Night Watch Reviews
Brilliant fusion of multiple genres. Must watch in Russian with English subtitles as the English dub is an embarrassment to all voice talent. It must be paired with the sequel: Day Watch. The twink-themed vampire hollywood production hijacked the title of the third movie: Twilight Watch. Production was abandoned.
Excellent story of good vs evil. The dubbing was obvious, but the voice actors are good.
Not bad for an rather un-heard of early 2000 movie.
Not very interesting.
I was half-expecting low-budget theatrics, stilted acting & non-inventive plot but I just wanted to see what Russian horror/fantasy -- INSTEAD -- I found a well-done, well acted, supremely well-done special effects, tight acting, oodles of action, creepy-wild plot and now I ready for part 2 "Day Watch" of the Trilogy. This movie did so well in Russia and then globally that part 2 will be done with more moolah in the USA. I just hope, as happened with "The Highlander" series, that this trilogy doesn't go sour after its superb first movie. I heartily recommend this to sci-fi, horror, fantasy, adventure-action and even thriller drama fans. DVD is two-sided to allow Widescreen w/ English language to be seen or the original.
The movie has a quirky direction, some continuity errors, plot holes...But you'll ignore all that in favor of an amazing atmosphere, good acting and a nice setting .
With unique style, interesting characters, and a fresh enough spin on vampire lore, it's not difficult to be surprised and captivated by this. While the backstory and reasoning for what is happening is somewhat thin, there's enough of everything else to keep ones attention until the acceptable ending.
Kind of convoluted, yet "Night Watch" is an excellent film in the genre of supernatural, good v evil, kind of like "Constantine". In this film the set up is Russia in the early 2000's. To briefly summarize with out giving anything away: there are Others that are light for good (the night watch) and dark for evil (day watch). They are in a truce in their ongoing battle for world dominance. The hooey-ness comes in with evil ones being primarily vampires, though its alluded to as them having other powers. Likewise, good ones having various skill as well. Enter Anton who is fighting for good, in a sort of drunken, stupor like manner. Yes, the plot is rather complicated, but the acting, the set-up and the pacing are well done. Really needs to be seen in conjunction with the sequel/companion movie "Day Watch".
An incredible fantasy epic being told from another cultural view, not just because we are all used to american way of story telling should this be dismissed as something incoherent. The new concepts used in the fantasy genre are a welcome addition and this movie asks you not to see it with your usual eyes but with different and new perspectives. It's way underated just because we are so accustomed to the standards...
A great introduction to modern Russian films and the series. Night Watch is a fantasy-action film that does well in creating its own world. The directing and screenplay was fun and gritty. There was little fluff and the action kept the plot going. A bit of cheap CGI, but it was made over 14 years ago. 4.5/5. A solid must-watch.
I went into night watch with very high hopes. I was expecting an intense and gripping movie that would blow me away. What i got was quite different. The movie has good visuals. Every good visuals. I was quite impressed by them. However, I was not impressed by the rest of the movie. It was confusing, and half the time I was wondering what was going on. The acting was good, but nothing amazing. All in all, this movie is for anyone wanting a movie with a few cheap thrills here and there, but I wouldn't recommend watching it.
Ambitious piece of Russian cinema. The fact that the German release versions were literally cut in half transformed the plot into something more convuluted than it had to be. Still respecting the intention behind it.
Original take on the vampyre saga, which might have been better with smoother editing or maybe more footage.
Good movie. The plot does get pretty muddled at multiple points in the film, but it's saved thanks to some very stylish direction from Bekmambetov, very solid visual effects and good performances from its cast.
Night Watch is at times funny and other times terrifying, and often campy. It has a few too many subplots that aren't given enough love, and somehow everything illogically gets wrapped up neatly after the Void is closed (I guess through the power of Christ?). The CGI is uneven, at times breathtaking, and other times dubious. The premise is fun, and the movie is enjoyable overall.
This Russian sci fi supernatural flick isn't bad with some interesting special effects. I saw Day Watch first and didn't like it as well--it didn't make sense without seeing this first part. Now it makes a lot more sense, and I have to change my view on the other film. However, the special effects were much better in this part than Day Watch.
