Polanski revisits Satan with less than devilish fun.

The script is so bereft of real surprises that it's best to keep the lid on what few there are.

It's so disappointing for the director of Rosemary's Baby to have to stoop to something as desperate as pyrotechnics and nudity.

The filmmaker takes you on a journey that goes absolutely nowhere.

On a scene-by-scene basis, it sometimes entertains, but never amounts to anything.

Elegant, scary fun.

It overstays its welcome by 20 minutes or so, just long enough for us to begin to feel a little silly for having so much fun.

About as scary as a sock-puppet re-enactment of The Blair Witch Project, and not nearly as funny.

Polanski's sly sense of film-noir conventions pokes fun at the genre while at the same time honoring it.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Jan 1, 2000
It drags, it clunks, it leaves you stuck between a guffaw and a groan.

The self-immolating and oblivion-bound Ninth Gate is the kind of film that's going to give satanic cults a bad name.

Sexy, sardonic and slightly over the top, it definitely contains Polanski's best work in years.

Early on I thought I could almost smell the sharp must of the leather bindings ... but that scent was just the aroma of middle-brow, art-house Euro-rot, a whiff of decay and hauteur.
| Original Score: D+ | Jan 1, 2000
The film never gets around to illuminating much about the lead character.

The worst occult film to star big-name actors in many years, and a startlingly inept and unsatisfying piece of storytelling.

I kept hoping Polanski would take the plot by the neck and shake life into it, but no.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Jan 1, 2000
Compulsively watchable.
