Night Raiders Reviews
Despite its plot holes and at times underwhelming story, Night Raiders is still interesting to watch, and its message about preserving traditions and heritage is very interesting.
I am surprised by the large number of lukewarm reviews here on Rotten Tomatoes. This film is a absolute gem, and I can understand why Waititi was willing to Exec produce it. Yes, it is slow-paced at times, but this is a forgivable matter. The film's poignant messages about past, future, and present redeem it. For anyone who has spent any time interacting with indigenous US and Canadian folks, from this non-indigienous person who has done so, it seems to mesh well with my understanding of indigenous culture.
Incredible movie and amazing actors.
Very slow, overrated, the ending is terrible, basically an entire waste of time. And i am usually very lenient on movie critique
This made what I felt was a fatal flaw by introducing a duo first and then splitting them up early on. Other films have done it, but if it is done with a known actor it's not seen as a duo. That issue aside, it starts with solid world building, average acting, but proceeds to make a couple unnecessary stops along the way and introduces a whole lotta characters we don’t need to know at the time they are introduced. All of that could have been cut in favor of more rising action being added later on. The ending is completely ridiculous.
Starts off promising, but gets more and more lame.
I’ve never left a review before. The movie was such a massive disappointment that I just went online to vent, and to see if others had put into words the anger I was feeling to waste 90 minutes of my life. I almost stopped 1/2 way through from boredom, but was invested and thought maybe the ending would be good, or cause anything to make sense. The opposite happened; it was infuriatingly stupid and lazy. Spoiler: the movie decides to be sci-fi in the final seconds and the girl can control drones with her mind. You know, because Native Americans talk to birds. Uhg.
Mostly underwhelming and slow.
Good performances from a sea of mainly little known faces, for the genre it was a creditable contribution and some novel angles on what might largely seen as a parable of what happens when cultures collide. Kept us engaged for the length of the movie, with the suggestion of possibly a sequel. Wouldn't mind seeing what else this cast can do, or how the story develops beyond parable. Needs to take the novel angle past the inevitable reaction of authority (described in a somewhat lazy shorthand here...) to really satisfy a future audience, though...
The interesting indigenous storyline is not enough to recommend this so-so post-apocalyptic movie. Dumb ending by the way.
Overall, following a similar vibe to titles such as The Hunger Games or Maze Runner, Night Raiders successfully delivers a creative sci-fi thriller on a small budget. I love the world created on-screen, and aspects such as costuming and weapons are also pleasing. However, while I appreciate multiple areas, the film is sadly unmemorable and fails to deliver an impacting experience. Characters are well created, but performances sometimes feel a little lifeless. The finale is disappointing considering the investment and build-up, and the conclusion ultimately feels extremely vague and unclear.
Dull as dishwater with wooden acting. Don't waste your time
I liked it. It has a twist to the familiar story about staying alive and safe in a new world order.
An interesting premise but does not delivers what it promises... the Cree people plot deserved better, it had its moments tho...
As a concept, the plot travels a well worn sci-fi path. That said, the execution was exceptional with superb performances by literally every actor. I would love to know more detail behind the authoritative party as this film really portrays them in a one dimensional, fascist cliché. Overall, the cast has a lot of heart and the spirit of the film dances with sci-fi.
The filming comes across as very amateurish.
Profound in it's simplicity, this incredible film uses fiction (that is far too close to fact) to tell a story of the land, of power, of freedom, and of liberation. Creative and beautiful, I can only hope more people discover this gem.
A mixed bag, 'Night Raiders' has moments, but the plot and characters are undeveloped and there are long stretches with no dialogue. Set well into the future, but with the looks of present day, the world given to the viewer has nothing to do with the statement the film is making. Danis Goulet's first feature is riddled with cliches, which I would be willing to forgive, if the third act wasn't from another movie. The first act hooked me but Goulet will struggle holding your attention. The movie is way too heavy handed trying to tell you how white people have treated Native people. Also we're in North America and people CLEARLY have Kiwi accents. Do better!! Final Score: 5/10
I don’t know exactly what it was that didn’t click, but it just didn’t 2.4
