Native Son Reviews
Movie about a killer with a fancy title. Protagonist is a selfcentered idiot who cares about no one but himself and his monologues are just … make you eyeroll forever.
Such a strong first half that falls completely apart, especially once the climax arrived, I genuinely thought "but...why?"
Native Son by Richard Wright is one of my favorite books. This film is not that book. It is a modernization with a different ending. Bigger is a Native Son. He is the product of systemic racism in America.
I've been underwhelmed by Ashton Sanders in the past, but he did a great job in this indie film. Unfortunately the plot takes a bombastic turn after the halfway mark, and to me, ruins a strong first half.
Coolest jacket ever. Ashton Sanders was my favorite "3rd" of Moonlight. But the film had a completely different tone from the book (which I discuss here) because of the deviation from the book's setting — modern day vs. 1930s — especially during the final act. The film's Bigger is more likable, which is the problem.
Native Son is a good example of a worthy film, but one that sadly never gains true momentum. Based on the classic 1930s novel by Richard Wright the film is updated to modern times. Set in Chicago it deals with a young man named Bigger Thomas. Bigger is a free thinker and has a strong voice, but is also a little lost. When a job comes up to drive for a wealthy white family he takes it earn some much needed cash. The film has important things to say about race and class but it runs out of steam in the second half. Especially when events turn hairy they just seem rather improbable. Ashton Sanders is great though in the lead role. Worth a watch but it's a film that could have been so much more.
A tense vision into the life of BIG, a young black man on the verge of self-awakening in Chicago. Will taking a driver job with the Dalton family, an affluent white clan living an Old World existence in a super privileged white enclave studded with mansions? Yes. And he fears he's becoming a House Boy shoveling coal in the heater located in the dungeon-like basement. We have access to BIG's interior world through VO and this adds great dimension to this sleeper of a film. However, the tension ratcheted up by the killing seems forced and I guessed the ending almost immediately. Overall though a fine flick and worthy of your viewing.
Despite a promising start, this movie falls flat on its face half way through. This movie would’ve been 10x’s better if it was to take place in the 1930’s like in the original novel. Bringing it to present day was a reach.
Not having read the novel personally I can't speak to the novel to film translation. The film portrays the best and worst in people while sprinkling in bits of our biggest issues we share as a society. Very powerful
I hope the source material tells a better more nuanced story because this was just weak and pointless. It seemed like they were trying to set up a thing where Bigger Thomas was a victim of his blackness on some level. It would be a pretty standard and legit way to go. But all I saw was a dipshit who did a series of really stupid disastrous things - when he had other, better, really obvious choices every step of the way. I have no sympathy. A lot of the action didn't ring true, I didn't like the voiceover work. 3.4 out of 10
I love Richard Wright so if you read the book, you will know that this movie is nothing short of an utter disappointment. The original story and time is not the appropriate tone for this generation. The fact they made the movie in present time as opposed to the past (like in the book) was a disappointment in itself. Great meaning, great book, poorly executed film.
Distracting mannerism choices by the lead, a clunky plot and a script loaded with cliches make this film harder to watch than it was already supposed to be.
I felt the movie was great. The cinematography, the music, editing, acting was top-notch. Very disturbing, but meaningful messages. Just know its different from the book...
This movie went from hopeful, interesting into a very dark turn. if you saw the trailer and thought you figured it all out then you are wrong. you could be in the character's shoes..What would you do ?
