The Ninth Gate Reviews
Entertaining enough, worth a watch
Underrated occult movie- a great watch. This will probably never be anyone’s favorite film, but it’s entertaining enough from start to finish.
Great and awesome occult movie. It’s close to being one of the very best Occult films ever made. After watching the movie several times I got the book that it was based on, Club Dumas, and this is one of the very rare moments that the film is better than the book. The book is still very, very good, but only the parts that deal with the satanic book are really interesting and deep and profound, the other parts that go off into this Three Musketeers world and just get you bored basically. If you didn’t like this movie then unfortunately you just do not have a high intellect and cannot appreciate it. I don’t mean to insult but it’s just true. It should have a 90+ percentage rating on rotten tomatoes but this is why Marvel movies are completely dominating the theaters now. That’s what people want, sadly.
This movie went over my head the first time watching. But after viewing it again and again I find it to be more clever than most films. You might hear it doesn't have payoffs but that's because the payoffs are subtle, making them more impactful not less. Very likely most the plot and meanings went over most the reviewers heads. It's actually a very cool, smart and engaging film in many ways. One of my favorite elements of it is its mysterious nature. It treats the audience as smart puzzle solvers not as simple minded viewers that need everything spelled out. The more you pay attention the more string there are to pull at. Even now after multiple viewings I still find new elements I missed. Sorta the gift that keeps on giving. The film carries style and substance in unique ways. There's even a nice touch of humor and levity in it making it a very enjoyable watch. The performances are cool yet understated, and the music is too. I strongly recommend this film to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.
Excellent plot build up to nothing. Great acting but a horrible ending with no defined resolvement of the story. Simply left hanging with no clue as to what was going on and no explanation as to what the events in the movie meant.
A simply delightful movie with great production values, excellent script, plot and acting. A successful marriage of Drama, Suspense and the Supernatural. This is one of the extremely rare movies that I watch at least once a year. You should at least consider watching this movie at least once. You will not be disappointed.
I beg to differ with the masses, however I found the story line absolutely riveting and intriguing. Kept my on the edge of my seat until the end.
An amazing master peace.
This film is definitely underrated and worth watching. While the pacing is slow, the intriguing lore makes it compelling. It’s engaging enough to spark curiosity about the occult and leaves you wondering where the director drew their inspiration.
I really enjoyed this film and felt like I was watching something special. Each scene has interesting characters, as the mystery and plot unfolds. It's a very atmospheric mystery drama centered on the occult. It's a slow burn compared to typical Hollywood films because it's more European in taste. It feels like a novel. The music really sets a gothic suspenseful tone. The ending is lackluster, but I get the sense that at a more than 2-hour runtime, they were rushing to wrap it up. International audiences enjoyed this more than American ones, which isn't surprising. There isn't enough action and explosions to hold most American movie goers' attention spans.
I had a good time with it! Acting is spot on, by absolutley everybody! It is dense and atmospheric! And it made me appreciate the craftsmanship of bookbinding!
There is something very unique about this movie... the atmosphere, the pacing, the dialogues and the way people talk softly... It feels like it is one of its kind, that you cant really find occult movie like this one.
Definitely one of the movies ever made.
Underappreciated masterpiece.
25th Anniversary this year, and I still love this movie. It creates such an amazing atmosphere. And Dean Corso is such a fabulously unreliable narrator. For those still confused—Boris Balkan is the one doing the murders and Corso is well aware of the game he is playing and the end goals. And he's trying to win. The movie just doesn't hand you that. You have to live in it to get it. I've watched this movie so many times over the years, and it still captures my imagination every time. An absolute masterpiece of noir fiction.
Watched it many Times, guess I got a thing for this kind of Storys, AND I think all Polanski Movies are great, can not really decide witch one is my Favorite...this one for sure has what it takes to tell a funny wicked satanic Story. And the Music fits perfect...
Credo. Que lixo foi esse? Coloquei muita fé no começo. Mas que filme desgraçadinho.
I enjoyed this movie and liked the supernatural element. If you haven't seen it before I'd recommend it.
This film is so bad that I have specifically joined Rotten Tomatoes with the sole intention of warning others not to waste their hard earned leisure time watching it. Terrible on every level. Johnny Depp's beautiful face can't save it. The final nail in the coffin is the soundtrack, which is beyond hackneyed and genuinely could have been half lifted from Pink Panther and the Bond franchise in its lack of subtlety. Avoid at all costs.
Magickal and esoteric flick from Polanski, embracing an odd book dealer, who sets his foot into the occult and satanic sphere. Weird things occur to happen throughout the movie, yet to be taken too seriously and the level of seriousity is actually floating through the movie, one just have to jump on board an embrace it. Its both thrilling and chilling, yet also sniffing onto elements which strikes near real lodges. The story is not bullet-proof, but has a great originality and idea. It also goes a long way, in a helpful manner, to be a little interested in the occult, but be able to embrace this masterpiece for what it is. Not to mention, how extremely good the soundtrack also is, bone-chilling and a real atmosphere generator.
