National Velvet Reviews

Feb 14, 2025

A "plucky underdog makes good" talesthat launched Miss Taylor's budding career, aided by the always serviceable Mickey R.

Taylor is perfection. Rooney and the others add to the joy of movie-making at its best. No comparison to the goop being served up these days- these are actual people even though the story borders on a fairy-tale.

Classic movie with cuteness from a young Elizabeth Taylor. A story of moral character mixed with the wonderment of little kid's dreams coming true. I love this movie, a must see.

National Velvet is a pleasant film for horse lovers, sports lovers, and fans of Mickey Rooney and Elizabeth Taylor. The film has a wonderful musical score that is emotional and pleasant for audiences. National Velvet is a tearjerker that everyone can enjoy.

Fits very neatly into the "teenage girl with a horse" movie archetype, which some will love and others will find incredibly predictable. It's colorful and full of sentiment and good feelings, virtually no character has a shred of any vice in them apart from an exceptionally traditional sense of Christian home authority and financial practicality. Basically a Capra knockoff but with horses, where the idealistic kid ends up coming out on top after some sort of minor opposition with external forces, perservering through pluck, care, and dedication. Helped along by both Rooney and a young Taylor, if you're looking for a simple and wholesome classic YA storyline, you should be satisfied, but not surprised. (2.5/5)

Absolutely nothing interesting or memorable going on.

Amazing to think this was produced during the war and would have been great light relief at the time. A young Rooney and Taylor are excellent child actors. It's a film of its time that manages to be twee, including a luscious colour palate, without straying into being sickly twee. A charming film and really enjoyable.

This isn't one of Elizabeth Taylors best performances, but I think this movie is still a wholesome MGM classic. I thought it was a little longer than necessary, but the ending was great as it reflected the beginning of the movie with Mi Taylor walking away on the dirt road.

As a horse enthusiast this movie will not disappoint. It is quaint full of rich characters that are unique and endearing. One of my very favorite movies of all time.

This movie is one of MGM's unforgettable classics with actors and actresses that look 70 years younger.

I really like National Velvet and can't wait to get on my friend's grandma's horse again.

Our 4-year-old loved it, so did we. The parents are so sweet and hilarious. (On a side note, the accents are such a mess thats it's hilarious--it's supposed to take place in England, but most characters just sound American or have a 2% British accent--then there is Taylor with that crazy Hepburn/Grant/FDR Mid-Atlantic/Hollywood accent. But it doesn't make the film any less enjoyable, exciting, or affecting.)

Love this movie, especially the ending

One of the great classic horse movies--along with The Black Stallion, My Friend Flicka, Seabiscuit, Thunderhead, Hidalgo, and Secretariat. This film is a great family film as well, like other great films of this era--Lassie Come Home and Greyfriars" Bobbie, Watching this movie is a treat I enjoy over and over again. One of my all time favorites.

Wow - cannot believe Elizabeth Taylor looks so young. Pretty good story - love the father in this film for his comedy relief. The twins were not fans, perhaps the story was a bit too slow...

What does it feel like to be in love with a horse? A girl and a boy grow up together, the boy in love with the girl and the girl in love with horses. When the horse she loves the most is threatened to be lost, she asks her parents to allow her to enter the horse in a national race. The boy reluctantly agrees to train the horse and they may find hope for the horse and love in the process. "Would you expect them to be both forgiving and generous?" Clarence Brown, director of The Yearling, Anna Karenina, Intruder in the Dust, When in Rome, Plymouth Adventure, To Please a Lady, and The Rains Came, delivers National Velvet. The storyline for this picture is straightforward but not overly creative. The characters are fun and the acting is solid. The cast includes Elizabeth Taylor, Mickey Rooney, Donald Crisp, Angela Lansbury, Anne Revere, and Reginald Owen. "All jockeys are the same size." I recently came across this on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and decided to DVR it since it starred a young Elizabeth Taylor. This was fun to watch unfold, but nothing special overall. I wouldn't go too out of my way to see this unless you are a diehard fan of the classics. "Greatness is only the seizing of opportunity." Grade: C

I wonder why they no longer make such movies. This story had everything, humour, cast, dialogues, emotions, and above all simplicity. Truly, how faith can overcome anything! Now I know why Elizabeth Taylor was so famous. Mrs. Brown character is wonderful, if I've to remember this movie for anything, that would be her dialogues and learnings. Quite deep and old age wisdom. I thought I am a learned person, but she taught be many things. Mi Brown eventually goes, because until we leave there is no coming back! (as he says). The dialogues of the whole movie are quotable, didn't find the same with other movies. The photography is wonderful, Ireland is beautiful and the movie portrays the beauty well. "The Pie" made me start loving horses, may be one day I own one... I'll remember this movie for long..
