Once Reviews
"Once" is a movie that left me unimpressed. The plot felt so lackluster that it seemed like I could have made something similar while eating chips and playing The Sims. I honestly can't understand how it has the ratings it does. That said, the music was decent and probably the only redeeming quality. It wasn't a movie just music.
I love this film. It is sweet and touching, without being cloying or cute. The people feel heartfelt and sincere as do their actions and choices. If it could only have had a different ending (and only if that ending was authentic) See it. You are missing something that is well worth your time.
Last man on earth sang it better.
This is the worst movie I’ve ever seen and their singing sounds like nails on a chalkboard. They keep singing the same, terrible song over and over again. I couldn’t take it anymore.
We wanted them to stop singing! We only watched the first 15 minutes.
Absolutely wonderful and beautiful film. Incredible music, and amazing performances! Take an hour and a half out of your day and you won't regret it. Wish I saw this a long time ago.
A "just okay" Irish musical. Highly forgettable.
Favorite musical rom com
Didn't like the music. The story felt slow. I was bored.
The music is so impactful. Love this movie and the actors
So melancolic, with a painfully beautyful soundtrack. Loved it!
Throughout high school and college, music was a huge part of my life and education. One of the experiences that brought tremendous joy was jamming. Creating new sounds and rhythms on the spur of the moment, sharing chord progressions with other musicians through instinct, skill and some luck. It's never perfect, but it's always immensely fulfilling and enjoyable. Watching the film Once (2007) was akin to being part of such a jam session… a deeply personal and incredibly satisfying 86-minute jam. Once tells the tale of an Irish guy (Glen Hansard) who fixes vacuums at his dad's shop during business hours but then operates as a street busker at night in order to play his music and earn some extra cash. While performing he meets a young immigrant Czech girl (Markea Irglova). Though she works odd jobs (selling roses in the street and cleaning houses) she also comes from a musical family. She and the guy soon begin collaborating and creating marvelous songs. Their melodies seem to express feelings they share for each other, though the guy is getting over a recent break-up and the girl has an estranged husband. The music is so enchanting. Almost every song was written by Hansard and/or Irglova. The two are professional musicians and had previously performed together as a folk-rock duo. This would be only the second acting experience for Hansard and the first for Irglova. Their acting inexperience aside, the two have an extraordinary chemistry and both deliver honest performances. The movie is a very low budget one, filmed in just 17 days with handheld cameras and using natural lighting. This technique elicits a feeling of intimacy and compliments the tone of the lower working-class existence that both characters live in. While technically this film would be categorized as a love story, it is not a predictable one. Like any great jam session, predictability is not allowed. And that's a very good thing. Viewing Once was an emotionally renewing and rewarding experience. It was a stellar reminder that unforgettable story telling, like great music, doesn't always require big budgets.
This film had a very annoying singing voice in it 👎
Low budget, with amateur camera work, but still totally and utterly engaging. It's a film totally about the two main characters, and their stories told through their creativity. A couple of the original songs are stunning. Rich, emotional, real life people, sharing a chapter in each other's lives, despite not being able to continue together. There's romance and poetry, chemistry and love, and all without being sentimental. Beautiful
The best movie song ever sung: Falling Slowly!
One of the best romance films I've ever seen. The story is engaging and well paced. The two leads have great chemistry and carry the movie exceptionally well and their song "Falling Slowly" is a masterpiece.
Fantastic movie, the fact that it was filmed with a hand camera makes it even more grounded and realistic.
Beautiful and unique. Very simple but meaningful. Outstanding soundtrack!!
I really enjoyed this Irish film, due to the music played, the down to earth characters and comic aspects it contained. Its not excessively sentimental but it is a bit heart warming (i.e. in a good way!). The camerawork featured gives it a feel of perhaps a low budget documentary or 온라인카지노추천 show but that sort of worked in its favour I think. It certainly didn't feel like a Hollywood version/Hollywood-ised Irish film. Its contemporary and I liked the performances, particularly Glen Hansard as Guy. The two main characters certainly do appear to have a genuine spark and I enjoyed seeing them open up about things, talking and enjoying the time they have together. If your a fan of music (primarily folk based music I suppose, it has to be said) and romance type films, then I'd highly recommend this film. Its perhaps not brilliant but its certainly good - it has a genuine feel to it and is undoubtedly worth seeing at least 'once'.
