Nebraska Reviews
It’s the father-son relationship and the deep layers that Alexander Payne explores that is moving and sure to pull out some emotion. The black and white aesthetic is also appropriate here.

There are an assortment of memorable faces which add so much character and detail to the setting and the story itself.

However thoughtful its existential investigation may be, Payne’s film also delivers plenty of quiet laughs at the expense of its characters.

If one looks past Nebraska's supposedly "plain" packaging, they'll find a compelling character-driven crusade dripping with depth that is delicately delivered through both Bob Morgan's script & two powerful lead performances from Will Forte & Bruce Dern.

“Nebraska” is easy on the eyes and soul. It’s a redemptive and often humorous tale that shows it’s never too late to heal a fractured family.

"Nebraska" is about the non-Hero's Journey; life lived terminally inside the village compound, with no aspirations to anything other than a bit of comfort. It's possible to make an exciting movie about unexciting lives, but Nebraska is not that movie.
| Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 5, 2022
Nebraska is rare in its sensitivity to the plight of a neglected and suffering population.

A plain spoken but lyrical black-and-white film about a man grasping at a last chance for a legacy.
| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Feb 1, 2021
Dern delivers a fine performance (a considerable distance away from ruthlessly killing John Wayne).
| Original Score: 7/10 | Dec 3, 2020
Alexander Payne has crafted a film that doesn't feel like a film.
| Original Score: 3.5/4.0 | Sep 18, 2020
Despite its shortcomings, Nebraska offers much to grant it a strong recommendation, mainly for Payne's largely mature and unflinching look at the dusty underside of the American Dream.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 21, 2019
The plot of this is really simple yet believable, making it easy to care about the situation - all of which is made better by the subtle performances of its cast.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Nov 21, 2019
Nebraska is Payne's fourth consecutive "reflections on an average white male life while on the road" film.
| Original Score: B- | Aug 27, 2019
It droops in the middle and veers off into sticky sentimentality by its third act, but Nebraska is still able to retain a solid charm.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 8, 2019
Nebraska is a bleak view of contemporary America but also a loving one.
| Original Score: 5/5 | Jun 7, 2019
I went into Nebraska, hopeful but cautious. But in this film [Alexander] Payne seems to be going not sideways, but backwards.

An authentic pathos is extracted with great skill from in between the constant jabbing notation of gesture and attitude and manners; which is to say that Payne seems a true comic artist of the oldest and most deadly serious kind.

A deeply personal, emotionally resonant and -- let's not forget -- richly entertaining road movie with several award-worthy performances.
| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 6, 2019
Nebraska is a slow-burning heart-warmer that neatly dodges the cornball bullet of a climactic manly hug.

Squibb's performance is the perfect way to sum up the film: This movie could easily have been overly sentimental, but instead has a refreshing amount of honesty that makes it memorable.
