Palm Springs Reviews

Apr 23, 2025

Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti are incredibly charming and hilarious in this oddball rom-com! Director Max Barbakow’s indie sci-fi romantic-comedy Palm Springs (2020) is hysterically funny and tenderly intimate. Barbakow’s creative direction is delightful and makes 90 minutes feel like 30 to me. Palm Springs is so cheerful, zany, and romantic that I could not help but swoon for the adorable Cristin Milioti. Palm Springs would be a great date movie too. It balances pessimistic nihilism, postmodernist skepticism, millennial irony, genuine affection, intimate secrets, passionate love, with a hopeful sense of romantic possibilities. Writer Andy Siara takes the ridiculous premise of a guy and a girl at a wedding getting stuck in a time loop together, who then find a way to make all the goofy scenarios of infinite life turn into sincere love. Watching these characters have fun, get frustrated, and find affection in an honest relationship. Palm Springs bear the heart of a real romantic. Palm Springs is like a bizarre mixture of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Groundhog Day, Jumper, The Matrix, 50 First Dates, Wander Darkly, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Casting directors Allison Jones and Ben Harris cast the wonderful Cristin Milioti as the love interest for a perfect pairing with the lovable goofball Andy Samberg. Andy Samberg is delightful as the romantic hero Nyles. Samberg nails the dry wit, forlorn depression, lonely isolation, frustrated anger, and tender affection of Nyles. He’s a riot to watch unfold as a man, since Nyles feels insecure and selfish at first. Then we see Samberg open up with his feelings in a surprisingly sincere turn. He’s quite playful and endearing. Cristin Milioti is effortlessly gorgeous, hilarious, endearing, charming, flirty, moving, heartbreaking, and affectionate as the romantic heroine Sarah Wilder. Milioti elevates the material into truly inspired jokes with her manic playfulness for the comedy and raw emotions for the drama. She leans into Sarah’s insecurities and guilt as the half-sister of the bride. I liked seeing Cristin Milioti open us emotionally and find Sarah’s personality and romantic side. J. K. Simmons is a blast as the man hunting Nyles named Roy Schlieffen. I like how he gives up and matures, as he teaches Nyles the value of life and love. Meredith Hagner is a scream as Nyles’ silly girlfriend Misty with her outrageously funny voice. Camila Mendes is pretty and likable as the bride Tala Anne Wilder. Tyler Hoechlin is great as the sleazy groom Abe Schlieffen. Peter Gallagher is very amusing as the father of the bride Howard Wilder. Jacqueline Obradors is nice as Sarah’s stepmother and Tala’s mother Pia Wilder. June Squibb gets a cute cameo as the groom’s grandmother Nana Schlieffen. Jena Friedman is super funny as the deadpan wedding bartender Daisy. Martin Kildare is great as the disgruntled bar bartender Ted. Dale Dickey is funny too as the tough woman Darla in the bar. Brian Duffy’s cameo as the gun range owner Spuds is pleasant. Editors Andrew Dickler and Matthew Friedman slickly cut together tons of montages of playful antics and romantic gestures. Cinematographer Quyen Tran shoots stunning close-up shots and wide shots with all kinds of playful visuals. The vivid lighting by Stephan Dalyai looks fabulous. I really enjoyed composer Matthew Compton’s heavy synth score. I kept thinking about Risky Business and Tangerine Dream while listening to it. Costume designer Colin Wilkes’ cute outfits are so colorful and flattering. Makeup artists Galaxy San Juan, Chelsea Orduno, and Teresa Aguilera let Cristin Milioti shine with a radiant look. Her flowing hair by Peter Kukla, Patricia Vecchio, and Kimberley Spiteri looks fantastic. Overall, Palm Springs is adorable, amusing, and affectionate thanks to Cristin Milioti and Andy Samberg’s wonderful acting.

Awesome role cast, really good movie!

