Oliver! Reviews
My mother loved this film and made me watch it as a child, its a great film as is perfect for the family. London when it was something ay?
I DON'T KNOW WHAt HAPPENED. IT'S LIKE IT never ENDED. i CAN’T breAth. Oliver! is NOT A MOVIE. IT'S A TORTURE. A TORMENT. A DEATH TRAP with no exits. I am trapped, TRAPPED in a dark, endless tunnel of Fagin's EYES and THOSE HIDEOUS FINGERS, and I CAN'T ESCAPE. He’s always there, ALWAYS, like a shadow that DRAGS YOU DOWN into a sLimY pit of GUILT and DESPAIR. THE PLOT? ha, dOESN’T MATTER! It's just a TRICK. a TRAP. POOR OLIVER, oh, pOOOR OLIVER, but NOBODY CARES ABOUT HIM!!! Not when Fagin’s THERE, laughing, cackling, CHOKING ON HIS EVILNESS. "Pick a pocket or two", the words rattle in my head like they're made of steel, scraping my skull, burning into my brain. HE’S CONTROLLING ME NOW. He’s in my thoughts. He’s the whisper, the scratch at the back of my mind. I CAN'T THINK! I CAN’T ESCAPE! He’s teaching those kids—those innocent kids to STEAL. TO BE CRIMINALS. He IS a CRIMINAL. and every time he’s ON SCREEN, he’s there in the corners of my EYES, SMIRKING. I can feel him. I can FEEL HIM. Those eyes—THOSE EYES—HAUNT ME. EVERY TIME FAgIN SINGS, IT’S LIKE HE’S RIPPING MY MIND OPEN. I hear his laugh, and it echoes. And the KIDS—THE POOR KIDS—oh, they’re stuck! They CAN’T GET OUT! Neither can I! I’m chained to his voice. His SMIRK. THE WHOLE MOVIE—just a continuous loop of Fagin’s EVIL, the streets of London, filled with grime and SHAME. I can’t breathe. THE AIR IS STUFFY. Too thick. TOO THICK WITH HIM. FAgIN!! He's the everything. The all. The movie doesn’t care. It doesn’t care about Oliver, it doesn’t care about Nancy, it only CARES ABOUT FAgIN. And Nancy—God, Nancy! She TRIES to do the right thing, TRIES to save Oliver, but oh no... FAGIN. HE WON’T LET HER GO. HE WON'T LET ANYONE GO! SHE CAN'T ESCAPE. I CAN'T ESCAPE. It’s all part of his PLAN. HIS SICK GAME. AND YOU KNOW WHAT? IT NEVER ENDS. It keeps going. It keeps turning in my head. It NEVER STOPS. I am trapped in the sound of Fagin's voice, in his manipulation, in his tricks, in his disgustingness. I can’t escape this HELL. SO WATCH IT IF YOU WANT TO BE CONDEMNED. Watch it if you want to FEEL THE CREEPINESS OF Fagin's VOICE CRAWL UNDER YOUR SKIN, into your bones. I’VE TRIED TO RUN. I’VE TRIED TO HIDE. BUT HE’S ALWAYS THERE. ALWAYS. ALWAYS. I’M TRAPPED. I WILL NEVER BE FREE. NEVER.
I absolutely Adore this movie i love all the characters and actors its a must-see!
Hey kids! Have you ever wanted to feel such PAIN and SUFFERING that you CRAVE to have Peppa Pig toddle along and hold your head underwater for hours just to put an end to the TORTURE? Then why don't you watch "Oliver!"? Seriously - the pain I felt while watching this garbage was the worst I have EVER felt in my whole life, ESPECIALLY when Fagin🤮 was on screen. And he was on screen for AGES (probably more than the TITLE CHARACTER) and basically all he did in the whole movie was 1) Waddle up and down in front of the camera making ugly faces and weird noises which are apparently supposed to be his voice but they sound more like DEMONIC GARGLES and 2) Randomly break into the most absurd song you have ever heard and stomp around the floor saying things like "Iwuhawaysweepaclarrages arunthefeetacarraiges" (I still have NO IDEA what the actual lyrics are and I have literally replayed that part over 50 times). And the worst part is in Dickens' original book which this movie seems to be loosely based on, Fagin🤮 actually DIED, which totally serves him right, but in this movie they had to just go and RUIN THE WHOLE THING by giving him a HAPPY ENDING. I'm sorry, but WHAT?????? I just wasted 2 WHOLE HOURS on this movie thinking that at the end of it it would all finally pay off by Fagin🤮 dying. And GUESS WHAT? I JUST GET TO SEE FAGIN🤮 AND THE ARTFUL DODGER JOYFULLY DANCING OFF INTO THE SUNSET (or sunrise, I don't care) AFTER PROUDLY DECLARING THAT THEY WOULD BE TOGETHER UNTIL THEIR DYING DAY. Ew. So, in conclusion, I BEG YOU not to waste your time on this. If you want to see what Oliver Twist is, please just read the book. At least Fagin🤮 is actually a well written character in that.
A timeless classic. Great story, great acting and great memorable songs. By far the best version of Oliver Twist.
Grew up watching this. Nostalgic fantastic classic.
The last of the great big screen musicals, with brilliant production design, characteristically strong direction by Carol (The Third Man) Reed, a wonderful score and lyrics by Lionel Bart, and marvellous choreography by Onna White. Ron Moody and Shani Wallis take the acting honours, and Mark Lester is a winsome Oliver. Only Oliver Reed's pantomime villain Bill Sikes let's the side down: about as menacing as a haddock.
