The Paper Reviews
Thoroughly enjoy a high pace film that checks all the boxes. These are classics that need to be remembered and enjoyed.
Loved it - just watched in 2024 a full 30 YEARS after it was released and I was left thinking, Man they don't make em like this anymore, so good....perhaps it was the great acting, story telling and directing. ONE CHANGE I WOULD HAVE MADE: My only issue was at the ending - I didn't think (*spoiler*) Henry's reaction to the headlines was realistic enough, I mean my eyeballs would have been jumping out of their sockets because for all he knew up until that point it was Gotcha....so Ron: it would be a little more realistic if, when Henry enters the hospital room, Martha doesn't hold up the paper with the headline, but instead is just all smiles like she was, and only after he has a warm embrace with her and kisses her, etc...does he see the paper (maybe on the floor) and then Holy Crap! Whaaa....???!! And you see his face reflect for 2 seconds and you know he's thinking like what must have gotten into Alicia for her to turn that around...shrugs...like oh well, that was yesterday... and then gets into the bed with Martha and we see the clock, etc and listening to the news headlines. Ahhhhh. But what a movie.
Great performances all around. I really thought Keaton's performance was the standout. Ron Howards direction was superb. Timothy Treakle
A disappointing ineffective use of an extraordinary cast, except for Clint Howard who was outstanding in the role of featured context character.
This news movie was great. Michael Keaton, Glenn Close, Marisa Tomei, Robert Duvall, Randy Quaid, and the rest of the cast did a great job in this movie. The plot of the movie was dramatic and thrilling. It's about getting the facts right to prove a story is true and not screwing it up. If you haven't seen this movie yet, check it out sometime. It's a must see.
Cast was great, story was mediocre 온라인카지노추천 level.
This is a criminally underrated movie. Entertaining, heartwarming, fantastic writing with an all star cast. Certainly a product of its time but still holds up. As far as ensemble movies go this one does an incredible job balancing tons of characters with a breakneck tempo. Just a blast to watch. They don't make movies like this anymore… and they should.
How crazy are "The Paper" workers?
I watched this on DVD. On the surface theres nothing particularly special about this movie. It's just a fly on the wall story of the goings on at a New York newspaper over a couple of days. However, the movie is cleverly crafted to subtly reel in the unsuspecting viewer making them feel like they are actually in the news office. You soon find yourself living every minute, experiencing the tension and pressure as the paper reacts to breaking news. Highly recommended.
Well acted very entertaining
a dream casting for a comedy that never manages to engage the viewer. Sometimes funny, sometimes touching, never captivating and ultimately very disappointing
Ensemble acting at its best. A whole lot of fun.
Paul Rudd was not in this movie.
Story/Screenplay: (3.5/5) Plenty of interesting characters with lots of smart dialogue, all in a quick tempo storyline that captures the hustle and bustle of a busy newsroom. Duration/Tempo: (3.5/5) At 1 hour and 52 minutes, it's an average length movie that felt about the same. Nice pacing to keep the film light and fun throughout. Cast & Crew: (3.5/5) Stellar cast. Michael Keaton, Robert Duvall, and Glenn Close were excellent, as was Randy Quaid. Summary: (3.5/5) The story and cast were good, and the film didn't feel long. A thumbs up.
It's nostalgic, entertaining and outdated. The Paper is pretty much what you would expect from Ron Howard on an ordinary day and, for Howard, it's a pretty ordinary effort in spite of its raw tonnage in star power.
Better journalism movie than I expected because of the fast paced direction by Ron Howard and the memorable characters. Michael Keaton has a story he wants printed in the next issue of the newspaper and he's willing to do whatever it takes to get it. The movie shows that working as a journalist is incredibly strenuous and you never stop working until the day is finished.
Still like it so much after all these years. Brilliant use of 'time' as the great antagonist. Moves at cracking pace yet allows time for each character to express themselves. Having spent time early career making films for a current affairs program it makes me feel that excitement all over again. Terrific ensemble cast with a brilliant resolution of the main and sub-plots. So many great lines. A big cheer for Ron and cast.
Before there was Michael Keaton in "Spotlight", there was Michael Keaton in "The Paper". Whereas the former is a grave drama, the latter is something of a light-hearted inside look at the news landscape. The performances are brilliant, and Ron Howard's direction works well for the most part. The Paper is a good film just to see a frenetic newsroom drama pre-Spotlight and The Post.
This is not a perfect movie, but after 25 years in newsrooms I do think it's the most true-to-life journalism movie out there. Really? Really. Yes, the plot threads (while plausible on their) all coming together in these 24 hours is unlikely. But the newsroom banter, detritus, emotion, finances and feel is all absolutely spot on.
Even if this was coming in as 100% Fresh it would still be vastly underrated. By far and away the best fully fictional film about jornalism, it is a master class on jornalistic integrity, the power and moral compass of good editors and publishers, the relationship reporters should strive to have with public officials, commitment to the truth, sense of porpose and public service from a media stand point. Beautiful, masterful acting from all involved, great screenplay and a wonderful sense of timing. It depicts wonderfully the poetry and futility of a reporter`s job when it is well done. No matter how good you were yesterday, no matter how good you were today, tomorrow you have to come in and be the best all over again. Jornalism speaks to a certain kind of person, carreerwise. So it is no surprise that it doesn`t speak to everyone in audiences either. But that does not change the fact that this movie is a gem.
