Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase Reviews
A surprisingly entertaining effort from all involved.

This screen incarnation of America's favorite teenaged detective gives us permission to celebrate a world where the only superpowers anyone needs are intelligence, curiosity, compassion and kindness.

[Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase ] is a film that will be empowering to young girls and boys as it is a reminder that adventure and mystery await...
| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Jul 3, 2019
The kind of movie I want my kids to see, presenting young people who are smart and resourceful and good-hearted instead of self-entitled punks living in a world without consequences.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 26, 2019
Sophia Lillis is an absolute delight as the new Nancy -- a far cry from the insufferable pill portrayed by Emma Roberts in 2007's awful Nancy Drew -- and it's a shame she most likely won't be allowed to return to the role.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Apr 16, 2019
I really didn't like this movie. I thought it was really poorly written and poorly made
| Original Score: 3/10 | Apr 7, 2019
Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase is a pleasing return to the kind of storytelling captured in those books, in which a mystery is tidily solved through logic and cleverness.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 23, 2019
Lillis shines as the brainy detective, but the movie itself is none too bright.
| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Mar 21, 2019
This is innocuous, pop entertainment and, taken on those grounds, it does the job just fine.
| Original Score: 7/10 | Mar 18, 2019
Ineffectual, irrelevant and amateurishly conceived from start to finish, this movie is so bad it could kill off Nancy Drew forever.
| Original Score: 1/4 | Mar 18, 2019
There's care with messages and relationships, delivering PG-rated entertainment directly to those who will appreciate it the most.
| Original Score: B | Mar 18, 2019
The film is entertaining and engaging enough to earn a recommendation for its target audience of young girls. (Full Content Review for Parents - Scary Scenes, etc. - also Available)

[T]his character comes across as an anachronism. Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase could have played that as a joke, but smartly, it doesn't.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Mar 15, 2019
Lillis is ideally cast as Nancy, often cheerfully undercutting some of her character's more precocious proclamations, cracking smiles and reminding us that she's still a kid.
| Mar 15, 2019
[Lillis is] the freshest thing to happen to Nancy Drew in decades, making it clear that casting was the solution that has so often eluded this series in its jump from page to screen in the past.
| Mar 15, 2019
As for the mystery of how good the movie is, the case is closed on a positive note.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Mar 14, 2019
Sparkling book adaptation has great characters, some scares.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 14, 2019
For a franchise that has been so prolific and so popular over the decades, one might expect more screen adaptations. This new version points to a possible reason why: The stories are rather thin.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Mar 14, 2019
While most of the acting here is unexceptional and the direction/editing often reflects odd choices,... the movie's intended demographic of adolescent and teenage girls will likely not care.
| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Mar 13, 2019
Nancy Drew has always been a role model for young girls and Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase only reinforces that wholesome image.
