My Dinner With Hervé Reviews

Oct 18, 2023

Dornan and Dinklage give phenomenal performances in this biopic. This movie has layers of parallelism of fame, acting choices and the human condition not only in Dornan and Dinklage's lives but Hollywood/movies in general. The movie draws you in with the bond between two complete strangers who have more in common then they think. Dornan gives one of his strongest performances ever. He shows depth, humor, and emotional range that is respectable of high praise and oscar noms. Disappointing the academy didnt recognize his powerful performance. Dinklage also deserves recognition for his role capturing the main protagonist. Go watch it!! Highly recommend

This was riveting. I could not stop until it ended. A marvellous take on the nebulous and impermanent nature of fame and idol worship. It was touching and poignant-and wonderfully acted by Peter Dinklage and Jamie Dornan. More so because it is an essentially true story.

While I enjoyed the movie and story it told about the real life of Herve Villechaize, I had a hard time with Dinklage as the main character. Herve was a one of a kind so it would be hard for another actor to portray him, but I do think Peter did a good job.

Very interesting story about Herve Villechaize. I was apprehensive about Peter Dinklage’s portrayal because the two look little alike other than their height, but Dinklage IS Herve. I forgot I was watching an actor which is the highest praise of performance.

Never knew much about Herve, good movie providing more of his backstory.

Really good interesting movie starring Peter dinklage and the guy from fifty shades of grey. This movie is really good and I like Peter dinklages character herve. He's crazy and Peter dinklage is a perfect fit for the role.

One could argue that the film uses common tropes from biopics, but Gervasi does his best telling Hervé's touching life story, which is an inspiring story of success against all odds. The film's early expositional scenes packs even more of an emotional punch knowing Villechaize is ultimately a tragic character. Peter Dinklage is exceptional at playing Villechaize and brings a poignant level of pathos to the role. Hervé was not the most well-known celebrity or significant cultural figure, so the film depends on his inspirational backstory and charisma, both depicted brilliantly by Dinklage. Just as Lord Varys tells Dinklage's character, Tyrion Lannister, in "Game of Thrones", "A very small man can cast a very large shadow."

Despite falling into the frequent mistakes of biographical works (exclusion of details, little detail of the story, etc ...), the film delivers an empathic story, mainly due to the incredible performance of Dinklage.

One of the best movies I've seen in years

A valiant effort by Peter Dinklage. I really just bought into the character as the movie progressed. Jamie Dornan was outstanding. This Sacha Gervasis is one to watch and I can't wait to see what else he's made. Bravo.

Interesting look into the life of Hervé Villechaize. Great acting by Peter Dinklage.

Peter Dinklage did a great job playing the role of Herve, but I was not a fan of the movie all that much. It is a series of his flashbacks and childhood etc... and his decline after his fame. Most of it takes place in a back of a limo with this reporter guy as he tells him his life story, while upsetting the reporter not that great, bit boring.

I gave "My Dinner with Hervà (C)" a five-star rating because of its excellence of the acting. I wouldn't have expected anything less than a stellar performance from Peter Dinklage, as I have yet to see him not deliver in any role he has taken. I was pleasantly surprised, however, with Jamie Dornan's nuanced performance, as I had found his turn as Christian Grey in the "50 Shades" films as uniformly uninspired. Dornan's performance in "My Dinner with Hervà (C)" shows that he has the ability, when given the right material and the right direction.

A biopic of Hervà (C) Villechaize (played by Peter Dinklage) told on the eve of his death in 1993 by suicide. The film follows a young reporter (Jamie Dornan) for a British magazine who is given the Villechaize assignment (in conjunction with a more important interview with Gore Vidal) as penance for erratic behaviour due to alcohol and drugs. When we meet Danny Tate, he's on the wagon and hoping to reunite with his wife and infant son (who left him after a drunken affair). The Vidal interview is his chance to redeem himself but after his dinner with Villechaize takes a bit too long, Vidal walks out. So, Tate returns to Hervà (C) who has promised a great story. Instead, it's the promise of a debauched night in a white limousine and strip clubs in L. A. which is not exactly appreciated. Dinklage plays Villechaize to the hilt but with a great deal of compassion (you can't help but wonder about his own similar experiences). Most of the film is told in flashback as Hervà (C) tells his life story â" with The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) and Fantasy Island (1977-1983) as obvious highlights. I suppose I shouldn't have watched an HBO film on an airplane, given the necessity of sex and nudity (especially in this story). But I gritted it out. As he tells his tale and confronts an ever more disbelieving Tate, Villechaize moves from self-aggrandizement and boasting to self-awareness and acceptance of his own role in his career collapse. This is the same journey that the reporter also needs to take (and as this is based on a real episode in writer/director Sacha Gervasi's life, one wonders whether he also resonated with Hervà (C) as his character does). Dinklage is absorbing here but the film still feels slight somehow â" it takes place over just a day or so â" and too pat. I wish it didn't end with Bittersweet Symphony (however apt). A curiosity although not without real human feeling.

What a mess...I really have nothing more to say but save your time.

A brilliant, interesting thought provoking film. As a child of the seventies I remember Hervï¿ 1/2 1/2 1/2 (C) in fantasy island, what a radically different person Hervï¿ 1/2 1/2 1/2 (C) was to the character he portrayed, if only his agent had known about image rights, he was the best thing about fantasy island, but as a person he was so much more. Watch it, Dinklage and Dornan are excellent, it draws you in completely.

2/25/2019 This is the semi-autobigraphical account of the worldâ(TM)s most popular midget, Hervà (C) Villechaize, leading us through his sad childhood up until his fateful end. I think it would be such a dead giveaway that no one right now could play his part other than Peter Dinklage.

Sad and moving, great performance by Dinklage.

Nov 27, 2018

Dinklage's attempt to mimic Villechaize's accent rendered the sound quality almost not understandable at times. Other than that, it was entertaining
