Swordplay in the classic style. Great fun. Watched it 4 times then my old vhs tape gave up the ghost and snapped. Daniel Auteuil is a great actor.....so versatile.....'Harry' in 'The Eighth Day' and 'Ugolin' in 'Jean de Florette'. In 'Le Bossu' he ends up holding the baby.....and there's a hunchback in it (again). Very good film if you like The Three Musketeer type movie.....french style.
outlandish but loads of fun. the kind of film i thought they didn't make anymore: swashbuckling in grand style!
As someone who doesn't make enough effort to track down the movies he'd really like to see, and who rarely troubles to watch anything a second time, the fact that I've now seen Le Bossu three times - having actively hunted for it on two of those three occasions(!) - must mean that I'm rather fond of it. Yes, some of the plot developments take a little swallowing, the love story is kind of kinky and the film never quite recovers from the loss of Vincent Perez, but it's romantic to a fault, the period recreation is exquisite, the performances are delightful and there's literally an exciting twist or turn every five or so minutes. What I admire most about Le Bossu, however, is that it's a textbook example of that seemingly effortless French lightness of touch which Hollywood invariably translates into indigestible stodge. Daniel Auteuil is wonderful here.
Really swashbuckly and cute and funny... except for the sort-of-incesty romance storyline. I could have done without that. WHYYYYYYYYYYYY?
Hunchback! Albinoes! Treacherous (Italian) villains! Cute frenche underaged damsels! En Garde! It's the ultimate swashbuckling feulletton dream flick. Love it, or surrender!
Not bad for a silly period film. As ever, the French make much better films of this sort than we do, and Auteuil is as watchable as ever. Loved the father/daughter weirdness.
Errol Flynn wishes he could make a swashbuckling film this cool (well if he wasn't dead that is). A perfect Sunday afternoon with a bucket of biscuits and a gallon of tea film.
Bonne surprise !
I love historical movies and even flawed films such as Casanova were awesome in my eyes but this was just plain silly. Swashbuckle films always hit me the most due to their style and humour. I know De Broca has a reputation an d he is probably good and I will watch more by him but this film has it all coming, it is so obvious, it was really a bore and never allows anything to arrive that makes intrigued, everything is done like an amateur writer's work, no excitement and the only things that were worth noting is one of the set-pieces where the sword kills through the head which is vulnerable unless you wear an helmet and where the guy gets shot and leave, that was good though nothing new and thee acting of the arch-villain was awesome as well as were his look but his personaluty were barely explored and overall, a disappointment. The music was utterly fine as well but maybe was badly used.
Foreign, French. A very good movie! If you like swashbuckling movies, like 'The Count of Monte Cristo', you will like this. Based on Moliere'.
Fun swashbuckler with more character focus than similar films. For added points the fencing is supposed to be a pretty accurate portrayal of traditional European martial arts.
