of clever humor, and dark weird dystopian stuff, sets with a Bladerunner vibe. And I kept wanting to love it! But there just keep kind of being nothing to hold onto. The main character was cool. But otherwise it's more like a few plot ideas were just mashed into a script by AI or drunk humans.
Dark. Disturbing. Excellent
"Mute" is a film that left me with mixed feelings. On one hand, the acting in this dystopian world is undeniably impressive, with the cast delivering strong performances. The film's dark and gritty setting is captivating, immersing viewers in its bleak atmosphere. However, the movie's downfall lies in its excessive subplots, which often feel disjointed and overwhelming. The runtime, at times, seems unnecessarily long, testing the patience of the audience. The central plot is decent, albeit overshadowed by the abundance of distracting subplots that dilute its impact. Moreover, the inclusion of a pedophilic character is not only gross but also entirely unnecessary, detracting from the overall viewing experience. It's disappointing to see such a jarring and disturbing element forced into the narrative. In the end, "Mute" had the potential to be a gripping dystopian thriller, but it ultimately loses its way with too many subplots and questionable character choices, making it a mediocre film at best.
This movie is way too underrate, goes to show you can't just rely on ratings to judge how good a film is.
Underrated.. Don't get the hate.
A weird mix of ideas with an Amish lead, a cyberpunk setting and an a-hole of an American trying to get out of organized crime. The sleazy and seedy sex trade underbelly of cyberpunk Berlin is very impressive to look at with plenty of details in the scenes and characters, but the story isn't particularly deep or told well. The lead characters are well acted and their struggles with communication and technology is realized, but the plot didn't really seem to go anywhere. It's pretty dark and messed up at times, especially towards the ending, but overall felt jumbled rather than clear in its vision.
It's a dark and disturbing movie in every sense. There should be some sort of platform for these kind of dark movies that they are only available at certain platforms so people watch only if they chose to watch super dark movies of a deeply disturbed and depressed director. Doesn't worth a star but need to rate it to comment.
Extremely underrated and definitely doesn't deserve this horrible score.
This is an amazing underated film. The dynamics of the cast, and the relevancy of parenting today in a new ( holistic ) non trusting environment sheds light on what can happen to children stuck between faith based healing and actual medical care. But it's also not giving up in times of adversity, and helping those even though you issues of your own. I don't remember the ending, I saw it when it first came out, but those are just based on scenes I remember. Totally going to rewatch again!!! Also as others have mentioned the scope of isolation. Paul Rudd, has an entirely different role than what I am used to, but it shows he his willing to stand up to new roles and not just be typecast. And was as Skarsgard who always gives a stellar performance.
Mute is a subpar mess. There are some good ideas here and there, but the overall result is pretty much abysmal - let me list a few. The main character is bland beyond his traits. Muteness is a terrible condition, and a powerful narrative tool, and this movie does very little to use it in any way that is remotely interesting. The whole film takes place in a sci fi setting. This is almost entirely irrelevant for the whole duration of the story, as it could have taken place entirely in a modern day setting - and they could have had the balls to make a social commentary about our current world - short for one last gimmick at the end that is comically forced. The pacing is all over the place, with scenes that have no bearing in... anything, add nothing, and just pad for more view time, and the actual progression of the plot is just one casual accident after another. There was so much potential in the mix of elements they chose for this movie. Most of it is wasted.
Like watching an overlong sidequest that someone else is playing in Cyberpunk. Bonus points for 'Sean' from Eastenders, a lost hobbit, drag Klaus and evil Antman.
