Over the Moon Reviews
An unexpected yet powerful story about love and loss. It was put on in the background as we did other things around the houses and it very quickly became the focal point for the next 2hrs. CONTINUE READING ON LETTERBOXD: https://boxd.it/62lAp5
Not bad, not great. I might recommend if you are a fan of these types of movies. (6.3/10 - Good)
dang, this made me cry. While I think it goes rather fast, it manages to squeeze in A lot of learning experiences for the main character that don't feel forced.
"Over the Moon" is a 2020 Netflix animated film directed by Glen Kean and John Kahrs. The two of them had previously worked on Disney films like "Beauty and the Beast", "Tangled" and "The Incredibles". At times this film can very much feel like a film from the Disney Renaissance Era. There are cute animal sidekicks, parental issues and a whole lot of songs. The movie has 22 credited songs on the soundtrack. I appreciate the effort in creating so many original songs for the movie, unlike say "Trolls" which is more of a "jukebox musical", singing covers of pre-existing songs. The movie has so many songs, that they kind of start to blend together, none of them really stand out. On the positive side, there aren't any obnoxious earworms that are stuck in my head for days. The movie is not very tightly written, there are plenty of loose ends and wasted time. There are plot points that go nowhere and could have been cut out of the story without anything being missed. They set up a mystery at one point that has no satisfactory pay off. The main girl, Fei Fei, can be really annoying sometimes. She is short sighted, stubborn and really mean. Speaking of annoying, Ken Jeong joins the movie as animal sidekick number 4 and... honestly he's not too bad. And that is the movie in a nutshell, it's not too bad. I enjoyed the original songs. The animation is colorful and imaginative. There is a world they go to that reminds me of what a child would doodle with their crayons. The movie isn't doing anything groundbreaking, but it was a nice story told in a creative way. I'm not over the moon with it, but I am pleasantly surprised.
It’s a such a great movie, just finished watching it again for the 100th time, definitely recommend, the songs are very catchy and the message is touching!
My 5 y/o granddaughter is hooked. Her 18 m/o brother marvels at the explosions of color and says “wow!”
This movie is amazing and has catchy songs !
A mi parecer es una película muy bonita, su diseño, animación y la diosa de la luna es el mejor personaje.
Not original with many outdated Chinese stereotypes. Poorly written
The Mooncake song is my absolute favorite! We need more movies like these. My heartiest thanks to all the folks involved in making this movie magic.
I love musicals and water towns (lived in Shanghai for 4 years). Over The Moon is such a breath of fresh air and the emotional depth in this movie really stuck a cord with me. Kudos to the team who made this story come to life.
One of the worst films I've ever seen, but back in 2020 a lot of us were stuck at home, absorbing whatever new content was available. This film' looks good... on par with animation powerhouses like Disney & DreamWorks. It even starts off just like a standard Disney animated film, with the main character Fei Fei losing a parent. 15 minutes in, this was still pretty good, if not derivative, in its setup. What ensued just goes further and further off the rails, with Fei Fei's stepbrother, Chin, becoming increasingly torturous to my ears, and then Ken Jeong's Gobi was also grating to the point where we liked him less because of it. I don't know how this was nominated for a Golden Globe (best animated feature film), perhaps no other animated movies were released that year? The only reason we finished watching it was so we never had to start watching it again. 1.5/10, F- I've seen worse, but not.by much YMMV: this would probably be a solid 6/10 if you're 6 years old, or you view this while high
Over the Moon is an amazing movie. I watched it kind of a long time ago, but I remember it was amazing. Over the Moon is a really interesting movie. It also has a good message too. What a good movie.
I think this movie deserves way more credit than what it gets. Ofc, there was some idiotic stuff here and there but overall it was good, I'd recommend it.
Characters are bad, the movie is Boring. The only "good" thing about this movie is the animation
Nice animation (in the style of Pixar / Disney). However too much (bad) singing... and really weird story for "Westeners".
Spoilers ahead: I was struck by the film's great animation. The writers did a good job of making the audience emotionally attached to the mother. The film does a good job of addressing complex ideas of how to grow around grief. The wall of darkness that enveloped Fei Fei and Chang'e in the end was penetrated by love and new experiences. The loss, the grief, doesn't ever completely go away, but one can learn to love new things and incorporate the memories of that which was lost. I was surprised seeing the audience review scores. I've read a few comparisons to Disney/Pixar. Perhaps some were expecting the movie to fit a Disney/Pixar mold, and were disappointed when the film did not meet those expectations. I enjoyed the songs throughout the movie. The melodies were simple and the songs were written to follow the movie's themes, not necessarily for commercial success. Each character was thoughtfully designed, none suffering from same-face syndrome. Also, the food in the movie is like the 3D equivalent to Studio Ghibli food. You'll really want to eat it. Overall, I found Over the Moon to be a refreshing take on a common theme.
I am not a fan of the jelly-like art style. They pronounce "Zhong" incorrectly. I don't like the story either. Overall not entertaining.
What a beautiful movie! After watching turning red which was a disappointment...this was so refreshing. The Chinese culture is depicted so beautifully in this movie. The story is moving...funny and the songs are terrific. Loved it!!
