My Octopus Teacher aims to show a profound connection between humans and nature, but the movie remains a difficult experience for many viewers to access. The story becomes cumbersome due to long, sometimes unnecessary scenes and the already esoteric narrative style. For some, the mixture of documentary and personal experience may be interesting, but for others it seems rather strange and less captivating. Overall, the movie remains too bizarre and not entirely successful.

Gorgeous cinematography oozing with vibrant colors and clear as day lighting. The narrative of the octopus is fascinating, albeit unintentionally awkward at times with its almost romantic framing and wording of the marine biologist’s relationship with the titular octopus (and somewhat manipulative with the protagonist’s over-interpretation of his experience with the octopus). Nevertheless, it’s a beautiful and educational documentary about the wonders of the octopus and its oceanic environment.

I remember the night that I started watching this a year or so ago I was so enthralled that I couldn’t put it down. I had to watch the whole series and it was truly amazing. I knew a lot about the octopus going in mostly the fact that it could be alienthat it’s unlike anything else on this planet, and that there is no evolutionary barrier from this or to this it simply just an amazing creature and I’m really glad I watched this and got to know it more. Thank you.

To this day, this nature documentary is one of few pieces of media that has made me truly sob. I felt embarrassed at first because I found myself thinking “this is just a documentary and no one else is crying!”. I kept asking myself, why am I crying so much? There are actually multiple reasons for this. Though her death was melancholy and felt barren, I couldn’t help but marvel at the beauty, brilliancy, and resilience of nature. This kept bringing me to tears. In addition, the innocence of this relationship with nature was very heartwarming to me. A connection to nature is important and will encourage humans to protect it. Nature is resilient, complex, and will adapt when put under stress but if we as humans were able to connect with it more like our ancestors, there would be more motivation and desire to protect it. Like her short life, it may seem insignificant yet is vital to her ecosystem just like we are. This movie clarified for me, our relationship with the natural world. We must respect the other parts of this life cycle and work alongside the other organisms that live on this planet with us.

This movie is the most blasphemous portrayal of the life of an octopus I have seen in a long time. Craig foster actuvely treats the octopus like a metaphor for his own pain (which he straight up created out of nothing). To start off, Craig Foster tells us that he feels disconnected from his son, then proceeds to spend an entire year away from his son, visiting a damn octopus. The fact that, he mentioned he wants to get closer to his family but spends frickin 25 hours of the day away from his home is actually crazy. Furthermore, he says he's tired of making documentaries, but takes a break from documentaries, to make a documnetary! This guy seems hypocritical as hell!

criticism first, i dont get the logistics of it, which kills the immersion the man is uninspiring and uninspired , it ticked me off he doesnt ask meaningful questions about his level of apathy regarding the animnal, at least he could explain why he took that stance but its completely ignored. the good is that its clearly an emotional ride that will sensitize the viewer as it did the actor. it raises theological questions hopefully and brings a lesson [as it did the actor]

One of the more beautifully filmed documentaries I've ever seen, it's also rich in educational content about life among the kelp forests.

"My Octopus Teacher" dives deep into the mesmerizing world of marine life, and there's no denying the visual spectacle it offers. The underwater scenes are breathtaking, and the octopus itself is a true star of the show, showcasing its incredible adaptability and intelligence. However, the documentary's human element leaves much to be desired. Craig Foster's unwavering fascination with the octopus borders on obsession, and it can be unsettling to watch. His overly sentimental narration and emotional attachment to the cephalopod can come across as forced and, at times, uncomfortable. It feels like he's projecting his own emotions onto the octopus in a way that doesn't always feel healthy or balanced. While the film's underwater cinematography is undeniably captivating, the human element of the documentary left me wanting more objectivity and less of Foster's personal infatuation with his eight-armed companion. Ultimately, "My Octopus Teacher" is a mixed bag of stunning visuals and a somewhat problematic emotional journey.

The winner of the Best Documentary Feature Oscar at the 93rd Academy Awards, My Octopus Teacher is a Netflix Original documentary about South African filmmaker Craig Foster and his many encounters with an octopus over the course of a year. 10 years in the making, the film follows Foster as he finds an octopus and decides to go see it every single day in order to get a better sense of what makes the animal tick. Initially, it is a challenge for him to develop a real trust with the young octopus but he soon manages to befriend it enough that it never runs away from him. During this year-long journey, Foster finds himself not only impressed by the octopus' intelligence and resilience but developing a genuine affection for the sea creature. Some of the most intense moments come during the octopus' cat-and-mouse games with the pyjama sharks roaming the same waters as Foster struggles with his inability to help since it would disrupt nature. There are also more light-hearted sequences where you see him bond with the animal. By the end of all this, the filmmaker talks about his newfound respect for all living creatures and how the octopus' adventures made him look at his own life, his relationship with his son, in a new light. It's easy to see how much effort went into this project: the sheer persistence of tracking a single animal for hundreds of days, capturing good footage daily, is impressive. The filmmaker is visibly passionate about his story throughout so his telling of what he witnessed has real weight to it which fuels the film's emotional punch in its final act. The footage of the octopus itself is, quite simply, gorgeous and single-handedly makes the film worth seeing. You definitely understand why someone would get attached to such an interesting animal. It just makes you want to grab your snorkel and run to the nearest reef to explore. Unfortunately, there's really not much more to this movie than nice images. Foster is a good storyteller but his constant anthropomorphizing of the octopus gets tiresome quick and feels unnecessarily manipulative from a dramatic standpoint. This gives the film an over-sentimental March Of The Penguins vibe that it probably didn't need, clashing with the scientific approach at the film's heart, which gets left behind by the end. My Octopus Teacher is a beautifully shot film and its narrative works very well, you do feel something for the adorable octopus come the last act, but one can't help but feel that this film could have been so much more. It is certainly worth watching and deserving of praise, especially for that fantastic footage, but this remains a bit of a lightweight documentary, though a charming one. Pretty.

Visually stunning, meditatively narrated and sublimely healing , this Oscar winner for Best Documentary chronicles a year-long friendship of nature documentary filmmaker Craig Foster and the titular eight-limbed mollusc whose intelligence and tenacity evoke him to ponder the fragility of life and the kinship with his son.

I admit I found the guy and his narration a bit pretentious at times, but damn, it's a beautiful and interesting story. Octopuses (Octopi?) are fascinating.

The most beautiful and incredible story I have ever seen. A truly inspirational, gentle man, and his astonishing octopus friend. I highly recommend it.

This documentary stole my heart. The cinematography above and below the surface of the water left me in awe and wonderment, and the score led me along without being manipulative or heavy handed. But the story! I've viewed this film several times and each time fall more in love. With the complexity of nature, with the beauty of the environment and the intelligence of the animals, and yes - with the octopus. But most of all with the humility and vulnerability displayed by Craig Foster as he relayed his experience, how it rejuvenated him, and how it influenced his relationships with those closest to him. You don't have to be a nature lover or have a scientific mind to appreciate this film. I highly recommend it to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