Fun catchy, songs, solid cast and a great story making this a great musical and a classic watch.
It hasn't aged well in several respects, but "Oliver!" has a charming cast, impressive choreography, and immersive production design that other '60s movie musicals were naturally adept at.
This is one of, if not, the best musical ever. I've loved this movie ever since I was a young child and I still love it to this day, no matter how many times I've seen it (believe me, it's a lot!). I'm not a very big fan of musicals of any sort but this musical is just perfect. If you love great musical songs and a great storyline, such as Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist, then you will love this fun adaption.
Catchy songs, really fun choreography during the musical numbers, great performances from the entire cast and even some funny moments to offset the more emotionally heavy moments make Oliver! another classic in the genre that was at the height of its popularity at the time this adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens tale came out. Though my personal favourite from this era will still be Fiddler on the Roof but hey, I never went into this movie to make unfair comparisons. If you're a musical fan and have never seen Oliver! then where have you been this whole time? Go watch it now.
A fantastic amazingly-directed film with some very memorable performances. I never sat down to watch this film in full but when I did I recognised so many of the classic songs that are so well-written and stupendously choreographed on screen. My favourite songs were, of course, "Food, Glorious Food", "Reviewing the Situation" and "Consider Yourself" to name a few. Ron Moody's performance as Fagin is remarkable, especially in his performance of "Reviewing the Situation". How he lost to Cliff Robertson in the Best Actor Oscar race is phenomenal, as Robertson's performance in Charly must be truly great to have won the award. Out of the nominees I have seen, I would put Moody's performance just above Arkin's in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, another amazing performance. The only song I did not like that much and went on for far too long was "Who Will Buy?". The song just repeated it's boring melody over and over again and became tiresome. Jack Wild was very good, witty and captivating in his performance as The Artful Dodger, especially in the wonderful "Consider Yourself" segment. He was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar but lost to Jack Albertson in The Subject was Roses. From the nominees I have seen, I thought Wild was definitely better than Seymour Cassel in Faces. Lester, Reed and Wallis all do great jobs at portraying Oliver, Bill Sikes and Nancy, respectively. I thought Oliver Reed deserved a Best Supporting Oscar nomination, he was so sinisterly good. Carol Reed deservedly won the Oscar for Best Director beating out heavyweights such as Kubrick for 2001: A Space Odyssey and Pontecorvo for The Battle of Algiers. The amount of work that had to go into directing these actors and story boarding each scene and sequence puts Reed over the other directors nominated that year, even though The Battle of Algiers is just a bit behind in second place for me. Oliver also deservedly won Best Score, Best Sound and Best Art Direction. Finally, the film won the most coveted prize the Best Picture Oscar and although I haven't seen the other nominees, I believe it very much deserves to have that distinction. Wonderfully fun, brilliantly acted and masterfully directed; Oliver! is a fantastically engaging and supremely vivacious film.
An enjoyable if inconsistent film, hampered by overlong musical numbers and an occasional lack of momentum, Oliver! was, for me at least, a good time that simply went on longer than necessary. Musical films on the big screen can be hit and miss, and I think one of the main problems they have is trying to keep the audience's attention with the length of the songs, and not testing their patience with their frequency. Here, we have a song that makes a point, explains how a character is feeling, introduces a plot element etc, and them proceeds to hammer it in for several more minutes. It was like the Leos Carax musical Annette of 2021, where the musical numbers dragged on well after they'd said what they needed to say, and as a result you just end up feeling bored. That said, the songs are fantastically choreographed, with tonnes of individuals dancing, singing and contributing to the movement of the scene. My favourite character, at least the one who stuck out the most, was Fagin, played with devilish delight by Ron Moody. Despite being the titular character, and the one who compels the films most significant events, Oliver doesn't actually get that much focus. He often gets brushed to the side, which is a shame, because Mark Lester's performance is both charming and authentic, so I'd like to have seen more of what he was capable of. Oliver Reed is memorably malevolent, and Shani Wallis is a very likeable heroine, and represents the moral centre of the storyline through her dogged determination to help Oliver any way she can. It's not aged well in many regards, and doesn't appeal to me the way My Fair Lady, Singin' In The Rain and others did, but for its seamless production and catchy songs, I'd say it's definitely worth a watch.
One viewing of this film gave me enough information to formulate a cockney accent to audition, but not win a role in my town's staged production of this. I had never tried out for a part before, and this film gave me the confidence I could play The Artful Dodger despite being a girl, since the ad in the paper clearly stated "We do not discriminate against sex or gender; Open to All" which I assumed meant there would be lots of girls wanting to play the boys parts because the girls roles sucked. Turns out I was wrong about that, but, I'm sure it is different now. Recommended to any person who wants to learn a bad cockney accent* for their town's production and play the opposite role of their assigned sex. Oliver! can probably be retired as a musical, otherwise... *Cockney accent could only be maintained while singing FOOD! Glor-E-us FOOD!
Glossy, treatment of the musical. All of the grittiness of the novel has been done away with. Sugary and sweet.
Although "Oliver!" is very influential and iconic to this day, the poor aging of the acting, cheesiness, and overload of musical numbers take away from a timeless movie
My favourite upbeat musical about child slavery, domestic abuse and poverty. Automatically loses three stars for being a musical but other than that it is excellent.
