The Next Karate Kid Reviews
So childish and bad movie..
Landing with a hard thud, The Next Karate Kid may have a young star in Hilary Swank but is without a single ounce of narrative or spiritual authenticity.
Not good, and not so subtle at all. Pat Morita is still wonderful, but the rest of the actors seemed uninterested (except for Michael Ironside)
The Next Karate Kid... well, let’s just say, I’m glad Mr. Miyagi is back because that’s about the only thing that felt familiar. From the start, you can just tell this one’s made by different hands — the heart and charm of the original are nowhere to be found. It’s more teenage drama than karate, and by the time the story actually kicks in (which takes half the film), you’re already wondering why Daniel-san isn’t here to balance things out. The whole thing feels like a rehash, but without the emotional depth or compelling writing that made the earlier films special. It’s not terrible, just... not a Karate Kid movie. Having Miyagi back alone doesn’t make it one. Now that I’ve officially watched the entire franchise, I’m ready to dive into Cobra Kai — hopefully, it brings back that magic. Fingers crossed!
This movie gets undue hate and it's because of the negativity that I avoided it for so long despite being a fan of the franchise. Parts are actually quite charming, for example the scenes with the monks, which add a touch of whimsy. Swank's training scenes likewise pretty stirring. The pay-off fight at the end is a bit meh but overall the film neither tarnishes nor elevates the Karate Kid legacy. I suspect being the first film without Ralph Macchio or even simply having a female lead might have contributed unfairly to its negative perception.
Rewatched this recently, and it stand as a stark reminder of how bad Hillary Swank really is
Say what you will but this isn't as bad as the reviews say. Hilary and Pat carry this movie and make it enjoyable enough to not turn off. Tim Treakle
Predictable and formulaic in the face of the greatness that was the original Karate Kid trilogy. Definitely a shame to end Mr. Miyagi's story this way.
I watched all of the Karate kid movies to rewatch Cobra Kai and try to understand everything. This one was the worst by a lot. This one is completely unnecessary and not Hilary Swank's best performance. The bad guys don't even use karate and the movie gets a little creepy. So many questions too... Like who is this colonel guy and why is he beating up students multiple times? Why is Hilary Swank so angry and unlikeable in this film when she definitely has better performances? Why do the colonel's cronies all act super creepy? Why does Hilary Swank's caretaker just leave her with Mr. Miyagi? Why did Pat Morita agree to this movie like did he have a bad divorce or something? Do not watch. The only redeemable characters are the monks.
This movie was TERRIBLE. NEVER WATCH THIS!
What if a movie focused on Mr. Miyagi and his backstory was produced instead of this one?
... do I need to say It? It's just afawl
Disappointment with Part III made them throw their hands up in the air and plainly do a gender-swapped soft reboot. Hilary Swank does her finest impression of a quarrelsome tomboy with a heart of gold and a soft side. Along with Pat Morita, who reprises his iconic role with all the enthusiasm of a straight-to-VHS sequel he could master. The dialogue is obscenely exposition-ridden; it immediately betrays the fact that Robert Mark Kamen was nowhere near the script. As it happens, the whole overtone of the movie's antagonists is misguided. These aren't Cobra Kai bullies. When Terry Silver was doing his thing, it was tongue-in-cheek and clearly dialed to the giddier side. Here we have things like rape insinuations and car bombings, all with a straight face. Meanwhile, look at these jolly monks going bowling using chi powers or something like that. Leastwise, the movie doesn't try to pretend that this "private security company" is somehow a bane on Julie's existence for Miyagi to overcome. It is more about anger issues. Not only that, thankfully, they didn't try to squeeze in some kind of idiotic reason for the karate tournament, where one move would win the thing.
NO tiene bueno la historia no es interesante el humor es malo y la protagonista es super molesta y el anciano es aburrido no me gusta lo peor película de karate kid es un 0.6 de 10
Es la peor película de karate kid y es ahhh y decisión es una película horrible
It is not a good movie but it not horrible Julie is likeable and the charcter a funny however everything is is straight up one big dumped mess. With a bad villian and a messy story this movie has failed to be a Karate Kid 4 we deserved.
I watched it when it came on 온라인카지노추천 as a young teen. It was the first of its kind, as far as I am aware, with a female lead, a young woman. She is strong and kind, she says what she thinks, she's smart, she can fight, protect herself, she refuses to obey the bullies. She acts as who she is. As a young woman it made a huge impression on me, I must have watched it ten times on VHS. The scenes in the Monastery have always stayed with me. Also the scenes with the hawk, and the love interest. School appears as a necessity, not the be-all and end-all that it felt to me at the time, she learns most outside of it. The moment when she comes back changed and hopeful after two weeks was very relatable. I watched Hillary Swank's career after this movie, she is an amazing actress. I love that at least one of the Karate kids' movies is with a young woman. Rewatching it now, with a 30 years distance and as an adult with children, I can see how it affected me. There is still a bit of a gender polarisation, girl/boy thing, going on (turned on its head at the end), a need to be pretty for the main character (which isn't far fetched as a teen) and the martial art group is/seems over the top in terms of power and feeling of emergency. Colonel Dugan's power and issues are not realistic to me, was it more back then? Still it makes for an intense conflict and a wonderful moment when his team realises they cannot trust and follow him anymore. I'm really sorry for the car.
No Wonder this killed the franchise for 16 years. The acting isn't very good but its weighed down to just flat out bad because of the terrible dialogue. Hilary Swank is TERRIBLE in this, it is amazing she went on to become a respected actor. The villains are horrifically stupid and no one has any chemistry except Miyagi who is passable. The cinematography actually has good camera angles and framing throughout most of the run time until the very end. The problem is so many scenes are pointless, stupid, or just terribly acted and isn't very good overall. The music is boring and forgettable as well. The editing and pacing are terrible. General rule of thumb here is the longer it goes the worse it gets. The final 15 minutes it just flat out goes off the rails and is hilariously awful. So many dumb and pointless scenes are littered throughout and even if you strip those out what your left with is a watered down version of the first movie basically. The hawk subplot, the monks dancing, monk bowling, the bad guys crashing the prom on ropes from the ceiling, the mortal combat that looks like it takes place in the same city as the Crow, and a crap ton more. The runtime could be cut down easily by 20-30 minutes. It doesn't do anything new besides change gender. Stay away from this no matter what.
It nearly works thanks to Hilary Swank's solid performance and some good story ideas but the script and the ending in a fight instead of a match really hurts it.
