October Sky Reviews
An excellent coming of age / feel good story. Clearly a breakout role for Jake Gyllenhaal. I think it should have got some recognition at the Oscars.
Boy oh boy! It's a masterpiece of all times 💖
A absolutely amazing movie with great performances by Gyllenhaal and Dern! Tim Treakle
Thought-provoking in some unexpected ways, and predictably inspiring, October Sky shines the spotlight on an exceptional story based on true events. A very young Jake Gyllenhaal plays the lead perfectly, and is backed up by good performances by the rest of the "Rocket Boys." The historical setting may have been seen before, but the focus on a small coal-mining town makes for relatively uncrowded waters.
Wow wow wow wow wow wow
October Sky is by far one of the most inspirational and heartwarming films I have ever seen. As a young man, I could relate to his academic ambition and his relationship with his father. This film teaches us not to settle for less and to listen to our hearts despite certain people's influence. We also learn about the unity in teamwork, suddenly a shy dork was part of something important and gained lifelong connections. Homer would never be able to win alone, and the team's determination and unity are what made them succeed. The acting from Jake was great but Chris Cooper's was phenomenal. The writing although some would say is predictable,I think not, It was rather well-written, especially the character development with Homer and his father, from being alienated and angry at each other to earning each other's respect and the struggle brought them closer than they were before. October sky is timeless and inspirational and the fact that it is based on a true story makes it even more beautiful.
This is a movie I wish everyone would watch one of my absolute favorites!
There's a song in Norma Rae called "It Goes Like It Goes" in which there's a particular line that goes "bless the child of a working man, she knows too soon who she is, and bless the hands of a working man, he knows his soul is his." I had those lines in my head, repeating, over and over as I watched October Sky, and though the reason might seem obvious, I can't yet put it to words. Watching this film is like witnessing a miracle... you feel all the emotions.
Absolutely phenomenal movie. From the Cinematography to the script, it is nothing short of fantastic story telling.
October Sky is a beautiful family drama that every kid and parent needs to watch. Jake Gyllenhaal delivers a fantastic performance as Homer, but Chris Cooper who plays Homer's conflicted father, is the one who steals the show.
This movie is wonderful and so inspiring. Jake Gyenhal's first film too!
Classic coming of age Hollywood fare, good movie to inspire teenagers to follow their dreams, and emotionally moving especially knowing it's from a true story...despite the fact that a lot of the movie feels rather cliché and predictable. (e.g the tough but in the end loving father, the nasty nerd-allergic teenagers, the tear jerking success achieved by trying again and again despite seemingly impossible odds, the evil unions etc...)
Favorite movie ever
THE BEST MOVIE EVER!!!!!!!!!!
One of my most favorite films!
Following a dream and making it come true has been seen enough times to count them with an abacus. What this cliché has in its favor here is a correctly written script that does not appeal to opportunistic and simple sentimentality, and an interesting cast.
October Sky is a heartwarming and inspiring movie that captures the essence of determination, passion, and perseverance. The film, directed by Joe Johnston, tells the true story of Homer Hickam, a young boy from a small coal-mining town in West Virginia who dreams of building rockets and launching them into space. One of the reasons why October Sky is such a great movie is its ability to draw the audience into the story and make them feel invested in the characters. The film portrays the struggles and challenges faced by Homer and his friends as they pursue their dream of building rockets, while also dealing with the expectations and limitations imposed by their families and community. The performances of the cast are another standout feature of October Sky. Jake Gyllenhaal, who plays the lead role of Homer, delivers a nuanced and emotional performance that captures the character's determination and passion. The supporting cast, including Chris Cooper as Homer's father and Laura Dern as his teacher, also deliver memorable performances that bring depth and complexity to the story. The movie also touches on several themes that resonate with audiences, such as the importance of following one's dreams and the power of education to change lives. These themes are woven into the fabric of the story and provide a sense of depth and meaning that elevates the film beyond a simple coming-of-age tale. Overall, October Sky is a heartwarming and inspiring movie that captures the essence of the American Dream. It is a powerful reminder of the importance of pursuing one's dreams and the impact that determination, passion, and perseverance can have in our lives. It is a movie that will leave you feeling uplifted, inspired, and grateful for the human spirit.
A real feel good film, telling a dramatised true story. It's one I've seen a few times over the years, and enjoyed each time I watch it
An exceptionally motivating film that brought me a passionate feeling. The message of "If you first don't succeed, try try again" is firmly presented and that it provides a great reflection. The reflection of teenagers' innocence, curiosity, and ambition are good traits that make the older times better than the current technology age. Jake Gyllenhaal is a good actor that I admired from certain films, but so far, this one is my favorite of them all. He was able to portray Homer's character with tenacity and the blend between him and other fellow actors is worthwhile to acknowledge. A great film that I can see myself watching in the future.
This is really good. About one of the first people to make U.S. rockets fly properly. High school kids..
