Nine Reviews
Great entertainment. Spectacular dance routines. A lot to like
Atrocious! The material that this film is based on (the legendary film maker Fellini’s masterpiece “8 1/2” and the Broadway musical adaptation of that film) is practically flawless. Yet somehow the director of this travesty has decided to throw away more than half of the score of the show, turn the main character from a complex artist on the verge of a creative breakdown/break through into a one note egocentric chauvinist, and most sacrilegiously he and the screenwriter have made a film about film making as cinematically inert as a Liftetime Channel movie of the week. The genius of Fellini’s original was that he found a new and unique cinematic language for a semi autobiographical film about an artist who couldn’t find anything new or unique to say. The Broadway musical “Nine”, operating without the obvious advantages of a camera, still focuses heavily on the artistic process and retains much of the dream like quality of the film and much of its irony ( and features one of the most beautiful scores of any musical). But somehow Rob Marshal has decided that he would excise most of what came before and make an extended music video, a la M온라인카지노추천. This worked for his other foray into film musicals, “Chicago” — a show about the shallowness of American society and its worship of celebrity. For that his style was a perfect fit! Unfortunately it doesn’t work here, for the true heart of “8 1/2” and “Nine” is man’s search for his soul through art, something this film has none of. Wasted cast, wasted opportunity.
Half-baked and void of any real emotion or depth, NINE isn't a bad movie, but it's not that good either.
Fantastic! NINE is an audacious, sexy, sleek feast of a movie. Dances beyond the limits of what a musical can be. The story of Guido Contini's life and legacy is so inviting, and each female cast member grabs their chance to shine and steals the show. Everything is stylish and beautiful throughout the film, leading up to a semi-tragic ending and a surreal closing scene that will leave you deep in thought. One to watch again and again. Musical cinema at its very best!
I just adore this movie.. sick of all the negative Nancy and moaning Myrtles.. also these women are the best actress singers I have ever heard, I do realise fergie is an actual musician so wasn't talking about her.. but her song is great
I love DDL. I've seen everything he's ever done. This movie disappointed me almost as much as his retirement.
Rob Marshall's musical follow-up to his award-winning "Chicago" furthers re-enforced his sensationally dazzling knack for adapting faithfully the theatrical production value by the grasped sense, through an intriguing story under full circle and electrifying performances when radiating raw emotions. However, the impact seemingly continued his previous cinematic flaw of focusing on the main dazzlements over fulfilling nuances, particularly lesser chemistries, and elliptical seductions. (B)
While not as good as it's inspirations but it's a decent watch
it is a special movie. Not only showing the role women play in a man's life, but also depicting the falling of a man, the loss of success, the sunset of a journey of glamour. I really enjoyed it and felt his agony and how he knocked every door and tried everything he used to do before to get back on track, yet failed and learnt he has to change things to re-ignite himself. I loved the music ,the shows and songs specially (I Can't Make This Movie). Too bad it is not popular, I guess one day people will appreciate how beautiful and different this masterpiece is.
Some parts were good. Some of the songs and performances were very good. But the movie was asking too much of us by expecting us to sympathize with the main character who serially cheats. Tonally they should have done something different.
The cast is great and talented (even if I personally don't like Lewis as an actor). The film is over produced and downright boring.
Daniel Day-Lewis A Mediocre Film I believe this juxtaposition is the only theatrical element that Rob Marshall has successfully managed to transfer from the stage to the silver screen. (5/10)
hold on to me, mama.. Nine A bold risk to create a character driven feature in a musical genre and although the makers fails to pull it off as anticipated the hard work that went behind it is surely visible and plausible. As all Rob Marshall's feature consists, it too scores majestically on all musical numbers; from production design to art design and from choreography to all the beats. And the performance objective is relied upon Daniel Day Lewis who carries it off easily with the help of a great supporting cast like Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard and Judi Dench. Nine is easily adequate up till the musical genre is considered but as soon as the vision gets wide, it fails on craft due to a loosely placed script.
Not very coherent or interesting. The music was repetitive and not all that memorable. Maybe watch it... just dont expect much
Thankfully, I'm not the only one who finds this so-called "excellent dance musical movie" a dull, stupid and not interesting entertainment.
For the longest time Rob Marshall's work has been synomous with musical's. Chicago, Caberet, Into the Woods and even this 2009 musical, Nine. Marshall brings together several of hollywoods sexiest and most talented actresses. Marion Cottilard, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Fergie, Kate Hudson, Sophia Loren, Judi dench along with one of the best method actors in the world Daniel Day Lewis make up this deep character film set in the beautiful city in Italy. Although not perfect the film still served up to be a decent flick in the filmography of the Oscar nominee. Guido Contini is an Italian film director who's life is unfulfilled and without purpose, at least he thinks so. As he prepares to embark on his next film project he finds him self dealing with the complex relationships in his life. Some of these relationships are with his wife, his agent, his mistress, his muse and his mother. The story wasn't well structured and needed more work. There was more musical showcases than actual movie storytelling. Although they were fantastic and oozed erotica too many of those can usually confuse people and make it hard to keep up with whats going on. I will say that it was at least a 3 out 5 star film meaning that is still a enjoyable flick to watch Penelope cruz's performance was very good and filled with vibrancy. Her singing was most impressive as was all the girls. Marion cottilard was also very good here. she played a key role here in the story and especially for guido's psyche. This was without a doubt the sexiest I've ever seen from all of these actresses's. Daniel day lewis was sensational here! to be able to pull off an Italian accent and sing in that very accent requires incredible talent and dedication! this is one of his more tame roles but he still put in the work to fully place himself in an Italian filmmakers shoes Great art direction and costuming it has a under rated emphases on fashion here and everyone looked good in there outfits. Finally Nine had some impressive cinematography with decent editing. If you are at least a fan of any of these actors in the film I'd say its still worth checking out.
Grade - C- It's by no means a complete disaster, but 'Nine' is rather disappointing. Its got moments of greatness and some fantastic performances, and I feel like there's a good movie in there somewhere. However, it's undeniably slow at points and many of the musical numbers don't work, leaving me slightly perplexed and disappointed.
