Night Moves Reviews

Jan 4, 2025

A film that becomes increasingly ominous with the use of action-based sequences and a tragically underwritten script, which is a shame for the excellent actors whose characters and relationships fail to generate a compelling journey for an audience to become immersed in.

Very much in the slow paced style, with no peaks, of Reichahrdt's films

I like stories by Elmore Leonard, which chronicle bottom feeders racing even further to the bottom. His stories are funny, in a grim sort of way. This movie is not based on an Elmore Leonard story, but it could have been. The characters amount to mentally challenged Oregon environmentalists who blunder their way through blowing up a dam and then spend the rest of the movie being confused about why a lot of water suddenly came through and caused damage downstream. They ponder deep philosophical questions, such as, "Who knew there was so much water behind a dam?" and "Why did all the water come out when the dam blew up?" They especially dwell on the delicate ethics of, "Are we responsible even a little tiny bit for all the damage that was caused when we blew up the dam?" They perform all this pondering while taking themselves very, very seriously. If you changed the story about 5% you could make a dark comedy from the same raw material: Wayne's World meets River Wild. "Whoa, dude, our explosion changed the concrete into water. I hope our canoe can make it down these rapids. What a trippy explosion! Party on, Wayne! Party on, Garth!" If Elmore Leanord had written the script, at least this movie would have been funny. This version was just self-important, pretentious, and amounts to a public service announcement about the dangers of spending too much time in the woods smoking too much weed.

It's a shame that a little after the half-way point the film becomes more straightforward, because before that it's a fascinating thriller. Reichardt constructed a lean narrative that seems to indicate that the planning and execution of this act of terrorism is less an outgrowth of any specific ideology the character's hold, but rather a desperate attempt to find something to believe in. It's a great concept that is hampered by a messy final act.

The movie begins with a plot that looks promising. Not! Scene after scene drags out like the camera crew went for lunch with the result that the whole movie drags. One keeps hoping for something exciting to happen, but . . . nothing. And it ends with nothing . . . like the whole movie crew grew tired of the venture and closed it down with no real ending. Don't waste 10 minutes on this poor excuse for movie making.

A very subtle and environment-centric story that becomes quite tension-filled in the final act.

Night Moves is the second Kelly Reichardt movie I have seen; the first one is Wendy and Lucy. I highly enjoyed watching this independent movie. The entire story is about three environmentalists who join together to blow up a hydroelectric dam in protest of excessive waste of natural resources. The story is a no-frills character study about those who believe their actions will resonate loudly with a grand message only to doubt they even made a whimper.

Nice thriller, well-acted and well-directed.

I came to this film after watching First Cow. While I didn't love First Cow, it did perk my interest in Kelly Reichardt's other work. As I began watching I came to realize that I watched this movie years ago but only remembered small tidbits. After a full rewatch, I think I can safely say that while Reichardt's style is not one I love, it's tough to dismiss. Her intention to exhaust the atmosphere is a bit irritating and I think her films would be significantly better if she trimmed their fat to a great degree. Night Moves is no exception, but does deliver slow and ambient tension with quite a payoff.

This made me never want to watch movies again. Second half of movie presented itself as if it would become a deep, dark, clever story -- but never amounted to anything except a total waste if time. Dull extended shots and zero payoff in the end. Ugh.

Drains you in, never lets you out

Though a bit too slow and lacking the action sometimes, the movie manages to grab viewer's attention by a classical crime and punishment theme, meticulously depicting the hell of somebody punishing themselves for a crime bitter than the society would have done.

Poorly pathetic attempt at entertainment. Wondered why I had never heard of this movie, quickly realized why upon watching it. It sucks and appears to somehow glorify anti American behavior.

When I read that a movie is listed as a "thriller" that is what I expect to witness. Instead, this movie seems to draaaaag on. I love the fact that the movie sheds light on how destructive humans are to the earth but if the person watching the movie turn it off before they get the point, nothing is learned!

To be candid, I am not a professional movie critic but I did get a solid B- in my Movie Appreciation class at the local junior college. With that said, I found Night Moves to be a sprawling meandering melodrama that does little to satisfy. The setup is incomplete, the confrontation lacks punch and there is no apparent resolution. Viewers are left with proverbial WTF just happened? All in all, I think Mr. Lemieux, my Movie Appreciation teacher would have given this movie two thumbs down and one "burned crepe".

At first this movie seemed promising, but after the first half of the movie it severely declined. The ending was quite disappointing and lackluster.

There were a few things that didn't seem to make sense with this movie. It made me question why it happened out loud. However, that's a very minor gripe. At the same time it has a great suspenseful quality to it, especially if you have some of these activist's ideals. The ending was somewhat satisfying and a bit different. Great theme and i'm curious about the writers and directors now.

Waste of time - dull ending.

I'm inclined to agree with the naysayers on this one. It felt like it should go somewhere but it kind of just stays slow the whole way through with a mild sense of paranoia about it. I'm personally not a fan of movies that make you fill in the blanks with whatever you decide happens. Someone else said it has no end, and they're right. Totally just ends and leaves you asking yourself a bunch of questions that you can't answer and likely no longer care to try to answer. Watch this only when everything else you wanted to see on netflix has been seen.
