Our Idiot Brother Reviews
The low ratings on this shock me. Maybe not enough people know hippie types like the main character and his ex-girlfriend and can appreciate how spot on the writing is. I felt like they conjured up people I've met over the years. Paul Rudd is more of an irresistible golden retriever in this than the actual dog. The mean passive-aggressive hippie chick played by Kathryn Hahn is spot on, she always makes me laugh. The cast is outstanding across the board, with Sterling K. Brown AND Adam Scott AND Elizabeth Banks AND Steve Coogan, (who also stars with Paul later in the also criminally underrated Ideal Home) who can resist? This is a great charming feel-good movie, easy to rewatch on a rainy day or when you just want to enjoy some pure Rudd.
Rudd is perfectly cast as an impossibly honest brother who innocently, but agreeably, disrupts the various lives of his three sisters. Our Idiot Brother is both sweet and amusing, if not particularly funny. It tends to meander a bit, but greatly benefits from an attractive and immensely likable cast. Banks, as one of Rudd’s sisters, is a particular standout.
The cast makes this movie work! Paul Rudd is Lebowski reborn!
It is the role Paul Rudd was born to play. He doesn't even have to act, not that he ever does. The rest of the cast id cute but not enough to carry the movie.
Great movie from start to finish. The cast is incredible and the movie is super well written and executed. You can never go wrong with Paul Rudd who is exceptional throughout.
That was such an endearing movie. Great cast! Free Willie Nelson!
A light-hearted feel good comedy that is carried by Paul Rudd's performance.
Ned (Paul Rudd) is the eternal optimist, a man who trusts others, believes in the value of telling the truth, and is always willing to give the benefit of the doubt to others. On the other hand, his three sisters (Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer) think he's an idiot. Our Idiot Brother is a comedy that is unlikely to generate a lot of laughs, but seems content to settle for warm smiles and some good will. The cast, which also includes Steve Coogan, Rashida Jones and T.J. Miller, is uniformly excellent and the dialogue feels real throughout. Granted, it's not the most memorable movie and it does seem to lose its way at times, but it is an enjoyable watch and you might just learn a thing or two from the incorrigible Ned.
I liked this movie a lot. Very entertaining, Some drama, some comedy. Many great actors.
Paul Rudd was in this movie
was a quirky watch. who doesn't love a good paul rudd movie?
A hippie organic farmer, at a farmer's market, sells marijuana to a uniformed policeman and goes to jail. Upon release, he goes back to his farm, but his former girlfriend rejects him and he ends up going back to his urbanized mother and sisters. But once there, he ends up accidentally causing them grief by unintentionally exposing their dirty secrets and bad behavior...not out of malice, but with good intentions. This is supposed to be a comedy, but there are no laughs. The idea is that he is supposed to be the foolish but virtuous person trying to correct his relatives' misbehavior, but there is so much profanity, simulated sex scenes, and overall vulgarity-involving small children, yet, that any moralism in this movie is sabotaged. This might have been a decent movie if they had tried. But they ended up combining the worst of all worlds and turning the movie into a failure as a comedy or as a morality play.
Maybe I enjoyed it more because Paul Rudd's in it? But I know if it was played by anyone else than it would probably be a really horrible film.
With such a promising and talented cast, I was hoping for a good laugh but was disappointed. It was painfully stupid and uninteresting. I was also disturbed by the foul language and ignorant use of inappropriate words. 1 star for the meet cute at the end, but again not really funny.
I get it. Brother is an idiot while the girls have to have their shit together. Would there be a version where there are 3 brothers who are responsible and they call her their idiot sister?
