My Spy Reviews
Both a little bit better than I expected and not quite good... Self-awareness doesn't make up for the fact that it's very predictable.

The movie's humor is broad and its twists are obvious, so much so that even a couple of enjoyable performances can't really elevate My Spy into anything unique.

The holes in this forgettable, borderline creepy film are as big as the canyon in Naperville.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Jun 30, 2020
Bautista commits to the dad jokes, and young Chloe Coleman holds her own, but both actors are ultimately wandering through the mists of a movie that isn't fully there.

"My Spy's" got the goods. Pinky promise.
| Original Score: B | Jun 27, 2020
One can't help but think the story would have worked so much better as a drama, or some kind of "Man on Fire" actioner, with Coleman's chops and Bautista's brooding presence.

If you're stuck at home with some bored, smart-alecky kids of your own, this'll put a smile on everyone's faces, at least for a little while.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jun 26, 2020
Coleman is a gifted performer who knows how to deliver lines that are too grown-up for her age without sounding precocious; her scenes with Bautista have some real warmth.

Overall, if you're looking for a way to spend a lazy afternoon with your older kids, you won't regret it streaming "My Spy," but you might not find it memorable either.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 25, 2020
"My Spy" meanders, uncertain of its audience: It has too much violence and language for family viewing, but doesn't commit enough to the danger of spy thrillers to stir the Bond and Bourne lovers among us.

Peter Segal's film is pulled in so many different directions that it comes to feel slack.
| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Jun 25, 2020
Surprise! "My Spy" is fun.
| Jun 24, 2020
It knows exactly what it wants to be and how to get there, and is made more engaging than it probably has any right to be thanks to the oversized charisma of its oversized star.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jun 24, 2020
Now hitting the Kindergarten Cop milestone in his young career as an actor, Dave Bautista pits his muscle mass and stoicism against dimples and lunch money in Peter Segal's My Spy.
| Jun 24, 2020
Segal... generates an amiable atmosphere in domestic scenes and gets solid performances from a cast that's given some good and some not-so-good material to work with.

Not terrible, perfectly "meh." It's not good, but it's not terrible either.

The script, written by Jon and Erich Hoeber, is nonsense, but it's the best darned nonsense it can be.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 19, 2020
You don't have to see it now. Because there's little else to recommend this workaday revamp of the Kindergarten Cop formula, where a tough he-man is undone by some kiddies while solving a crime.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 16, 2020
Bautista is amiable company, although he seems bemused at having to take dodgeballs to the face this early in his movie career, and perhaps by the mixed messaging.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Mar 12, 2020
This big-spy-meets-little-kid comedy isn't funny enough for teens, but not really suitable for younger viewers either.
