Wow, I’m not even a big sports fan but this movie was amazing. Highly recommend.

A very emotional movie but not true to the book. Completely different. Should have been a different title. Still a very good movie on its own.

The best baseball movie ever made IMO. Some outstanding individual performances by actors: Robert Redford, Wilford Brimley, Robert Duvall, and Kim Basinger just to name a few. Even a young Michael Madsen nailed his part. Some extra nostalgia for me personally, as it was mostly filmed in my hometown of Buffalo, NY. I coached a game or two at All-High Stadium, which was used to replicated Chicago/Wrigley and then of course War Memorial Stadium, aka The Old Rockpile; was where the Bills got their start and later in the late 80s I got to see the AAA Bisons play there. The music, the perfect slo-motion when he cracks that last homer and breaks the lights.... still get chills watching!

Exceptional and moving.

Almost impossible for a baseball fan not to love this film. Even a non-baseball fan will enjoy the story and acting. Watch the movie 50 times and the last few minutes will still leave most with goosebumps.

Iconic; one of the best sports films ever made and a signature role for Robert Redford!

Adapted from Bernard Malamud's novel of the same name which is in turn based on the shooting incident and subsequent comeback of Philadelphia Phillies player Eddie Waitkus and borrowing story elements from the quest of the Holy Grail of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, Barry Levinson reworks the source material about a baseball talent and his odds against him to be a legend with absorbing mysticism and lyricism of a fable.

Like all the greatest "sports" movies, this one isn't about the sport. It's about trying, and overcoming, and not letting past failure keep you from success. More than anything, this one is about remembering who you are and becoming that person at any cost. My favorite sports movie, and my favorite Robert Redford film.

One of the best sports movies of all time

i enjoyed it BUT Robert Redford isn't a great actor in this-just BLAH....

Absolute tosh. There's about a dozen stories here, but not one of them is told properly. It's such a mess. Also, why isn't it called The Supernatural when that is the only thing that would make the movie make any sense? Hobbs has a magic bat from a magic tree that summons thunderstorms like Thor's hammer. There's also a supervillain, a femme fatale, a nosy reporter trying to uncover his secret identity... It should actually be called Batman. It's more like a superhero flick than anything else. But, a crap one. And someone tries to kill him with a silver bullet. Funniest funny moment, of which there are many, is when at the end of a sequence of ball-fumbling ineptitude that ought to be soundtracked by Yakety Sax, Michael Madsen sprints, Wile E. Coyote-style, through the outfield wall and we immediately cut to his funeral ashes being scattered from a biplane.

This movie made me dream of becoming a major league baseball player. My poor hand-eye coordination and distaste for running in the heat killed that dream. The acting is top notch and the score is timeless. I try to rewatch every year to get excited for the season.

Despite hyperbole and its departure from the novel, an excellent composition on film.

Still one of my favorite movies. It is still good after all these years. It's kind of a super hero movie in some regards but grounded in reality. Just a fun sports movie with a great theme song.

It's an all-american movie with baseball, redford, close and basinger. It's a "it's never too late" kind of tale. It's family friendly. Only problem for me was that it was a little slow and sleepy.

Good movie but extremely confusing at times...

Great cinematography. Excellent ensemble of actors. Sports drama is not my cup of tea, so I was bored and slept a bit, but this was a soothing type. Kinda blunt. Given released in mid 80s, I think this not that look old.

This is an easy watch - a little slow going but you don't need to concentrate to follow the main plot. This certainly isn't one to watch if your sceptical, least of all if you don't believe in semi miraculous things happening, as seems to be the case early-ish on in the film. I felt it was a little bland and not so engrossing a watch mid way through but the main character, Roy Hobbs, is likeable enough, I suppose. I definitely felt some of what happened seemed a little too good to be true but its ok as, I suppose, a sports related kind of a feel good film of sorts. Its a family friendly watch - a relatively cheesy one but one regardless. This, of course, is unlikely to appeal to people who don't have any interest in baseball I suppose - I can't say I'm a big fan of it per se, I was more curious about the main character and what may be behind his apparent great talent that seems to be discovered from nowhere but I did ocassionally zone out a bit, when technical aspects of the game were referenced. This is a decent, ok film but no more than that. The fact that not all questions are answered was a bit frustrating too. I'd recommend it if your a fan of Robert Redford and this films plot interests you and/or if you enjoyed 'Field of Dreams' or 'A League Of Their Own', otherwise perhaps not.

Classic Sports Drama. Filled with really good Acting, An Amazing Soundtrack, And good Editing & very good Cinematography. The only 2 problems with this film occur with during key parts of the film it goes over the top dramatically and it ends up hurting key moments. I understand why this was done to drive home the emphasis of how Baseball Players during the Golden Era were legends and these types of events is how folklore was built as this film is the ultimate love letter to Baseball but in those moments it is a double edged sword. Finally the pacing does suffer a bit in the middle of the movie, it feel there is about 10 minutes that could have been cut and nothing would be lost. Still really good though. It can feel like stuff just happens a little bit and trying to tie in all the subplots. Betting against him, his health, the love triangle, the team's performance, etc. Besides those marginal issues that hold this back from being An All Time Great Movie, this is a Classic Sports Drama, A Classic 80's Film & arguably besides The Sundance Kid, Robert Redford's Most Beloved Character. Wilford Brimley is amazing in this as Pop also.
