The Outlaw Josey Wales Reviews

Mar 22, 2025

Probably Eastwoods best movie.

Chief Dan George was the highlight of this movie for me. He really stole every scene in which he appeared. Otherwise, a lot of the performances were rather lackluster. As for Clint Eastwood, I think the super macho roles in which he takes our entire groups of people who are shooting at him are a bit goofy. It was just an OK watch.

One of my all time favorite movies.

Outlaw Josey Wales is not your usual revenge movie. It is set during the Civil War. It shows what happens when a country comes apart at the seams. Senseless violence and murder become commonplace and it is impossible to draw a line between right and wrong. The movie has an antihero in Cllint Eastwood who has lost everything. He strikes against a Goliath that has taken over the country. This Goliath talks about righteousness and justice but it becomes a muddled nightmare. Quoting from the leader of the opposition, doing good ain't got no end. It haunts you because you see that it is a story that has been repeated over and over through history.

No time to get invested in the characters. Many ridiculous one-man-army scenes. Overall boring.

Clint delivers one his top 10 performances on screen and a top 5 directing performance for this masterpiece. Absolutely love this movie. Tim Treakle

One of the best films of all time - and not just this genre. Everything about it is superb; storyline, acting, script, scenery, directing. I swear it has everything. This is a must see movie, again and again and again………….

This movie is probably Clint Eastwoods best. Josie Wales is the perfect character for Eastwood. He is tough, strong and basically the perfect man. The story is also very well written.

It were impossible to shot nowadays a movie like this: with a Confederate as Good Guy! We are living in censorship times.

Clint Eastwood's portrayal of Josey Wales is exactly what you'd expect (stoic intensity along with terrifying one-liners) but the rest of the characters are all wonderfully strange and unique . . . so while Wales is a familiar character, the world he occupies is not. Ultimately, what makes "The Outlaw Josey Wales" far more complex and daring than your standard revenge story is that it actually portrays the negative effects of violence on individuals and communities.

Ones of his best movies ever! I quoted pieces of the movie so many times, the Rascals at work began quoting it! Ha!

Clint Eastwood is an immortal legend in film at this point, and I always find it neat whenever I find out that that he directs movies where he plays major roles in (and it's directed very well). He was practically made for the western/action genre. The movie felt like it dragged a few times but it had some epic and significant moments. It was also shot in a very quality way for when it came out. I'm not sure if I watched a more HD version but whatever kind of camera they used to shoot the movie made it look really good! I might not recommend it to someone else who's young like I am but I'm always glad I watch his films!

I'm here after having seen this movie many times over the decades since I first saw it (when it came out) -- most of all to repudiate these so called "critics" who nauseate we who are entertained with their unending complaints. Why (or how) do these people even get paid? At 63 I've seldom ever paid them a moment's notice, and when I have it's because I accidentally saw one of their stupid, self centered derogatory comments. I've spent my life enjoying movies without needing some busybody telling me what I should watch or why I shouldn't, and I've done just fine having a good time. *This* movie ENTERTAINS. It's a classic, always has been and always will be. The critics on the other hand.. either have or will soon die away and memories of them will disappear. PS I am also a civil war and military buff (and Army veteran.) This movie did just fine in their depictions of those, and also you should read about the interactions between Clint and Chief Dan. It was a sincerely respective relationship. Go elsewhere to scream racist, fools.

Westerns contain their fair share of loners, characters who drift from one town to another, staying only for the length of one adventure, and them moving on. Josey Wales seems to fit into this tradition of loner heroes at first, but eventually he turns the expectation on its head. Wales shares all the usual characteristics of a Clint Eastwood hero. He is surly and uncommunicative. He rigidly maintains his own moral code of justice. He has extraordinary powers with a gun that border on the supernatural. During the course of the film, he kills 55 people, and is only shot once. Wales is a solitary figure, but one that has a good reason to remain so. At the start of the film, he is a Missouri farmer with a wife and son, but he loses his home and family when his house is burnt down by Unionist guerrillas. After this, he practises his shooting before joining a Confederate guerrilla group that offers him a chance to fight back against those who killed his wife and son, and destroyed his farm. With the end of the war, he refuses to surrender to the Unionist army, and sees his former comrades treacherously gunned down by the victors. Josey responds by turning the guns on the bluecoats, and spends the rest of the movie as an outlaw being pursued by soldiers and bounty hunters, led by the reluctant Captain Fletcher (John Vernon). Our hero then tries hard to avoid commitments. He knows that his presence will bring down the full force of the law on him and his companions. He also darkly comments that when he likes someone, they are not around long. He is referring to his wife and children, and his fellow-soldiers, especially Jamie (Sam Bottoms), a young trooper who Wales tries to take with him, but who succumbs to his wounds. However this loner unexpectedly gathers a small surrogate community around him as he travels the country. As he does so, the tone of the movie becomes lighter. The first act of the film is dark, literally as well as figuratively. Often the characters' faces are covered in shadow. I am not sure if this is intentional, or a weakness on Eastwood's part. The same problem can be found in Unforgiven, a western that Eastwood directed sixteen years later. This changes as Wales gathers friends and allies around him. The whole film is suffused with a libertarian anti-government message, and this explains the hostile portrayal of the Unionist side, which is here blamed for spreading central government across the southern states. Hence the heroes of the movie are Confederates and Native Americans, the victims of big government. There are no sympathetic Unionist soldiers, and there is no attempt to portray the dark side of the South. Wales is joined by displaced Native Americans, but he does not encounter emancipated slaves. There is no reference to the KKK or lynchings. Of course it is not necessary to fully endorse the agenda of any movie to enjoy it. The Outlaw Josey Wales succeeds as a movie because it tells the story in an exciting manner, and it has likeable characters. Eastwood showed that he was a capable director as well as actor, and this film helped to cement his position as a man who could make movies as well as act in them. I've been aware of this film since it came out but have only just seen it. What a mistake I made! A top notch, first rate western in every aspect. Charming, tough, unpredictable and with great characters. A real gem.

I've seen much better westerns, clint east wood is the bright moments in the is long film that loses focus, it's not really about revenge it's about the journey, it's dull and boring.

1976. CLINT EASTWOOD! A classic! Good Italian western style & music. A classic 'revenge' story, versus loathsome baddies. And true conservative Republican he-man Clint defends the Indians and kills the truly bad guys, including Union soldiers. I was going to take a 1/2 star off, cuz I don't like the name Josey for a guy, but naaaah. max 5 stars. Saw it on the GRIT 온라인카지노추천, 6.24.23. Note to self, next time pay attention to the first hour or so. It's long.

Loved this gritty unapologetic western. Interesting in having a sympathetic Conferdate characted from the Civil War, showing him as a moral individual rather than just another southern bad guy.

A great Eastwood western drama that you aren't likely to forget.
