Notes on a Scandal Reviews
Characters are really in depth with a lot of layers, nobody is cookie cutter or black & white, kind of hard to root for anyone because everyone is wrong in their own way, but man sometimes you really feel bad for both of the main characters even though they're both kind of in the wrong. A movie that shows you good people can do bad things or be tricked into making mistakes.
A wickedly fun slice of camp that Dench seems to relish—though you can’t help but wish she’d lean even further into the darkness.
Stunning performances from the two leads, thrilling story with layers revealed throughout. Fantastic drama/thriller. Based on a great novel of course. Well worth a watch.
This Movie was an uncomfortable watch for sure- still was incredible to see two of the industry titans work together in Blanchett and Dench- a masterclass to watch even if the topic and writing was rough
Top class performance by Judi Dench. Also a stellar performance by Cate Blanchett, and a strong nod to Bill Nighy as well. Strong movie throughout, and one I would recommend but won't be rushing to re-watch. I value this movie for the performance of the actors rather than the story itself.
The critics consensus has it right on this movie. Powerful work by Blanchett and Dench. Compellingly told.
You think that Blanchett is the teacher with some major issues. But as the story goes on, it's Dench that rises as the greatest sicko. Fresh script and idea helps grip you into this one.
This was such an engaging movie with great acting and storyline also including some very intense drama. Judi Dench was superb as usual but Cate Blanchett was exceptional. It's definitely worth the watch.
A brilliant and powerful drama, that is led by the fantastic performances of Dench & Blanchett. One of 2006's best movies.
Notes on a Scandal is pretty unlike anything I've seen before. It shows some of the uglier sides of people that come out of the feeling of disparity. Desperate for love, attention, to be young, to feel pretty. The immensely clouded judgment (to put it lightly) of the leads (Blanchett and Dench) is like watching an amazing storm that you see in the distance and when it eventually rolls in, you get exactly what you knew was coming. Their motivations couldn't be more different, but each are despicable in their own ways and use each other for their own means. This movie is a delectably tense and cruel affair.
Not watched in time, and it's truly brilliant! Such strong writing, aligned with superb performances - especially Dame Judi. Both elements make this a tense, and dramatic film… I'd forgotten just how much so
A good movie. Human interplay, and what it leads to.
Wonderful acting, encapsulating story. Blanchett is beautiful and talented as always, but Judi Dench is the real gem in this one..
A riveting Story Dame Judy Dench always brings a fantastic performance. along with Cate. at times Hard to understand or relate to the movie's storyline. but Actors performances remind you the talent behind the story.
Exceptionally well-acted and thrilling in all aspects, "Notes on a Scandal" is unique, fast-paced, and simply fantastic.
Notes on a Scandal is a tidy little movie about an aging woman who dismantles the lives of those around her by managing loneliness and jealousy with bitterness and vengeful anger. Judi Dench is fantastic, as always, as Barbara, a delusional and authoritarian school teacher with nothing in her life, other than a dying cat and cigarettes, until idealistic new instructor Sheba (Cate Blanchett) shows up at the school. The film is directed by Richard Eyre, who uses many close-ups to show the wide array of emotions the various characters are experiencing. It would have been a bonus to find out how Barbara evolved into the person she is, but then again, the mystery of her character may help to explain the randomness with which lives can fall apart.
Dull and with such unlikable characters it is hard to care what is going on.
A roller coaster of a story that gets more intense as the plot unfolds. Judi Dench’s performance as the lonely, sociopathic teacher was excellent. Many portions of the story were very uncomfortable but were narrated so well with Barbara’s cunning and deception. Definitely a sleeper that shouldn’t be missed
Well worth watching for the excellent acting of the leads. I mean wow, Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett! And the young guy Andrew! Very real, well-directed. And even my favorite guy Bill Nighy in it.