This is the best time-loop movie ever made. It manages to make a unique plot out of a genre which has been done over and over again. The film features strong performances from all its leading cast. My only knock is that I wish the ending were a little bit more satisfying. I will likely look back on this movie as one of the best of the 2020's.

Palm Springs - 8.5/10. Andy Samberg has had an interesting career since his departure from SNL. He has progressed his career in terms of his comedic timing and range in acting. Palm Springs is a romantic comedy fantasy film which seems super familiar but super inventive. Debut director Max Barbakow delivers a movie similar to Ground Hogday and Happy Death Day but gives his own interesting take on the time loop plot device. The film follows two wedding guests that have entered an endless loop and try to manage their lives living in this endless loop. The main leads of Samberg and Cristin Milioti are charming and great in this film. They do a great job of delivering a stereotypical romcom performance along with some smart spoofing of that very genre. They create likeable characters that we grow to understand as the film progresses. An impressive thing about this movie is that its a lot more deeper than your average romcom film. Discussions about the meaning of life are littered all over the place and create for some interesting conversation in the film. Even the idea of quantum physics is discussed (which you never would see in your average romcom). J.K. Simmons delivers a funny small performance in the film, while the rest of the cast do a great job of playing their characters. This film is definitely a lot more of a mature outing from The Lonely Island crew, and feels like a nice step forward for the team to explore more varieties of comedy. A nice surprise of a film!

I don't often get to say this about relatively recent movies (as in, I can't remember the last time) but this is one of my favourites. While I wish they actually shot this in Palm Springs, it's an otherwise perfect movie. Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti are brilliant, and who would ever take issue with JK Simmons. Funny, moving, poignant, and sad - it has it all, and it makes a compelling case that life isn't so different from the characters' never-ending, seemingly purposeless day-on-repeat. Like Nyles, I suspect, I'm happy with repeat watching with this one.

WHAT ABOUT ROY?! HOW THEY GOING TO JUST LET HIM SUFFER LIKE THAT?! Besides this it was an awesome movie.....

I thought it was gonna be so cliché and bad, and it ended up being quite great! A few things did not make sense but who cares, logic is not the point of the movie.

This is in my Top Ten favorite movies. Love the happy backdrop of a wedding that’s just a facade hiding family drama and betrayal. Spoiler alert: More philosophical cousin of GROUNDHOG DAY with excellent soundtrack. Love the cast and award winning cinematography.

It's an interesting twist of the time loop story. Having multiple characters stuck in the same loop instead of just one.

Infinite time loop romcom set at a wedding (seriously, could you think of much worse than being stuck at the same wedding for eternity?). There's not a huge amount that's new about it, but it's easy to see why it became such a lockdown hit. It's witty, with several laugh-out-loud moments, and some good performances - especially from the excellent Cristin Milioti. We could have done with more J. K. Simmons, who shines in every scene he's in, but that's a pretty much given of every film Simmons is in. It's not revolutionary, but it's a fun, engaging watch. It perhaps lack the warm heart of the big daddy of the genre, Groundhog Day, but it's well worth the time.

best time loop movie

A lively, light-on-its-feet take on the quintessential time-loop trope, this sleek, sun-soaked romance dramedy at once entertains more vapid and vulgar appetites while navigating our futile search for meaning in a world utterly devoid of it, ultimately sending the message that the only thing that gives life its purpose are new experiences and love, ideally merged into a new lover.

Stucking on a time lup, fun. But not what I was hoping for 😉

What if Groundhog Day was a romantic comedy? The result is a quirky and fun film loaded with charm. Palm Springs does a good job at letting the audience figure things out, rather than explaining everything with exposition. Andy Samberg is hilarious (as per usual) and Cristin Milioti matches his freak completely. Their chemistry is easily one of the strongest parts of the film. I'm a sucker for "bottle episode" type movies, quick witted dialogue and a fast-paced "fun & games" montage, and this movie checked all those boxes. I didn't love the ending and there are a few minor plot points I wasn't a fan of, but it's still a movie I highly enjoyed watching.
