Nude Tuesday Reviews

However one chooses to understand the scenes in pure gibberish—subtitles be damned—nonetheless drives home one important point. Emotions, in English or Latin or otherwise, are always universal.

| Original Score: B+ | Jul 6, 2024

It’s almost a shame they’ve bothered with the subtitles at all, as much of the comedy speaks for itself, which makes the subtitles feel rather “pushed” to lewd extremes in a bid to extract further laughs in places.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Apr 2, 2023

At 100 minutes, it’s fair to say Nude Tuesday overstays its welcome a little — it’s quite slight, after all - and some of the jokes can be hit and miss. But it’s funny nonetheless.

One the whackiest offerings of the year, & that’s just for its language: gibberish. Every sound spoken by the cast is nonsensical, & the oft-hilarious subtitles, by comic Julia Davis, seemingly were not known to the actors themselves beforehand.

It’s genuinely moving and that feeling is not diminished, even though one does laugh...

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Jul 20, 2022

Overall, Nude Tuesday is a creative leap that mostly lands. The absurdist comedy can be hit or miss, but the ingenuity of the storytelling, respectful treatment of all kinds of bodies, and talent of the actors on screen make it gel together.

| Original Score: 4 | Jul 15, 2022

True to its title, Nude Tuesday does deliver on getting the entire cast fully naked for a climactic/cathartic trip to an ice pond that provides a nice payoff for this quirky deadpan comedy.

It’s mad and it works: a comedy in which the actors speak complete gibberish, with different comedians writing different subtitles to create different films.

| Jul 7, 2022

It’s a likeable film with appealing performances but it can’t shake off the sense that it’s a stretched-out sketch. It’s only half-baked.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jul 5, 2022

A really clever idea, a visit to a new-age retreat and a sustained tone of general nuttiness don't quite deliver on their initial promise, although the gibberish sounds great and the two leads do a good job at portraying malaise in suburbia

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jul 1, 2022

The oddball, fun factor potential is present in Nude Tuesday. But as it stands, it’s just another slightly strange, will they or won’t they get back together, love story.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Jun 30, 2022

There are as many observant layers to Nude Tuesday's dance through married misery as there are clothes shed by its cast.

| Jun 24, 2022

The earnest vulnerability of the actors speaking this nonsense language (even more than the vulnerability of the actors getting naked) is ultimately too endearing to deny. And Julia Davis' attempts to blow the film up with her subtitles is a sight to see.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 24, 2022

Nude Tuesday will undoubtedly get a giggle out of anyone with a pulse.

| Original Score: 4.5/5 | Jun 23, 2022

A Kiwi comedy truly unlike anything ever seen or heard -- in New Zealand and beyond -- Nude Tuesday is a fearlessly uproarious film admirably committed to its own particular kind of strangeness.

| Jun 23, 2022

As a technical feat, it’s impressive -- the actors all seem to be speaking the same gibberish. As for laughs, it has a few, but too few to mention.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Jun 23, 2022

An outrageously hilarious, campy and surprisingly heartfelt comedy for adults.

Between the strange geography of the Hawaii adjacent island of Zøbftań sporting alpine peaks, a predictable drug-taking scene and the surreal dead-panness of it all, I just couldn’t quite get into Nude Tuesday.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jun 23, 2022

This playful comedy from New Zealand looks relatively normal, but is riotously absurd.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Jun 23, 2022

Jemaine Clement bares it all in the hilariously awkward and strange comedy Nude Tuesday.
