Mystery, Alaska Reviews

Mar 28, 2025

"Um, waiter? There, uh, heh-heh 🤓 seems to be a distinct lack of hockey in my hockey movie." Seriously, I get that the best sports movies out there aren't **really** about the sport at the center of everything, but — man — I feel like this was 60% down-home gossip, 30% blue humor and like 10% hockey. Also, just look at the billing block and tell me what you're expecting as a filmgoer. Russell Crowe, Burt Reynolds and Hank Azaria, directed by Jay Roach. I mean, if you squint, you can kind of see what they were going for. Part "Slap Shot," part "Miracle." Maybe you could say this movie walked (limped?) so that "Goon" could run? OrmMaybe I'm just being too polite. It sucks because there's nothing offensively bad about this. Everybody does an okay job performance-wise. For me, it honestly just comes down to there being too much homespun drama and not enough of what the poster promised.

WHY WHY WHY must we add pornographic sequences to fun family movies? If I wanted to watch sex, I wouldn't buy a Russell Crowe movie. Couldn't finish it, and threw it away. Too bad, thought it was a fun idea. Back to The Sound of Music and Kung Fu Panda. Blah.

Great fun. Awesome family movie. And perfect for those that like a good underdog story. Similar to Remember the Titans but less serious and with more comedy. Great characters that you fall in love with, a great story, great writing and you get a real community feel. An old school movie that will always be one of my silent favourites.

It's a great movie would have been much better and done better if it actually was a true story though whatever you do don't believe the critics ever who give them the right to be a critic nobody that's why they're always wrong and nobody ever agrees with them and the viewer reviews are never the same as the critic reviews the viewers are the ones you should quote the viewers are the ones you should post on reviews not critics all critics and moderators should be removed from society yeah I know what I just said and I mean it they're useless but it's a good movie don't believe the critics again

I read the other reviews and they keep calling this a hockey movie. I never saw it as a hockey movie. Hockey was just an elemen in a story of community. I love this movie, but if I thought I was going to watch a hockey movie, I would hate it. That's not what it is or intended to be in my mind. It's got interesting characters, it moves along quickly, and has a satisfying ending. It's a feel-good movie. I like feel good movies when they're done well as this one is.

Your typical rousing, dig-deep sportsball movie. Featuring the usual cartoon characters so you can keep them all separate in your mind. Mystery is a small town in Alaska that gets to play hockey with the NY rangers. Hilarity ensues. They will have to dig deep and bury grudges (I guess). The scenery and casting puts this a notch above the typical sportsball movie.

Best hockey movie right ? 3.7

It's a fairly fun film about community, but for a hockey film, it is sorely lacking in hockey action... As such, it just ends up being pretty run of the mill.

I agree with the critics.

The story is fun even if the hockey is weak.

This hockey movie was pretty good. Russell Crowe, Burt Reynolds, and the rest of the cast did an excellent job in this movie. The plot to the movie was full of humor and drama. It was a great story about a hockey town team going up an NHL powerhouse. It's like a David vs Goliath story, which makes it great. Hockey fan or not, people will enjoy this movie. Check it out.

I saw this movie one and a half times on cable. Liked it the first time, Crowe and Reynolds, what could go wrong? Pleasant movie, entertaining although a tad sophomoric, not to mention manipulating. Second time, wasn't compelled to finish it. Unlike other movies I watch again, the novelty of this one quickly wore off. I suddenly realized Crowe seemed to be strangely similar to Ben Wade in 3:10. Burt seemed to be too smug and formal for his own good. Skank had become the kind of guy I love to hate. Then I wondered what these other village people did for a living to be able to pay for Crowe's, Burt's and the mayor's salaries and benefits. If it was an isolated village, what other hockey teams did they play? And where were all the other women and girlfriends of the hockey players? Was this a primarily a gay team? I know, I know. It's only a movie.

Goes between being very self aware of how ridiculous it is, to fully serious; can't really decide if it wants to be a spoof or sincere. It isn't that funny. The hockey isn't that entertaining. I still wanted to see how it ended though.

The best inspiring sports movie ever made!

Strengths: There's just something about sports movies that work for me. Watching a band of teammates come together for the big game is just cool. Here, the cast of misfits are hockey players who reside in the tiny town of Mystery, Alaska. Russell Crowe (John Biebe) plays the team's leader, a veteran of the town's weekly game. He seems like the perfect actor for the grizzled role, especially when you watch his scenes as the sheriff. Burt Reynolds (Walter Burns) has a commanding presence and is a highlight in almost every scene he's involved him. Hank Azaria (Charles Danner) also does well in his role. The action on the ice is great and well shot. The big game against the Rangers is dramatic without falling victim to some of the overused tropes in sports movies. It does have one of the better inspirational mid-game speeches, though. Multiple characters get moments that come into play during the big final game, like Tree (Kevin Durand) toughening up or Birdie (Scott Grimes) needing to be more of a team player. There's also a great sense of comedy sprinkled in throughout the film. Weaknesses: While the hockey scenes are fantastic, they're few and far between. I understand having to build character in the non-sports scenes, but there were far too few. It led to a few boring lulls in the movie. Several characters have plotlines that kind of don't do much. For example, Mayor Scott R. Pitcher (Colm Melany) finds out that his wife Mary Jane (Lolita Davidovich) is sleeping with the team's notorious playboy, Skank (Ron Eldard) and though it gets resolved, you could've chucked it and missed nothing. Too much of things like that bog this down. Mike Myers (Donnie Shulzhoffer) gets a cameo that's supposed to be funny, but isn't at all. Overall: It's a personal favorite sports movie of mine, but it's not without flaws. I like a good chunk of the characters, the sports scenes are fantastic, and the setting is great. With more of the stuff that worked replacing the parts that didn't, the movie would rank higher.
